CLUB NEWS ROTARY DISTRICT 7690 APRIL 2016 DISTRICT GOVERNOR S NEWSLETTER Larry W. Lassiter District Governor David Liddiatt RI President s Rep Be a Gift to the World Larry Lassiter, DG PO Box 785, Troy, NC April is Maternal and Child Health Month in our Rotary calendar. This is one of the areas of focus for Rotary International. We as members improve access to essential medical services for mothers and their children. These efforts are aimed at reducing the number of children under age five who die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation a figure that is currently estimated at 7 million. According to another estimate, more than 80 percent of maternal deaths can be prevented with access to reproductive health services and trained health care workers. We provide education, immunizations, birthing kits, and mobile health clinics to support these causes. Women are taught how to prevent mother-toinfant HIV transmission, how to breastfeed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease. As stated above, at least 7 million children under the age of five die due to poor health care, malnutrition, and inadequate sanitation. The projects that we do ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of these health care training programs. We are making a difference! April is District Conference time! Deloris and I are excited about having each of you join us at the magnificent Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia the 22nd thru the 2th. This will be a lot of fun as we come together to celebrate our Rotary accomplishments for the year ROTARY DISTRICT 7690 WELCOMES RI PRESIDENT S REP DAVID LIDDIATT 2016 ROTARY CONFERENCE David joined Rotary in 1968 as a founding member of the Rotary Club of Clifton in Bristol. 2 CLUB NEWS CLUB NEWS Danny Morrison, the President of the Carolina Panthers, was recently the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Greensboro lunch meeting. Morrison mentioned that while the team was disappointed to lose their biggest game of the year the Super Bowl - they began working on their new season the day following that game. Morrison is very optimistic that the team will have another outstanding year since it has an excellent core group of players under contract. He also talked about Panthers owner Jerry Richardson s priorities to run the team the right way both on the field and in business. Pictures show Morrison being given a UNCG Spartan shirt complete with UNCG s version of the dab by club member and friend Kim Record, Athletic Director of UNCG; Morrison speaking to the club, and Morrison receiving acknowledgement of the honorarium the Greensboro Club is donating in Morrison s honor to Ready for School, Ready for Life, a Greensboro program focused on improving preschool preparation for school, to thank him for speaking to the club. Check out the link to the media interview Danny Morrison did prior to speaking to the club: Note what excellent exposure Rotary and the RI logo for this year received in the interview which was done by Fox 8 News! (continued from page 1 ) David was elected to the Board of R.I. for the two year period 2009/2011. During this time he served as an advisor to the Executive and as Chair of the Administration Committee. He is currently a member of the R.I. Fellowship Committee. In earlier days, playing rugby and then squash provided opportunities for physical exercise. These activities have long since been replaced by gardening and, so far, unsuccessful attempts at golf. He is married to Jill who was a magistrate on the Bristol City bench for 30 years. They have two daughters both married and as a result five grandchildren who are always most ready and able to fill in any other spare moments which could possibly arise. 2 The Piedmont Rotarian

CLUB NEWS CLUB NEWS High Point Area Rotarians Work to Feed Thousands By Megan Ward WHO: High Point Rotary Club.Furnitureland Rotary Club..Archdale/Trinity Rotary Club WHAT: Meals of Hope food packing event RAISED: $11,500 PACKED: 6,000 vitamin-enriched macaroni and cheese meals (each meal feeds a family of 6) FOR: Five area food pantries HIGH POINT Wearing hairnets and clear plastic gloves, about 120 High Point-area Rotarians and their family and friends worked for two solid hours on Feb.6. In a church on Main Street, in assembly line fashion, they measured the vitamin-enriched mac and cheese, poured it into bags, weighed and sealed them. Again and again and again and again. The result? Each of the 6,000 meals they packed will feed a family of six. All of those meals went to local food pantries. The High Point-Greensboro area ranks first in the nation for food hardship, according to a Gallup poll released by the Food Research and Action Center. High Point area Rotarians took note of this ranking and have been working to change it. They have held fundraisers and silent auctions, sold cookbooks and made donations to area organizations that alleviate hunger in High Point. And on that Saturday morning, High Point Rotarians used the $11,500 raised and did something. They packed meals that will feed thousands in High Point. Their goal was to pack 0,000 meals. High Point Rotarian Mary Sizemore, who organized the bulk of the effort and worked with the Rotary clubs to get volunteers, said three additional work stations were set up because more volunteers showed up than expected. Bolstered by the extra help, fellowship and rock music blaring in First Presbyterian Church, the volunteers surpassed their goal and packed 6,000 bags. "Many of us write checks and bring canned food to food drives, and that is all good, Sizemore said. But I think what made the food packing event so special is that the volunteers knew that they were actually creating a meal that someone in High Point would enjoy this somehow made it more personal and meaningful. Seeing over 100 people from all over our community come together for this purpose shows how committed High Point is to solving this terrible problem." High Point Rotary built the food packing as a Family of Rotary event. Children as young as 5 helped in the packing, right along with their grandparents. Area 6 incoming Assistant Governor Todd Shoemaker's daughter, Olivia, decided Instead of having a party, she would celebrate her 12th birthday at the event. This is more local than most meal-packing events. It s going to help a lot of people, she said. Boxes filled with packed meal bags headed later that day to five area food pantries, including Burns Hill, Christ United Methodist Church, New Beginnings, The Gathering and COAT (Community Outreach Archdale- Trinity). Meals of Hope food packing events have provided 31,323,71 meals to date. To find out more about hosting a meal packing event with your Rotary club, visit 3 The Piedmont Rotarian

th Annual Meals of Hope My sincerest thanks for your support of our very successful th annual Meals of Hope packing event on Saturday. We were so pleased to welcome over 220 volunteers that included, 10 Rotary Clubs, 13 Interact and Rotaract Clubs, 1 Boy Scout troop and 1 private school! We were able to pack 95,000 of the 100,000 meals projected before we ran out of time but will return with Rotarians to complete the task the second week of April to ensure that all our supplies are utilized for the hungry in our area through local foodbanks and the Out of the Garden Project network. Our partnership with Kristy and Don Milholin and their staff at Out of the Garden creates a terrific team for service and we are appreciative of their continuing cooperation! Please know that the District Grant and Club funds provided have been well administered and certainly will make a difference for those in need in our community! My best in Rotary service, Cindi Hewitt Summit Rotary, Meals of Hope Chair CLUB NEWS CLUB NEWS Rotary Club of Winston-Salem Celebrates 100 Years The Rotary Club of Winston-Salem established February 1st, 1916 celebrated its 100th anniversary at a gala on March 11. 6 CLUB NEWS CLUB NEWS Hand-In-Hand: Changing the Lives of Children for Over 20 Years On December 8, 2015, members of the Rotary Club of Clemmons carried on a 20-year tradition of bringing smiles to the faces of 290 deserving children living in East Winston-Salem. The first Hand-in-Hand event was held in 1995 and involved members of the Rotary Club of Clemmons taking a few children from public housing areas to the Tanglewood Festival of Lights, followed by a meal at McDonalds. This small act of caring has since grown each year into a project that requires several community partners, a dedicated project committee, and an entire club of volunteers. This year, 290 children benefitted from community and club partnerships with GIDE, a not-for-profit agency providing educational services to the underserved children of East Winston- Salem, Costco, Jerry Long YMCA, Agape Faith Church, Mountain Fried chicken, and members of the Rotary Club of Clemmons. In months prior to the event, club members collect donations for toys, clothing, books, candy, and Christmas goody bags for each child. The night before the event is spend stuffing goody bags and preparing Agape Faith Church for feeding and entertaining 290 children. On the big day, children who are selected based on merit and need by GIDE, are picked up at their homes by YMCA buses and drivers, transported to Agape Faith Church for diner, games, prizes, and goodies. Then the children load the buses for a trip through the Tangelwood Festival of Lights. The trip back home is a fun mix of sleepy, excited children, and exhausted chaperones! Gary and Rebecca Howorka, co-chairmen of this year s project, commented, There is no greater gift than to teach children about God s love. Hopefully a little seed of that truth is planted by this event each year. The project is a huge success each year due to the support from sponsors, community volunteers, and club members dedicated to changing the lives of children in need. To honor the long history of the impact of this project, Winston-Salem Mayor, Allen Joines, proclaimed December 8, 2015, as Hand-in-Hand 6 The Piedmont Rotarian

ROTARY FOUNDATION History of OUR Rotary Foundation At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment for the purpose of doing good in the world. In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty Growth of the Foundation In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. Daddy Allen, later grew into Easter Seals. When Rotary founder Paul Harris died in 197, contributions began pouring in to Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation. Evolution of Foundation programs 197: The Foundation established its first program, Fellowships for Advance Study, later known as Ambassadorial Scholarships : Three programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants. 1978: Rotary introduced the Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants. The first 3-H Grant funded a project to immunize 6 million Philippine children against polio. 1985: The PolioPlus Campaign was launched to eradicate polio worldwide : The first peace forums were held, leading to Rotary Peace Fellowships. 2013: New district and global grants enable Rotarians around the world to respond to the world s greatest needs. Our Rotary Foundation helps fund our humanitarian activities, from local service projects to global initiatives. Our clubs can apply for grants from the Foundation to invest in projects and provide scholarships. The Foundation also leads the charge on worldwide Rotary campaigns such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Rotarians and friends of Rotary support the Foundation s work through voluntary contributions. Since the first donation of $26.50 almost 100 years ago, the Foundation s endowment is more than $1 billion. 9 The Piedmont Rotarian SAVE-the-DATE: The 100th year celebration of OUR Rotary Foundation will be in Atlanta, June 10 1, If you have never been to a Rotary Convention this is GREAT opportunity!

It s About Membership Mentoring Matters Thirty years ago my Summit Rotary Club, with a $500 member donation, established a scholarship fund that now is proud to report a half a million dollar endowment for 16 yearly $1,500 scholarships for each of the public high schools in Guilford County. But only this year have we transitioned this competitive selection of rising senior recipients into making sure these worthy scholars, of need, many first generation high school graduates, actually make it to college. It s been a rewarding mentoring opportunity for me to help a first generation Latina young woman navigate the often confusing process of college applications, deadlines and fees. We are also teaching life skills to these great students. I must admit, it s been one of the most satisfying endeavors I ve undertaken in my 6 year Rotary experience. Practically speaking, I d venture to say that we all have either been mentored or do mentor throughout our personal lives and business careers. I m sure you can name people in your own life who have made a difference for you. Even if you don t have a formal mentoring experience, like I do, you do have opportunities to support the fellow Rotarians in your club. Lisa Hazlett, of the Crescent Club in Greensboro, shared what her club doesa great mentoring best practice for us all. Greg Brown is our Membership Chair. To aid in retention, our active members list has been divided up amongst our board. It was divided up by the table we sit at and if we have established relationships with the members. As we approach certain milestones for Gold Club status, Greg reminds us all to reach out to our members and ensure that they are all happy and healthy. We see if they need anything, if they seem engaged and are participating. Currently we are +3 for the year. Our goal was +1. I m hoping to implement this support system with my Summit board. You may want to, as well, since mentoring does matter! For mentoring resources go to: mentoring.org and pointsoflight.org. Cindi Hewitt, D7690 Membership Chair cpr5@aol.com, The Piedmont Rotarian

POLIO PLUS UPDATE Thanks to all of our Rotarians in District 7690 for being the #1 district in Zone 33 for individual Rotarian giving through March We are also #1 in per capita giving, #1 in per club giving, and #2 in total giving. If we meet our individual, club, and district goals for giving to PolioPlus we can finish 2015/2016 as the #1 district in Zone 33 in all categories of giving to End Polio Now. Polio is now endemic in just 2 countries and the world is on the verge of seeing only the second human disease ever eradicated, with smallpox being the first. In 201, India was certified polio-free after marking three years without a case of polio. In September 2015, Nigeria Africa s last country to stop the disease was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries. Now just two countries Pakistan and Afghanistan remain endemic. Pakistan accounted for nearly 90% of the world s polio cases in 201. However, the country made noteworthy gains in 2015, reducing its case count by more than 80% since the same time in 201. This is just one example of the worldwide commitment to End Polio Now which has been led by Rotary International since Rotary members around the world have engaged their communities in unique ways to raise awareness for eradicating this devastating disease. One of the greatest assets in the fight to end polio is the determination of Rotary s members and its partners around the globe. And an added benefit of the End Polio Now campaign is the strengthening of health care systems throughout the world, ensuring the continuing legacy of a polio-free world. With over 1.2 million members, Rotary Clubs worldwide have dedicated themselves to ending polio. To date, through advocacy and fundraising efforts, Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion in support of polio immunization activities. PDG Rick Snider, Polio Chairman History continues to be written about the worldwide eradication of polio and that history remains part of Rotary s legacy. Let s continue our commitment in District 7690 during the last quarter of this Rotary year and exceed our individual and club goals to End Polio Now. 12 The Piedmont Rotarian
