2 Rotary Walk For Polio Walk to Eliminate Polio Because You Can! A Rotary Walk to Eradicate Polio is an excellent way for you and your club to increase public awareness about this crippling disease and also raise money towards your club s pledge for Rotary District 7360 Park for Polio 2013 Campaign. Encourage your club members and their families to participate. Perhaps your club may want to issue a challenge to other service organizations (Kiwanis, Lions, etc.) church groups, PTOs, businesses, industries, Interacters, 4-H, Boy Scouts, etc. to join you in walking and collecting pledges for the Rotary Walk to Eradicate Polio. Plan a several mile walk that will include some of the spectacular natural beauty of your area. You may want to announce that ribbons or small trophies will be presented to the top three individuals and top three organizations who raise the most funds. Issue a Certificate of Participation to all those who complete the Walk. Enjoy the fellowship of other Rotarians and service-minded individuals from your community for an hour or two and raise some money our Rotary District 7360 Park for Polio 2013 Campaign.. You may want to sell refreshments and red END POLIO now T-shirts or pins. (IMPORTANT NOTE: As you walk, don t forget to ask participants who are not already Rotarians if they are a member of a service organization. Jot down their name, phone #, and address on the mini-tablet you ll also carry in your fanny pack so you can follow up with the after the event.) Arrange with your club Treasurer or Secretary to prepare a list of the donor names, addresses and, the amounts collected and bring the money and list to DelGrosso s near Altoona on. Charitable donation tax receipts can be provided for donations of $25 or more. The funds will go to the Foundation and are fully deductible. Join in the fun and fellowship of the walk. Provide Certificates of Participation to all participants. Your club members and walkers from other organizations will then collect their pledges, using the Certificate of Participation to demonstrate that the walkers completed the walk. Have the pledge sheets and money turned in to your club Eradicate Polio Walk Committee who will balance the money with the lists and submit the complete list and total monies to. OAKLAND CLUB NEWS The House of Hope Food Pantry Project is complete as of today. Our Club and the Grantsville Club donated 4 new freezers to the House of Hope as well as over $1,000 in frozen meat for needy families. Our Club is about to complete its donations for the year. We have/will have donated over $40,000 to various charities that include The ShelterBox, Etta Project, PolioPlus, as well as many local charities. They are rather happy regarding what they have been able to accomplish this year and hope it continues in years to come. Oakland just completed its annual Christmas Project to needy families and senior citizens. As a result of toy donations from local businesses, churches, and individuals, we loaded Santa's sleigh up for almost 200 families (approximately 350 children). For the 225 senior citizens selected we provided each with $50.00 gift cards to the local Shop N Save Grocery Stores. Added to that, we provided $25.00 gift cards for groceries to single parent families. The Club also completed the annual Dictionary Project. The teachers asked us to tell a little about Rotary and as a result we've received many thank you cards from the third and fourth grade classes. Comments received ranged from simple thank yous to: "Thank you for the US Map; Thanks for the metric measure resource; Thank you for the guide to helps us read; I like examples of the parts of speech; The pronunciation key helps you a lot"; and my favorite Punction rules, sure will help." One in particular thank you letter says it all for what we do in Rotary. It's from the Third Grade Class at Crellin Elementary School. Dear Rotary Club friends, Thank you so much for our dictionaries. We have already used them many times to learn about new words. We love them! Thank you, too, for telling us about what you do to help the world. You have saved many lives from polio. We looked up polio and found out how terrible the disease really is. We are so glad it is almost gone. We are so lucky to have you in our world. Thank you so much for all you do. Sincerely, Your Third Grade Friends at Crellin Elementary School. With accolades like this it is no wonder why Rotarians care so much.

7 SELINSGROVE CLUB HONORS MEMBER At this year s holiday part, the Selinsgrove Rotary Club honored Robert C. Fogle with the Service Above Self Award which is given for distinguished service to the community and the club. Bob has been a Selinsgrove Rotarian for 32 years and during that time has held a number of key positions as well as being in charge of some of the club s most successful fund raising activities. Fogle has been associated with Temple Products of PA in Selinsgrove since He and his wife Abby live in Selinsgrove and have two grown children. Pictured (L to R) is Dorothy Anderson, award chairperson, Fogle and Donna Schuck, President of the Selinsgrove Rotary Club. ROTARY CLUB OF WAYNESBORO SPONSORS FIRST BATTLE OF THE MINDS FUNDRAISER The Rotary Club of Waynesboro sponsored the Battle of the Minds competition fundraiser jointly with Easter Seals of Central Pennsylvania s South Central Region in October The contest at Green Grove Gardens raised $20,000 to be split between the Rotary Club and Easter Seals. Attendees put their heads together and answered 30 multiple choice questions about history, pop culture, sports and entertainment. The room was filled with laughter and excitement when team members answered questions correctly, and collective disappointment when the answer they thought they knew was incorrect. Ticket sales and auction items donated by individuals and businesses including Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens football tickets, a massage package and basket from Harvest Moon Studio, a three-month membership to the Waynesboro YMCA, golf packages at the Waynesboro Country Club and Penn National and a hand-crafted black walnut dulcimer donated by Dr. James Hamilton helped raise money for both organizations to use in local communities. Winning team Manitowoc Mentalists received a trophy to display for the next year and $800 which the team donated back to the event. For our first time, we are very pleased with how well it went off. For 200 people to show up and support us was very great, said Chairman Dr. Robert Zimmerman, who chaired the event. The Rotary Club of Waynesboro plans to hold the battle every year, splitting the money with a different charity each time. SHEPHERDSTOWN ROTARY EVENT RAISED $22,570 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES The Shepherdstown Rotary Club's annual Christmas Charity Ball, which was held last December 7 at the Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department Hall, raised a total of $22,570 for 16 local nonprofit organizations. The event is entitled "Our Ball, Your Charity." Each year, individual Rotarians help underwrite it by sponsoring tables and contributing funds toward the costs of food, beverages, music and decorations. Sponsoring organizations cover the rest of those costs. All of the proceeds from the sale of tickets to each table are then donated to charities selected by the table's host. Each table is also given the opportunity to participate in a silent auction, and all the auction proceeds go to the designated charities as well. The nonprofit organizations that benefited from the December 7 event were as follows: American Diabetes Association, American Red Cross, Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County, CASA of the Eastern Panhandle, Friends of Music, Good Shepherd Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Panhandle, Historic Shepherdstown, Jennifer Barlow Foundation, Potomac Valley Audubon Society, Shepherdstown Area Independent Living (SAIL), Shepherdstown Day Care, Shepherdstown Middle School Jazz Band, Shepherdstown Public Library, Shepherdstown Rotary Foundation, and the Shepherdstown Welcome Sign Project. The lead sponsor of the event was The Peterson Group at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Other sponsors were the Bavarian Inn, the Contemporary American Theater Festival, and Everything Linen. Students at Shepherdstown Elementary School provided decorations for the event.

8 HUGHESVILLE CLUB DELIVERS DICTIONARIES Members of the Hughesville Rotary Club brought dictionaries to the third graders throughout the East Lycoming School District. Rotarians Geneva Peck, Karlda Thomas, Jim Toohey and Sherry Cowburn visited classrooms and distributed new dictionaries to all of the current third grade students. One Rotarian noted, "This is an annual event at the Hughesville schools and the students always seem interested and enthusiastic." "Look at all of the words," beamed one of the students, as she scanned through her new book. Hughesville Rotarians, Sherry Cowburn, Geneva Peck and Karlda Thomas distributed dictionaries to all third graders throughout the East Lycoming School District. Geneva Peck spent time with the students at each school explaining the value and contents of the book and also describing the Rotary's work within the community. At Ashkar Elementary school one student, after hearing about the Rotary pavilion in town, proudly stated, "My brother helped to build that. He is an L.C.C. carpenter." (carpentry student at the Lycoming Career and Technology Center). Another student stated, "My Brother Jimmy is an Interacter," referring to the Hughesville Interact. The Rotarians outlined the future events in Hughesville for the students including the annual tree lighting and a visit from Santa Claus. Mrs. Peck encouraged all of the students to get involved in their education and to use their new resource well. She also stressed that each of them could be Rotarians and leaders in their community when they grow up. HAGERSTOWN-SUNRISE DISTRIBUTES FUNDS For the Rotary Club of Hagerstown-Sunrise, sharing the auction proceeds with community non-profits is a highlight of each year. 11 HAGERSTOWN ROTARY CLUB VISITS THE SALVATION ARMY'S NEW MULTI-USE FACILITY Eighty Rotarians from the Hagerstown Rotary Club manned the kettles and rang the bells for the Salvation Army on Friday, December 21, 2012 at the Valley Mall in Hagerstown, Md. All the volunteers had a fabulous time and by the end of the day, the kettles were stuffed to capacity, making it difficult to get any more money in them! The Club raised over $3400 that day, which is the second most of any participating organization. On January 16, 2013, the club had a unique opportunity to see the fruit of their volunteer efforts. Hagerstown Rotary Clubs meeting was offsite at the Salvation Army's new gymnasium/multi-use facility. Mr. Harry Barger showcased the beautiful new building which opened in October of this past year. The land where the building is located used to be a playground, and when winter or foul weather came the playground wasn't able to be used by the area's children. With the new 1.8MM facility in place, over 80 children use the facility every day. The facility is also used to serve many other community functions - even community meetings when the need arises. Mr. Barger thanked the group for all of their ongoing support and direct fundraising efforts with the project. Our local Salvation Army chapter was started in 1901 and has a long and rich history.
