I pplied for the N BOD scholrship becuse I wnt to ttend the N nnul conference; s student, it would be difficult for me to fford. dditionlly, I m excited for the connections tht I will build with other student scholrs nd other psychitric nurse professionls from round the country. Working with methmphetmine-dependent individuls exposed me to the devstting effects of drug ddiction. Estblishing rpport ws criticl when I interviewed clients bout mood, drug crvings, nd drug use history. I quickly lerned how to be friendly nd pprochble while mintining professionl boundries. Building reltionships with my ptients nd providing comfortble nd sfe environment for them to spek openly ffirmed my decision to pursue mentl helth. Wht re your creer gols fter grdution? I m currently in the MSN sych/mentl Helth Nurse rctitioner (MHN) progrm t UCSF (University of Cliforni, Sn Frncisco) nd expecting to grdute in Spring I m tremendously enjoying my grdute nursing eduction t UCSF nd feel very fortunte to be in one of the ntion s best MHN progrms! Why did you pply for the N BOD scholrship? I ws first introduced to N during the first yer of my MSN progrm when my professors shred some of the mrvelous NEW! N Stte Legisltive Trcking Tool things bout this professionl orgniztion. This pst spring, our MHN specilty director Beth hoenix sent n emil to my cohort bout the N BOD scholrship. She highly encourged everyone to pply. nd I did! It is relly tremendous honor nd ccomplishment to be one of the recipients of N BOD scholrship. I m looking forwrd to N s networking, ledership, nd mentoring progrms nd ctivities. Wht peked your interest in psychitric nursing? My interest in psychitric nursing commenced when I ws in the process of obtining my certifiction s Licensed sychitric Technicin. I ctully worked s sych Tech in n inptient psychitric stte hospitl (for little over two yers) while obtining my degree in nursing. This creer strting point provided me strong creer foundtion nd dediction to the field of mentl helth I hve to sy tht working s psychitric nurse hs been one of the most chllenging, eye-opening, fulfilling, nd rewrding experiences of my life. I believe tht becoming MH Nurse rctitioner will llow me to broden my roles s mentl helth clinicin, nd lso be of service to my ptients to greter extent. Wht re your creer gols fter grdution? I hve been prcticing MHN for the pst 14 yers. rior to becoming MHN, I worked s n RN in oncology nd bone mrrow trnsplnt. I begn my MHN prctice in New York City, working in prtil hospitls nd t ROMES (uerto Ricn Orgniztion to Motivte, Enlighten, nd Serve ddicts). I moved to Cliforni in 2006 nd I currently work t The Villge in Long Bech. It is community mentl helth center (CMHC) ffilited with Mentl Helth meric Los ngeles (MHL). The Villge is known for its strong commitment for providing over 20 yers of recoveryoriented psychosocil rehbilittive cre to persons with serious mentl illness. I live nerby in Torrnce nd hve two little girls, ges 3 nd 6. Wht nd where re you currently studying? When re you expecting to grdute? I just recently completed my Doctor of Nursing rctice (DN) degree t the CSU DN Southern Cliforni Consortium. I believe everyone hs specil gift something tht they enjoy nd excel in, nd feels like right fit to them. For me, it is working s MHN with persons with serious mentl illness. with severe mentl illness (SMI). Why did you pply for the N BOD scholrship? I pplied for the N BOD t the encourgement of my doctorl chir. She is long-time member of N nd understnds my desire to influence chnge in psychitric nursing cre to further include integrted cre. I m very grteful for the opportunity to ttend the nnul conference gin this yer nd look forwrd to getting to know nd building reltionship with the members nd the Bord of Directors. I m hopeful tht my incresed connection with N through the BOD scholrship will llow me to hve the opportunity to become more involved in the N-C Chpter nd, in the future, with N Ntionl. Wht peked your interest in psychitric nursing? My mother is n RN prcticing in psychitry. Growing up, I ws continully fscinted with the stories she told nd people she spoke bout. We spent time serving people in food bnks nd soup kitchens when I ws young. It ws comfortble environment for me nd I ws surprised to lern tht not ll people were s interested in or comfortble with persons with mentl illness. fter erning degree in psychology, I worked s n intensive cse mnger in n outptient mentl helth center. Two things becme cler to me. First: I ws sdly stonished t the lck of respect tht is, t times, shown to persons with SMI. Second: philosophiclly, the whole person/holistic cre tht nursing provides is necessity when working with people with mentl illness. So, I went bck to school to ern BSN so I could be psychitric nurse. I hve been drwn to helping reduce stigm for this popultion, educting the public bout mentl illness, nd providing respectful, qulity, comprehensive, nd person-centered cre for people with serious mentl illness. Severl months go, N members completed survey sking for input to help inform the Bord of Directors s they reviewed nd revised N s strtegic pln. The Bord met nd updted the pln erlier this yer, using these survey responses s guidnce. This new pln will direct the bord s decision-mking, lloction of resources, nd involvement in inititives over the next five yers. The pln ws finlized nd pproved nd is now up on the website here: pges/index.cfm?pgeid= s stted on the N website, The N Strtegic ln guides the Bord of Directors in governnce of the ssocition. It focuses their strtegic decision-mking nd ongoing opertionl work. It is working document, informed by feedbck from councils, chpters, nd the membership, tht undergoes revision nd renewl every three yers to ensure its relevnce. The VOICE wrds give honor to consumer/peer leders s well s television nd film professionls who seek to educte the public bout mentl helth wreness through their work. I ws honored to hve met nd st next to fellow N member, Dr. MrySue Heilemnn, who conducts reserch t UCL on Ltin women nd mentl helth s well s reserches nd dvoctes for the medi portryl of nurses. This yer s wrds ceremony ws led by Chndr Wilson from Grey s ntomy, nd the theme ws SUICIDE wreness nd prevention. Throughout the evening, myths, fcts, nd sttistics bout suicide were presented. We herd tht died by suicide is the more cceptble wy to describe suicide, rther thn committed or completed suicide. We witnessed consumer Dese Re L. Stge spek of the shme of living through suicide. She presented the powerful work tht cn be done to find heling nd cceptnce through support, dvoccy, nd eduction in creting, Live Through This, living exhibit of suicide survivors nd their stories. wrds were given to Hollywood films nd TV shows, both documentry nd fiction. Vets, we don t need sving. We need understnding. The words of Tyler Grey nd Jyson Floyd, both Veterns of the US Militry, were present t the wrds ceremony nd ccepted the wrd for Tht Which I Love Destroys Me, film depicting their reintegrtion over 3 yers into civilin life. We herd tht Vetern dies every 22 minutes by suicide in the US; this documentry hopes to support the process of reintegrtion nd reduce these numbers. There were nerly 20 SMHS Voice wrdees, ech individully unique nd deserving. The common denomintors mongst ll were eduction nd dvoccy for those living or touched by mentl illness. This ceremony celebrted the work nd cretivity of those who RE shring their messge, in hopes of mking n impct on the right person t the right time. 6

Mrlene hs devoted her creer to improving psychitric nursing cre t the bedside, educting medicl nurses on prctice chnges for cring for psychitric ptients outside the behviorl helth unit, nd working to develop strtegies to reduce both workplce violence nd seclusion nd restrint use. Her efforts hve contributed to reduction in hospitl 1:1 sitter hours/sfety wtches, nd improvement in nursing stisfction scores. Mrlene hs presented on the topic of unit sfety nd seclusion nd restrint reduction throughout the United Sttes nd hs represented the mericn sychitric Nurses ssocition (N) t the Europen Congress on Violence in sychitry in msterdm, the Netherlnds in She hs been interviewed nd hs published extensively on this topic. Mrlene becme chmpion for the reduction of seclusion nd restrint use long before there ws consensus understnding of its importnce. Her stnce did not mke her populr mong stff nurses or dministrtion. The notion tht one could tke cre of violent psychotic ptient without restrining them ws unherd of, nd mny predicted n escltion of ptient nd stff injuries. Mrlene hs devoted her creer to improving psychitric nursing cre t the bedside, educting medicl nurses on prctice chnges for cring for psychitric ptients outside the behviorl helth unit, nd working to develop strtegies to reduce both workplce violence nd seclusion nd restrint use. Mrlene s bility to synthesize nd shre compelling restrint reduction reserch, s well s her willingness to work side-by-side with nurses, demonstrted tht both ptients nd nurses re sfer in n environment where nurses re proctively engged with ptients. In 2009, N wrded Mrlene s sychitric Nurse of the Yer. Mrlene hs worked on both the ntionl nd stte bords of N. Mrlene hs tken led in the development nd implementtion of sfe prctice stndrds. She hs the uncnny bility to bring nurses from diverse geogrphic, eductionl, nd prctice bckgrounds together. Mrlene hs lso been mentor nd preceptor for mny nursing professionls throughout her creer. In 2010, Mrlene nd her former preceptee designed new grd orienttion progrm in the specilty re of psychitric nursing. This progrm incorported psychitric mentl helth nursing scope nd stndrds of prctice. Mrlene provides n dult lerning environment tht is supportive yet encourges her preceptees to grow personlly, professionlly, nd contribute to society. She hs worked tirelessly to reduce the stigm ssocited with mentl illness. We re very proud of Mrlene nd feel very fortunte to cll her collegue, dvocte, nd friend.
