Five schools were dded to the ACSpproved list by CPT; three were plced on probtion; one ws removed from probtion; nd one ws removed from the pproved list. Currently, students my receive degrees in chemistry with options in biochemistry, chemicl physics, chemistry eduction, mterils, or polymers. By the end of, the committee hd pproved progrms with biochemistry option; one with chemicl physics option; three in chemistry eduction; nd seven with polymers option. No pplictions for pprovl of mterils options were reviewed in. The committee completed revision of "ACS Guidelines & Evlution Procedures for Undergrdute Professionl Eduction in Chemistry" to incorporte requirements for certifiction of students with degree in chemistry with n emphsis in biochemistry, chemicl physics, chemistry eduction, mterils, or polymers. The guidelines include revised sttement on librry requirements for ACS pprovl. The committee lso updted the list of recommended journls for ACS-pproved progrms. Both the guidelines booklet nd the journls list my be obtined from Cthy A. Nelson, Mnger, Office of Professionl Trining, ACS, th St., N.W., Wshington, D.C.. From necdotl informtion, the committee lerned tht severl schools re experiencing turnround in enrollments in freshmn nd sophomore chemistry courses. The committee completed survey of ACS-pproved schools to determine if this trend is widespred, nd if so, the size of the increses. The committee, in consulttion with severl individuls ctive in environmentl chemistry eduction, drfted sttement of requirements for proposed ACS-pproved option in environmentl chemistry. This committee gthers grdution dt nnully from chemistry deprtments with undergrdute progrms it hs pproved. These deprtments ccount for bout % of ll new bchelor's degree chemists nd for essentilly ll dvnced chemistry degrees. Indin regined the top spot s the lrgest producer of bchelor-level chemists. It held this position every yer for the previous seven yers, with the exception of -, when it dropped behind the University of Illinois, Urbn- Chmpign. Illinois is rnked second this yer, followed by the University of Cliforni, Los Angeles, which continues to hng on to the third spot. Johns Hopkins ws the lrgest producer of mster's chemistry grdutes in -, rising from rd plce in -. The University of Wshington pssed Cornell University for second plce. Cornell, third in -, hd held the top spot for the previous two yers. Lst yer ws the eighth yer in row tht UC Berkeley heded the list of producers.
