2 The Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course September 14 15, 2010 (Rm 2005) October 12 13, 2010 (Rm 2702) 30 Hope Drive, Hershey, Pennsylvania Purpose/Course Information The Oncology Nursing Society s (ONS) Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course provides a comprehensive review of the knowledge needed to administer cytotoxic and biotherapeutic agents. This is NOT a competency or certification course. The individual employer or institution should determine clinical competency. Audience This course has been designed for licensed registered nurses who have been employed as such for a minimum of six months and are interested in learning the basic of cancer chemotherapy and its administration. Objectives Upon completion, participants should be able to: Identify various therapeutic modalities used to treat cancer with emphasis on chemotherapy and biotherapy Describe the investigational process all drugs undergo to gain approval for use Review ethical and legal issues related to cancer therapy Identify factors affecting response to cancer therapy Identify selected commonly used agents, their mechanisms of action, and any unique administration issues Discuss safety precautions necessary when handling cytotoxic agents Review chemotherapy dose calculations and practice examples Identify nursing procedures and interventions for administering cytotoxic and biologic agents Discuss two immediate complications of cancer therapy, extravasation and hypersensitivity, and the nursing measures required to prevent and/or reduce these complications Identify selected systematic side effects of cytotoxic and biotherapeutic agents and the nursing interventions required to manage these side effects Review specific patient and family education that may prevent and/or reduce the impact of systemic side effects Credit ONS will award 13.5 contact hours to registered nurses who complete the evaluation and attend this program in its entirety. ONS is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. 5 Oncology Nursing Core Curriculum Review September 21 22, Hope Drive, Room 2702 A/B, Hershey, Pennsylvania Purpose This program is designed to serve as preparation for the Oncology Nursing Certification exam. It also provides a comprehensive review of oncology for nurses working in cancer care. Audience Registered nurses working in cancer care and those interested in pursuing oncology nursing certification may benefit from attending this program. Objectives Upon completion, participants should be able to: Describe carcinogenesis, growth characteristics of tumor cells, and tumor nomenclature Identify the cancer sites of highest incidence by sex and mortality Describe cancer treatment modalities (chemotherapy, biotherapy, radiation therapy, and stem cell transplant) and nursing care related to treatment side effects Describe safe handling of chemotherapy and the management of extravasation List three helpful hints in studying for a standardized test Identify characteristics of major malignancies (prostate, breast, colorectal, GI malignancies, melanoma, lung) Describe the nursing care of patients with an oncologic emergency Identify nursing interventions related to the physical and psychosocial needs of the cancer patient Describe the etiology and management of cancer pain Describe the role of the oncology nurse generalist in relation to ethical and legal issues, standards of practice, evidence-based practice, and cancer survivorship Credit 14 contact hours awarded. 8 GENERAL INFORMATION Fees The fees include instruction, handouts, and breaks, as well as lunch where indicated below. ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course, September 14 15, 2010, or October 12 13, 2010 $230 Lunch is not included either day. The fee also includes a copy of the 2009 Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Guidelines and Recommendations for Practice, 3rd Ed. book. You should bring the following for note taking: 1. Multicolored highlighters 2. Page tabs 3. A calculator for testing Oncology Nursing Core Curriculum Review, September 21 22, 2010 $250 Lunch is not included. Registration For the Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course, registration is required no later than three weeks prior to the course, so that course materials can be ordered. Register online, by fax, or by mail for all three courses. Registrations will be confirmed by upon receipt of payment, authorization to bill, or a credit card guarantee. If you do not receive a confirmation from Penn State within two weeks, phone to confirm your registration. Walk-ins cannot be accepted. Cancellation Policy Cancellations received after one week prior to the program will be assessed a $25 processing fee. No refunds will be made for cancellations received later than two working days prior to the program. Substitutes are accepted at any time. The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course or activity because of insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If a program is canceled or postponed, the University will refund registration fees but cannot be held responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines or travel agencies. Preregistered participants will be notified if a program is filled or canceled. Accommodations Accommodations are the responsibility of the participant.
