3 GOAL This annual activity will focus on the neurosciences, including stroke and other disorders of the brain and spine. Join your colleagues and keep current on the latest evidence-based practice guidelines. The goal of this conference is to assist health care providers to implement practice change, to incorporate emerging technologies, and to adapt to changing practice environments. Didactic lectures and case presentations will be supplemented with opportunities for questions and answers after each presentation. The environment for this conference will also serve to facilitate multidisciplinary networking and collaboration among practitioners across the region. Electronic handouts will be made available to conference attendees. TARGET AUDIENCE Primary care physicians, internists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other allied health care professionals will benefit from attendance at this activity. OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to: Review the neurologic exam for stroke patients Review recent endovascular trial results and impact on treatment in stroke and cerebrovascular disease Discuss indications and impact of timing and selection on endovascular intervention Discuss the neuropsychological impact of a nondominant hemisphere stroke Discuss cognitive strategies for residual deficits Discuss behavioral interventions for mood and personality changes Review common medical complications in stroke and the impact on recovery Discuss relevant treatment strategies used to prevent medical complications from stroke Identify signs of suicidal ideation and attempt in stroke patients with communication issues Review trends in stroke in the young and in the female population Discuss criteria for determining brain death Describe considerations in determining when to consult palliative care Discuss recent advances in treatment and management of Parkinson s Disease Review diagnostic criteria and medical management of ALS Summarize neuropsychological interventions for hyper and hyposexuality in neurologic disorders Describe the impact of libido changes on relationships YOU ASKED, WE LISTENED! You wanted to hear more about the patient perspective from stroke survivors. This year, please welcome Teri Ackerson, RN. Ms. Ackerson has worked in ICU and NICU units and served as palliative care coordinator, and stroke care coordinator at Centerpoint Medical Center, and stroke/ STEMI program manager at Liberty Hospital. She has recently returned to intensive care at St. Luke s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. A year ago last Memorial Day, Teri Ackerson finished a 6-mile run in preparation for her next marathon. She went home for a shower, and then visited a Starbucks for a latte with her teenage son. Upon driving away, the grip she had on her coffee cup loosened, and her left arm suddenly went numb. She felt the left side of her face droop and she couldn t speak. Teri was having a stroke. In fact, Teri Ackerson knew from her experience as a nurse and stroke coordinator what was happening. Join us as Teri relates her experience as a health care professional who experienced stroke firsthand. Teri will be discussing trends in stroke in the young and in the female population, as well as revealing the impact with those who suffer communication issues as a result of stroke.
