Gaffney Diagnostic Referral Service Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, PA This program will provide the history of and major issues of a particularly challenging form of child abuse, Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Definition, epidemiology, family characteristics, modes of presentation, medical aspects, social characteristics of the perpetrator and nuclear family will be discussed. The approach to treatment and selected legal aspects will also be presented. At the conclusion of this program participants should be able to: 1. Define Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSP) and differentiate it from other forms of child abuse; 2. Examine the characteristics of the perpetrator and the victim, and learn of the role of physicians in this disorder; 3. Discuss how to approach the family suspected of MSP and the results of long-term follow up of children victimized by MSP others interested in behavioral health services who work with children. The program will review the indications, adverse drug reactions, important drug interactions, dosing and administration of these agents. In addition, counseling for children/adolescents with mental illness and their families regarding medications will be discussed. At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to: 1. Identify the various classes of psychopharmacologic agents presently being used 2. Monitor children/adolescents with mental illness for the desired therapeutic outcome and for the potential occurrence of adverse effects from the drugs 3. Although behavioral approaches have proven effective in producing weight loss in the general adult population, chronically mentally ill patients have been excluded from controlled weight management treatment trials. In this presentation, a three-month behavioral weight control program for patients taking anti-psychotic medications will be discussed and findings reported. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: 1. Discuss the causes and consequences of obesity. 2. Describe the basics of behavioral treatment of obesity. 3. Identify special considerations for obese patients who are chronically mentally ill. 4.
