It goes through some common misperceptions of the strategic planning process, and reviews why PCNs will fail to create value for patients, the government and their staff, if the board does not engage in developing and monitoring the strategic goals of the PCN. 9:00 A.M. In this session, Dr. Luelo from the South Calgary PCN will share their approach to supporting member practices as well as considerations for other PCNs who are planning or revisiting their plan to support member practices. Participants will leave with several ideas to strengthen their planning process in supporting practices with PMH implementation.

Death by Consensus: Institutions and Innovation Jim Dewald, PhD, Dean, Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary Entrepreneurial or innovative organizations are very distinct. They are different, and typically one does not see the highest levels of innovation within large public institutions, such as hospitals and health care regions. Many large institutions are governed by consensus, which, if not done properly, can result in stalling, maybe even killing the innovative spirit of the organization. However, there are large organizations that succeed by being entrepreneurial/innovative, and this session will explore some of the key characteristics of successful entrepreneurial/innovative firms, and how those principles could be adopted in a healthcare setting. 3:15 P.M.
