Profile Aneurin Bevan University Health Board was set up on the 1st October 2009 and replaces the former Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust and Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen Local Health Boards. The Health Board is responsible for the delivery of health care services to more then 600,000 people living in the Gwent area. We are also responsible in partnership for improving the health and well being of local people. We deliver our services to the populations of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. In addition services are provided to residents in South Powys. The catchment area of the Health Board is bounded by the Brecon Beacons to the North, the Rhymney Valley to the West and the Wye Valley to the East, Newport is the main town in the South. We have three major acute hospitals: Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, Caerphilly In addition there are eighteen community hospitals in the area. There is also a range of specialist health centres, local clinics and primary care facilities providing medical, dental, pharmacy and optometric services along with facilities providing mental health and learning disability services. More than one thousand hospital and general practitioner doctors and six thousand nurses, allied health professionals and community based staff deliver services to our local communities. FP1 doctors are based in the Royal Gwent or Nevill Hall hospitals. FP2 doctors are based at all three sites. More information on the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is available on the Internet at The Chief Executive of the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is Mrs Judith Paget. The Chairman of the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is David Jenkins OBE. 2
Working as a Foundation Doctor in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, the range of clinical cases you will be exposed to as a foundation trainee will facilitate the professional and educational development that is required of you during your first two years as a doctor. The Health Board serves a large population with considerable health needs. It is an ideal opportunity for you to learn from a broad range of cases in a supportive environment. Your point of contact if there are any difficulties or questions regarding your Foundation training is Caroline Newman or Sarah Davies, Foundation Programme Administrators for the health board. Caroline and Sarah are based in The Friars Education Centre at the Royal Gwent and can be contacted on (Caroline) or (Sarah). Caroline is responsible for Eportfolio, and any queries regarding this should be directed to her, whilst Sarah deals with the teaching programme for Foundation, You will be contacted by both on a regular basis with information about your training. When Caroline or Sarah are not available any of the other members of the Postgraduate team will be more than happy to assist. The Foundation Programme Directors are: Dr Francis Subash (francis.subash@wales.nhs.uk) (Consultant Anaesthetist, Royal Gwent Hospital) Dr Stuart Linton (stuart.linton@wales.nhs.uk) (Consultant in Rheumatology, Nevill Hall Hospital) They are both more than happy to hear from you should you wish to speak to them about any aspect of your training. Each Foundation Doctor will also be allocated an educational supervisor, who will be your first point of contact and will assist and support you with your training. The Foundation Programme Curriculum outlines the framework for educational progression that will support the first two years of professional development after medical school. The curriculum is based on the General Medical Council s Good Medical Practice. ( 3
In addition to the clinical experience you will gain in training, learning is also provided for the F1 doctors in the form of interactive, bleep free teaching sessions to the equivalent of 7 days per year or 1 hour per week. This is currently provided at NHH and RGH. This is generally delivered by senior doctors within the Health Board. Your feedback is collected after these sessions and we use this to continually improve the teaching we provide. F2 doctors will be provided with bleep free teaching at both Nevill Hall Hospital and Royal Gwent Hospital. F2 doctors from other Health Board will be able to attend 3 of ABUHB F2 study days. Delivery will continue to be from senior doctors and feedback will continue to guide improvements. We look forward to working with you. Clinical Skills and Simulation It is recognised that with the decrease in hours worked by doctors there is a considerable challenge to ensure that training can occur in the most effective way. It is also recognised that errors in clinical practice frequently occur as a result of poor team working and communication. Simulation of clinical scenarios is one way in which training can be improved. ABUHB has recognised these challenges and has recently invested in a clinical skills and simulation suite. Mr Ashok Vaghela (Consultant in Emergency Medicine, RGH) and Dr Francis Subash (Consultant Anaesthetist, RGH) are the clinical leads for this development. The ABUHB Foundation Programme is an ideal opportunity for you to engage in this type of medical education, which is becoming increasingly popular. A number of simulation teaching events will be taking place during your time with us, which we hope Foundation trainees in particular will take advantage of. 4

Educational Facilities The Friars Education Centre is based in an old Victorian building called The Friars, at the rear of the Royal Gwent hospital site. The past few years have seen it developed from a medical and dental education centre to a truly multidisciplinary education centre. Access to the Centre is available from 7.30am 5:00pm. The postgraduate office is staffed from 7.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. All ABUHB Staff are provided with 9.00am 5.00pm swipe card access to the Education Centre. The Education Centre is the hub of educational activity at the Royal Gwent Hospital and we provide and promote excellent educational opportunities for all levels of staff. In addition, our specialist personnel offer friendly advice and information for all junior doctors on all issues relating to medical education. Living in Newport Standing at the gateway between England and Wales, Newport is a vibrant, forward thinking city. It is steeped in a rich industrial heritage dating from the nineteenth century when it s important strategic location was first recognised. Newport is surrounded by beautiful landscapes which include the Wye Valley, the Vale of Usk, the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Forest of Dean. Newport is home to two of the architectural wonders of Wales the seventeenth century Tredegar House, and the impressive 177ft high Transporter Bridge. In addition Newport Cathedral is a building of considerable antiquity, having been a site of worship since the early 6th century. 7
There has been a great deal of investment in Newport with the Newport International Sports Village, including the Wales National Velodrome, which has been the training ground for Olympians and possible future sportsmen and women of As home to one of the largest complexes of championship golf courses in Europe, Newport City hosted The Ryder Cup at The Celtic Manor Resort in Meanwhile, there is a choice of over 30 other golf courses in the area. Britain s most varied and interesting Roman site at Caerleon, and the tranquillity and history of the Fourteen Locks Canal are just some of the attractions on Newport s doorstep. Just 10 miles along the M4 corridor lies Cardiff, Capital city of Wales with its cosmopolitan nightlife and extensive shopping facilities. Further information on Newport and the surrounding area can be found at 8

Nevill Hall Hospital Nevill Hall Hospital is situated 20 miles from Newport, (along the M4 Motorway) 18 miles from Brecon and 16 miles from Monmouthshire. Abergavenny is a market town and the surrounding area is mainly agricultural. There is a railway station within walking distance from the town centre, and about 2 miles from the hospital. There is a regular bus service from the town centre to the hospital. Nevill Hall was built by a Blaenavon ironmaster and was bought by the Nevill family in 1860 and became the family mansion until it was sold in In 1920 Nevill Hall was eventually sold to the Trustees of the Blaina & District Hospital. In 1951 the Welsh Regional Hospital Board approved Nevill Hall to house 36 patient beds. Dr Aneurin Hughes was appointed as the first consultant physician at Nevill Hall and the lecture theatre in the Education Centre is named after him. Nevill Hall Hospital has 422 beds covering a wide range of specialties including: Accident and Emergency Adult Medicine Anaesthetics Care of the Elderly Cardiology Day Surgery Gastroenterology General Surgery Gynaecology Haematology Intensive Care Neurology Obstetrics Paediatrics Radiology Rehabilitation Rheumatology Trauma & Orthopaedics Urology Counselling and Support You will find friendly and approachable specialist staff in the Education Centres who are on hand to offer you counselling and support in all aspects of medical education, from advice on assessments to support through any difficulties you may have. Our Local Faculty Leads are on hand to offer careers advice and our Foundation Director can lead you through your Foundation years. All new starters within the Health Board are invited to attend a local induction where you are welcomed to your new post. In addition, regular teaching sessions are organised throughout your Foundation Programme. 11
Mess A lounge is provided along each floor of the residence with a television. There is an excellent Junior Doctors mess, which is well furnished with satellite colour television. Recreational facilities are available at the hospital. Accommodation Single accommodation is available at the hospital. As FP1s need to be resident throughout the duration of their period of work the accommodation is provided without charge. Catering The dining room on the first floor is open for hot meals from 7:00am until 7:30pm. Vending machines for drinks and snacks are available at all other times in the coffee lounge situated off the dining room. A buffet bar in the main outpatients department is run by the League of Friends and is open 10:00am to 4:00pm. In addition, a shop in the main concourse is run by the WRVS and opens 10:00am to 6:00pm Parking There is a large car park adjacent to the main hospital building. Car parking is without charge. Library / IT facilities The 24 hour library is situated on the ground floor. It has a comprehensive range of books and journals. 24 hour access is obtained via a swipe card security system. The library is reference only out of hours. There is a separate computer room which can be accessed out of hours (except on weekends). The library is run by a professional librarian, providing a comprehensive library service and offering advice and information in relation to literature searches and research. Social life There is an extensive social network throughout the Hospital focused on the mess. Abergavenny itself has a number of pubs, clubs and restaurants and the hospital is only 31 miles (or a short train journey) away from Cardiff giving access to all that Cardiff has to offer as the Capital City of Wales 12
Education Centre The first postgraduate centre building at Nevill Hall Hospital was completed in 1975, however by 1978, it was obvious that the centre needed an extension to enable it to provide additional services for training and education and this was opened in The single storey building then became inadequate for the growing demands made upon it for statutory medical training. A new Education Centre was officially opened in May 2002, by Jane Hutt (then Welsh Assembly Minister for Health and Social Services). The Education Centre at Nevill Hall is a new, purpose built centre providing a base for all Postgraduate and Undergraduate education. The building also provides an excellent, 24 hour library facility which supports evidence based practice and continuing professional development. Due to its close proximity it does allow staff easy access to the library meetings, seminars and training events. This has enhanced training provided to staff and subsequently the quality of service provided to patients. Today, the centre is increasingly busy hosting courses for consultants, GPs and also Royal College exams, as well as teaching for all departments. Access to the Education Centre and Library facility is by swipe card access only. The swipe card is part of your ID badge. Alongside the lecture theatre, seminar rooms and meeting rooms, there is a clinical skills lab available for use on low fidelity clinical skills equipment. There are plans to introduce high fidelity simulation in the near future. 13
Living in Abergavenny Abergavenny is the traditional gateway to South Wales and to the incomparable Brecon Beacons National Park, as well as to the important World Heritage Site at Blaenavon. The town itself, caressed by the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains and nestling in the famous Usk Valley, is full of historic, architectural, cultural and scenic interest, proud of its past and its traditions and yet up-to-the-minute in meeting the present day needs of tourists and local people. As well as being an excellent centre from which to explore this beautiful area, Abergavenny also has a thriving business community. It is possible to trace Abergavenny's history back to the Roman fort of Gobannium established in 57 or 58 A.D. However, the real birth of the town dates to the period of the Norman conquest of Wales in the late 11th century. In about 1087, Hamelin of Ballon, the conqueror of northern Gwent, built a motte and bailey castle at Abergavenny. At the same time, he established St. Mary's Priory as a cell of the Abbey of St. Vincent near Le Mans. Civilian settlement followed soon after, the early town being protected by a ditch and embankment linked to the castle defences The Abergavenny of the 19th century was a bustling cultural centre and holds an important place in Welsh literary and cultural history. From 1833 to 1854, the Abergavenny Cymreigyddion Society drew the attention of scholars, poets and scientists from all over Europe and beyond, as well as supporting local literati and the ailing wool industries. The town began to expand once more with the coming of the railways in the middle of the 1850s. They remained a major employer in the town until quite recently. Between 1957 and 1968, much of the heart of the old town was destroyed under the old Abergavenny Borough Council's "slum clearance" schemes. Fortunately, some of the citizens of the town saw the full scale of what was being lost and managed to salvage interesting features such as fireplaces, doors, oak panelling and windows. Many of these are now on display in the Abergavenny Museum. Further information can be found at 14
