2 SUMMARY INFORMATION NHS GREATER GLASGOW AND CLYDE EMERGENCY CARE AND MEDICAL SERVICES DIRECTORATE SPECIALTY DOCTOR IN GASTROENTEROLOGY GLASGOW ROYAL INFIRMARY REFERENCE: 23258D This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic unit at the forefront of delivering high quality innovative care to patients with liver and gastrointestinal complaints. The Department is extremely busy and there are opportunities of wide experience of all aspects of clinical gastroenterology and general medicine. The department has an ambulatory investigation and treatments unit with 9 specialist nurses. Specialist liver, IBD, oesophageal and nutrition clinics with nurse input are run in this unit with appropriate on-site investigative facilities, including radiology and physiological measurement. Seven consultant gastroenterologists, together with supporting junior medical staff are responsible for patients in this unit and also for gastroenterology and general medical patients in 41 in-patient beds situated in two separate wards. There is a purpose-built Endoscopy unit with integrated preparation and recovery, and three endoscopy rooms. The unit provides nationally recognised training programmes in gastrointestinal endoscopy and we provide many of the colonoscopy lists for the Bowel cancer screening programme. There are also close service and research links with many other departments in the hospital, especially upper and lower gastrointestinal surgical units providing central care of patients with IBD and cancer for the West of Scotland. You will ensure continuity of care within designated wards, involving care of highly dependant in-patients with complex needs, many of whom would normally be accommodated within a medical HDU. You will have opportunities of full training and experience of all aspects of gastroenterology including basic or advanced endoscopy, depending on experience, while maintaining a link with General (Internal) Medicine. INTRODUCTION NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Emergency Care and Medical Services Directorate JOB DESCRIPTION Specialty Doctor Gastroenterology POST REFERENCE: 23258D The Emergency Care and Medical Services Directorate of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is responsible for managing the Gastroenterology Departments across GG&C. This exciting opportunity to join a dynamic unit at the forefront of delivering high quality, innovative care to patients with liver and gastrointestinal complaints will seek to compliment the skill mix in the unit. The Department is an extremely busy one and there are full opportunities of wide experience of all aspects of clinical gastroenterology and general medicine. The occupant of the post will have opportunities of full training and experience of all aspects of gastroenterology including basic or advanced endoscopy (depending on experience), while maintaining a link with General (Internal) Medicine. Duties will be full-time in Glasgow Royal Infirmary The department has an ambulatory investigation and treatments unit (Ward 32) with 9 specialist nurses. Specialist liver, IBD, oesophageal and nutrition clinics with nurse input are run in this unit with appropriate on-site investigative facilities, including radiology and physiological measurement. Seven consultant gastroenterologists, together with supporting junior medical staff are responsible for patients in this unit and also for gastroenterology and general medical patients in 56 in-patient beds situated separately in wards 8,9 and 11. There is a purpose-built Endoscopy unit with integrated preparation and recovery, and three endoscopy rooms. Therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy, ERCP, EUS, small bowel enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy are routinely performed. The unit provides nationally recognised training programmes in gastrointestinal endoscopy. We provide many of the colonoscopy lists for the Bowel cancer screening programme. There are close service and research links with many other departments in the hospital, especially upper and lower gastrointestinal surgical units providing central care of patients with IBD and cancer for the West of Scotland. A weekly multi-disciplinary academic, radiology and clinical pathology meeting ensures high quality links and interaction with relevant departments. 2. GENERAL INFORMATION Acute Services Division The Acute Services Division is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland. It enjoys close links with Glasgow s three universities and makes a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the brand new 15 million, state of the art, Wolfson Medical School based at
4 Glasgow University. Excellent education facilities are also provided at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The Service in North Glasgow presently employs more than 14,300 staff serving a core catchment population of 560,000. Glasgow Royal Infirmary Glasgow Royal Infirmary () is one of the major teaching complexes of the University of Glasgow. It provides the Accident and Emergency service for the Eastern district of Glasgow (population 161,000) and provides all the major specialties including Intensive Care, Coronary Care and Renal Dialysis, and is well equipped for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. There are Professorial Units in Anaesthetics, Cardiology, Human Nutrition, Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. At Glasgow Royal Infirmary medical emergencies are admitted to an acute medical admissions unit and later triaged to general medical, respiratory, gastroenterology or care of the elderly wards. Four consultant physicians take part in acute receiving each day and do an early morning and evening (receiving ) ward round and admissions range between 30 and 60 per day. There are 4 medical units with primary responsibility to general (internal) medicine. In addition to the Diabetes and Endocrinology ( Second Floor ) Unit there are the University Medical Unit (with specialty interests in Rheumatology, Nutrition and Clinical Pharmacology), the Third Floor Respiratory Unit, and the Fourth Floor Gastroenterology Unit. Consultants from Department of Medicine for the Elderly also contribute to receiving duties. There is a separate Stroke Ward. 3. CURRENT MEDICAL STAFFING ACROSS THE DERTMENT Consultant Staffing: John Morris, Adrian J. Stanley, Ewan H. Forrest, Ruth J. Gillespie, Jack Winter, Dan Gaya and Stephen Barclay.In addition a further two consultants,dr Cahill and Jamieson are based at both and Stobhill ACAD 4. JOB PLAN The successful candidate will ensure continuity of care in wards 8/9 and 11, Glasgow Royal Infirmary (3-5 sessions /week) The post will involve care of highly dependant in-patients with complex needs,many of whom would normally be accommodated within a medical HDU. The post holder will support junior medical staff (FY1/2,CMT and GPVTS) and with appropriate training be involved in delivering many practical procedures in regular use in the department. In addition it will provide essential support to dedicated nurse specialist posts in ward 32 (day Ward) settings.(1-2 sessions/week). Regular participation in specialised IBD or Liver clinics will be encouraged.this may entail participation in clinics at Stobhill ACAD. (1-3 sessions/week,exact sessions to be confirmed as part of negotiation of Job plan) Whilst it is not anticipated that endoscopy skills will be required we would consider training the successful candidate if that were felt to be beneficial for their personal career goals The exact clinical duties of this post are to be confirmed by mutual agreement and will depend on the skills and aspirations of the successful candidate. We would consider candidates who for personal reasons wished to contract for less than 10sessions. This Job Plan for the week is based on a 9 s of Direct Clinical Care (C) duties and 1 of S time. The Job Plan is subject to review as a minimum once a year by the post holder and the Lead Clinician.
