7 Fire Instructions 7 If you discover a fire or you suspect a fire:- 1 Raise the alarm by operating the nearest fire alarm point 2 Remove patients from the area of the fire 3 Close all doors and windows 4 Attack the fire if it is safe to do so without personal risk If you hear the fire alarm A Continuous ring - indicates that there is a fire in your immediate area, your twin area, or in the roof above you B Intermittent ringing - indicates that there is a fire in an adjacent area The NOMINATED FIRE OFFICER or the senior member of staff present will provide instruction on what should be done next. Antrim Area Hospital is a nucleus design building which has the advantage of being compartmented to give maximum protection to the occupants from fire and smoke. Compartments range from half an hour fire resisting to one hour fire resisting, constructed from material designed to withstand fire and smoke, and to protect the escape routes for progressive horizontal evacuation within the hospital. Wide doors and a wide hospital street make it possible to evacuate patients in their beds where necessary. Please ensure that you make yourself aware of the full fire regulations of the Northern Health and Social Care Trust which are available from one of the PGMC staff. No Smoking Policy With effect from 1 May 1998 the Trust implemented a smoke free policy in all premises. The Trust adopted this policy:- As a provider of Health Care the Trust must be a model of good practice reflecting the highest standards in health and safety issues. The Trust has responsibilities towards non-smokers including members of staff, patients and the public. There is increasing evidence surrounding the concerns related to passive smoking. The Trust s Smoking and Health Policy guarantees everyone s right to clean air. The aim of the policy is to ensure that non-smoking is regarded as the norm in all premises throughout the Trust. What does this mean? Trust buildings and vehicles are smoke free. Staff are not permitted to smoke outside the Hospital Main Entrance. Patients will be allowed to smoke only in exceptional circumstances. This will be at the discretion of the Ward
8 8 Manager/Medical Staff and must be adequately supervised. Support is available to staff wishing to stop smoking as outlined in this leaflet. However, staff who smoke in unauthorised areas will be in breach of the Trust Policy and will be leaving themselves liable for action to be taken under the Trust s Disciplinary Procedure.
