2 Statement of Purpose Health and Social Care Act 2008 Version : 10 Date : July 2017 Date of Next Review : 12 months Service Provider Full name: Address: communications@burtonft.nhs.uk Telephone: Provider ID RJF Formed in 1993 as an NHS trust, Burton Hospitals achieved Foundation Trust status in November The Trust provides a wide range of general hospital services and acts as an entry point to specialist tertiary centres and key clinical networks. We provide healthcare services from 3 locations. The main site includes 420 inpatient beds as well as a dedicated endoscopy suite; modern breast care unit; stroke facility; dedicated theatres and the Treatment Centre. In July 2011, under the Transforming Community Services Project, the Trust successfully completed the transfer of community services at Samuel Johnson Community Hospital, Lichfield and in, allowing full integration of these services into Burton Hospitals. Prior to this, the Trust already managed a 9 bedded midwifery led unit at Samuel Johnson Community Hospital which aimed to offer women and their families the opportunity to access high quality maternity care in a comfortable and homely environment that acknowledges and respects their individual needs and wishes. In addition, Burton Hospitals provided a number of Consultant outreach services at these two hospitals. The Trust now manages the Inpatient facilities for the delivery of short-term care, intense rehabilitation or intense intervention in a community setting. A Consultant led Outpatient Service is available at both Community Hospitals, with the exception of the 2 week cancer wait. There is a Minor Injuries Unit at both Community Hospital locations, offering a walk-in, see and treat service for minor physical injury or sudden minor illness. To support these services, a Radiology and Pharmacy service is available at both sites. Sir Robert Peel offers a day surgery unit for minor and intermediate surgical procedures and endoscopic examinations. In addition, on 11 July 2011, the Treatment Centre facility, located on the main campus, transferred to the Trust s management. This facility, together with the two Community Hospitals, gives Burton Hospital and the wider health economy a unique opportunity to review how and where it delivers healthcare.

3 Our main clinical services are organised and managed by two clinical divisions, Medicine and Surgery, each of which are led by a Divisional Director, Divisional Medical Director and Divisional Nurse Director, supported by a dedicated team of senior managers. The Trust has a number of partnership agreements and contracts with other healthcare providers. This enables us to act as a portal to tertiary or more specialist services that are not traditionally provided at a district general hospital. In addition to formal contractual relationships, the Trust has well established links with clinical networks, enabling best practice to be shared and seamless transfer of patients to tertiary centres. This also ensures that our clinicians and other key staff are kept up to date with new research and developments, which in turn benefits the health community. Networks are also effective in sharing capacity and agreeing future service delivery across the environment they serve. Services and Service Users We are the principle provider of acute hospital services for the residents of Burton upon Trent and surrounding areas. The Trust serves a population of some 360,000. The key population urban areas are, Uttoxeter, Lichfield,, Swadlincote and Ashby. The balance is drawn from the rural population and villages surrounding. 4 Quality Strategy Our Quality Strategy is built around a single, concise definition of quality: delivering consistent care that is effective, safe and that provides the most positive patient experience possible. The Quality Improvement Strategy underpins our responses to future developments and at the same time provides a structure for us all to work together to maintain sustainable, high quality care for our patients, their families and carers.
