2 INVITATION TO ATTEND The Conference Organising Committee extends you the warmest invitation to attend SimTecT 2006 Healthcare Simulation Conference. Since its inauguration in 2000, the Conference has evolved into a key forum for simulation in the healthcare industry; bringing together experts in technology, health care education, human factors, patient safety and quality improvement, to tackle the challenges faced by the healthcare industry in the new millennium. The key theme of the SimTecT 2006 Healthcare Simulation Conference is the role to be played by simulation in addressing patient safety challenges which face the complex delivery of healthcare in Australia. A stimulating and innovative program of presentations, panel discussions, interactive workshops and keynote speakers is in the final stages of planning. We look forward to seeing you at the SimTecT 2006 Healthcare Simulation Conference. CONFERENCE ORGANISING COMMITTEE Graham Beaumont Pat Cregan Brendan Flanagan Peter Hill Brian Jolly Michelle Kelly Geoff McDonnell Barry Neame Katie Walker Leonie Watterson Jill White Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC), NSW Nepean Hospital, NSW Southern Health Simulation & Skills Centre, VIC Simulation Industry Association of Australia, NSW Monash University, Centre for Medical & Health Science Education, VIC University of Technology, Sydney, NSW University of New South Wales, NSW Consec Conference Management (SIAA s Conference Organiser), ACT Queensland Health Skills Development Centre, QLD Sydney Medical Simulation Centre, NSW University of Technology, Sydney and President of the NSW Nurses and Midwives Board, NSW Leonie Watterson Conference Convenor Brendan Flanagan Co-convenor CONFERENCE SECRETARIAT It is increasingly clear that simulation in all its many guises is one of the keys to safety and quality in healthcare practice. The technology is with us now to allow doctors and nurses to get through much of their learning curve without subjecting real patients to the same stress. It is also an ideal means of testing skills as time goes by without waiting for live mishaps to occur. As an informed consumer, I certainly want to be reassured that my surgeon can tie knots, and that the doctor doing my cardiac catheter isn t doing his/her first one. 3 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS PAUL G. PRESTON MD Anaesthesiologist Kaiser Permanente Medical Center San Francisco, USA Paul Preston, MD, is a staff anaesthesiologist and assistant chief of quality at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, San Francisco. He completed his anaesthesia residency and obstetric anaesthesia fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, and has been with Kaiser Permanente since He has been active for five years with Critical Event Team Training in the anaesthesia environment and has helped establish a partnership with Drs. David Gaba and Steve Howard at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. This has allowed a number of Kaiser Permanente anaesthesia providers to receive training in Anaesthesia Crisis Resource Management, and helped Kaiser to explore the roles of simulation and training in other areas of the health care system. He has also worked with Dr. Robert Helmreich and colleagues in the UT Austin/Kaiser Permanente Patient Safety Initiative. This collaboration has provided valuable insight, training programs for Human Factors, and measurement tools such as the Safety Attitude Questionnaire. These are being applied to a number of programs, including a multiyear Perinatal Patient Safety Program. Dr. Preston is a frequent volunteer with the American Society of Anaesthesiology (ASA) in its overseas training program. He has taught anaesthesia at a number of hospitals in Africa, where processes are very different than in the United States. Such experiences have increased his awareness of human error, and how systems can contribute to this problem. BONNIE DRIGGERS R.N., M.S., M.P.A Assistant Professor Oregon Health & Science University Schools of Nursing and Medicine USA Founding Member and the Current Chair Oregon Simulation Alliance, USA Bonnie Driggers, R.N., M.S., M.P.A., is an assistant professor at the OHSU Schools of Nursing and Medicine. She has been the director of clinical teaching systems and programs for the OHSU School of Nursing for the past three years. In this role and in her work with the OHSU Simulation and Clinical Learning Center, she has worked in partnership with the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education, OHSU and other health systems and educational programs to design interdisciplinary clinical learning opportunities utilizing simulation as an adjunct to clinical experiences that support the competencies required for healthcare practitioners. Ms Driggers is a founding member and the current chair of the Oregon Simulation Alliance, a statewide network of simulation facilities. Along with Dr. Michael Seropian she co-authored the Oregon Simulation Readiness Report which presented a comprehensive look at desire and readiness for simulation education in Oregon. Ms Driggers is involved in additional collaborative projects around healthcare education in Oregon as the chair of the Oregon Nurse Leadership Council Education committee and as an Executive committee member of the Regional Nursing Clinical Placement Workgroup. While Ms Driggers has held a faculty position at OHSU School of Nursing for many years, she recently transitioned to become the Co-Director of the OCNE Clinical Education Model Project focused on the redesign of clinical education in nursing for the consortium. The model includes the use of simulation as one of several clinical learning activities. For several years she has been faculty for the Post Masters in Nursing Education Simulation course. In partnership with Dr Seropian and the staff of the OHSU Simulation Center, Ms Driggers provides statewide simulation education and consults throughout the United States, Canada and overseas in the area of simulation education, program development and implementation. Prior to her current role she served in a variety of management and administrative roles at OHSU Hospital, including two years as the Interim Chief Nurse Executive and Associate Director for Patient Care Services. She has been a member of the faculty of the School of Nursing for many years and a member of the faculty at the School of Medicine since
