3 PHILOSOPHY The Saskatchewan Nurses Foundation believes that: all people, at some time in their lives, will be recipients of nursing care; recipients of nursing care, and nurses themselves, desire nursing care to include the use of current knowledge based on research; society benefits when nurses are highly knowledgeable, competent professionals; society wishes to share with individual nurses and employers the responsibility to contribute financially to the efforts of nurses to enhance their competence through education and research; the Foundation is an effective mechanism through which society can contribute financially to the education of nurses; and the Foundation has the privilege and responsibility to make its work known throughout Saskatchewan, interprovincially and nationally Annual Report Page 3
4 PRESIDENT S REPORT SNF PRESIDENT S REPORT As a registered charity providing financial assistance to eligible Registered Nurses (RNs) in support of continuing education, the Saskatchewan Nurses Foundation (SNF) continues to be a relevant and appreciated financial resource. Our membership for the June, 2015 to May, 2016 membership year was 144 members: 128 RN; 4 RN(NP); 1 RN(retired); 2 RPN; 5 Nursing students; and 4 members of the public. Of the 128 RNs, 43 were newly graduated RNs; SNF provides a one year complimentary membership to graduates with their initial registration as an RN who complete the membership application. Great effort is put into increasing membership each year. We continue to run the membership challenge between SUN and SRNA at their annual meetings. This is a friendly, collegial competition to see which annual meeting can obtain the most memberships and serves as a perfect opportunity to communicate the mandate of SNF and also encourage RNs to apply for funding. The Board also continues to work to find new and better ways to raise funds, beyond membership fees, to continue our efforts to provide bursaries to RNs. Work with Larry Christie to add a sponsorship segment to the fundraising efforts is ongoing. We also received funding through the development of two new awards, the creation of the Elizabeth Bassendowski Award and the Walker Mireau Bursary. We greatly appreciate and thank the donors for supporting SNF s work. Although a major fund raising event was not held this year in order to prepare for participation with the SRNA as they plan for their 100 th Anniversary, several smaller activities were held. The annual 50/50 draw was also held at both the SUN and SRNA annual meetings. These draws netted the association $ The Foundation continues to accept on-line contributions through As well, people have the option to use Paypal to purchase SNF memberships online through the SNF website. As identified, SNF is working with SRNA to plan a joint fundraising event for the SRNA 100 th Anniversary celebrations. We encourage members to watch for further SRNA and SNF communication on this event in the near future. SNF continues to use computer based technology to facilitate meetings. This has greatly contributed to the ability for RNs anywhere in the province to not only participate in the annual meeting, but also for RNs to become Board Members and participate in the work of the Foundation without having to travel. This has greatly facilitated involvement of RNs throughout the province and saved the Foundation travel costs. A topic of primary focus at this year s meetings relates to the amount of money awarded each year. Many of the Board Members feel it is important to ensure that the awards are equitably distributed each year, rather than amounts being dependent upon the number of applicants in any 2015 Annual Report Page 4
5 given application term. Consultation with SNF financial advisors is necessary to determine feasibility of this change and will occur this winter in order to determine the Foundation s ability to standardize bursary amounts. A decision in this regard will be shared with members once finalized. Janis Hall, Sandra Bassendowski and Liz Domm have completed their terms. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank these great RN leaders for their contribution to SNF. I would also like to encourage all RNs to consider becoming members of SNF and potentially running for a Board of Directors position. In closing, we would like to thank Robin Evans for her continued work as Executive Director of SNF. We are excited about the upcoming opportunities in 2017 and hope that you will consider joining us in the work we do to support RN education. Sincerely, Beverly Balaski, RN President, Board of Directors, SNF SNF Board of Directors: Beverly Balaski, RN, President Sandra Bassendowski, RN, (on leave) Denise Dick, RN (SUN), Moose Jaw Liz Domm, RN, Janis Hall, RN, Watrous Donna Marin, RN (SRNA), Cindy Peternelj Taylor, RN, Saskatoon Twyla Salm, (non-nurse member) 2015 Annual Report Page 5

28 SNF FACTS Saskatchewan Nurses Foundation SNF was founded in 1981 through an amendment to the Registered Nurses Act. It was registered as a Non-Profit Corporation on September 15, The SNF Bursary Program has been developed to: 1. Foster excellence in nursing. 2. Further the contribution of the nursing profession to society. The Fund The Foundation was launched with a $50, gift from the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association. Individual and organizational gifts are sought each year to build the fund. Eligibility To receive assistance, individuals must be current members of the SRNA, have completed the equivalent of at least one year of experience as a registered nurse in Saskatchewan, and be pursuing a degree program or clinical course judged applicable to nursing. Upon completion of studies, bursary recipients must spend at least one year working in the field of nursing in Saskatchewan for every $ awarded. The Need is Great Nurses are the largest health care profession, numbering over 11,000 in Saskatchewan. The changing environment in which health care is delivered, the knowledge explosion and advances in technology together impact on the need for continuing education for nurses. This continuing education will contribute to safe competent nursing care for people of Saskatchewan. Because the demand exceeds funds available, SNF continues to seek donations to enable it to meet its objectives. Bursaries Awarded From 1981 to 2015 SNF awarded 424 bursaries valued at $405, to Saskatchewan nurses. In addition 20 Trauma Nurse Core Course Bursaries each valued at $ were awarded Annual Report Page 28
