4 S P E A K E R S Dianne Adamson With a background in hospital management and ten years experience consulting to prestigious clients in the Health Care Industry and Aged Care Industry, Di is known for her ability to connect with people in a way which allows her to uncover the core issues and influence people to achieve outstanding results. Her company Adamson and Associates specialises in optimising personal and organisational performance. She is an inspirational speaker, facilitator and executive coach. Di stimulates, energises and challenges people in the areas of leadership, complex communication skills, team skills and effecting cultural change. She is a regular guest presenter on the Aged Care Television channel and is a presenter throughout Australia and New Zealand. Steve Aivaliotis Steve is the Director/Mediator for Proactive Complaints Management. He has a BA Psychology and has worked for 5 years setting up Adult Day Care Centres for local government, three years as a Hostel Manager of three low care facilities and for 13 years as a Senior Advocate for Residential Care Rights. Steve has also had involvement with a wide range of activities some of which include: Alternative dispute resolution process he has a current Mediator Practicing Certificate; Member of the Elder Abuse Committee in Victoria, Member of Elder Abuse Project Office of the Public Advocate; Authored the aged care section of Law Handbook Fitzroy Legal Service, and provided national training in Canberra for the Complaints Resolution Officers, and much more. Bettina Arndt Bettina Arndt trained as a clinical psychologist before becoming well known as one of Australia s first sex therapists. As editor of Forum magazine, she taught medical students, doctors and other professionals and worked in the media educating the public about this fascinating subject. She then moved on to writing about broader social issues, working as a columnist and feature writer for leading newspapers and magazines. As a respected social commentator she was invited onto government advisory committees covering issues from family law to childcare and ageing. Bettina has recently conducted two major research projects involving issues very relevant to older people. The first looked at the problem of mismatched desire, published in the best-selling book, The Sex Diaries. A second project focused on male sexuality and particularly how couples cope with erection dysfunction- published in What Men Want. Bettina is much in demand talking to audiences across Australia about these fascinating topics. Pam Bridges Pam works as the Residential Care Manager for Aged Care Queensland where she also manages the consultancy activities in addition to assisting members with day to day operational problems, working as an advocate with various government and regulatory bodies, as well as representing the industry in a range of national advisory, consultative and policy groups. She is a member of the ACFI Monitoring Group looking at the policy implications for the overspend. Pam is a Registered Nurse, Aged Care Quality Assessor and is on the National Nurse Advisor and Administrator panel for DoHA. Pam has been honoured to be the President of NIMAC for the past 14 years. Patricia Cameron Hill and Shayne Yates Patricia Cameron-Hill BA. App. Sc. and Dr Shayne Yates M.B.B.S. are world experts on Stress and Humour. Their careers as a nurse and doctor give them a special understanding of stress, its consequences and its cure. Laughter Medicine is what they prescribe in their best-selling book You won t die laughing and laughter medicine is what they dispense to their audiences. They balance the funny side of stress with the serious side by including strategies for resisting and reducing stress. Laila Chalustowski Laila has been the Director of Nursing at Prins Willem Alexander Village on Brisbane s bayside for the past six years. Stepping into the role at a time when the facility had been sanctioned for the second time and was facing enormous challenges. She, along with a band of willing helpers, and despite many obstacles and stumbles along the way, has achieved sustained full compliance with the Accreditation Standards whilst simultaneously building an aged care service to be proud of. Laila along with Anneke Oostra travelled with the 2010 Study Tour to the Netherlands and provided the group with invaluable assistance with not just translating but a myriad of other cultural specific issues. Professor Colleen Cartwright Colleen is the Director of ASLaRC Aged Services Unit at Southern Cross University. She has extensive teaching and research experience in ageing, ethics and medical decisions at the end of life, at national and international levels, with publications in major journals and a number of book chapters. Colleen regularly runs information and training sessions for community and health professional groups on ethical and legal issues, including advance care planning, informed consent, capacity and reablement of frail older people. 5 S P E A K E R S Cameron Dean Cameron Dean is a Partner in McCullough Robertson s Workplace Relations and Safety Group. He has over 14 years experience in workplace relations matters, including in relation to industrial disputes, employment terminations and redundancies, contract drafting, restraints of trade, harassment and discrimination issues and acting as a mediator in employee grievances. Cameron also heads up the firm's Workplace Health and Safety team and regularly provides specialist advice and representation to clients in relation to workplace health and safety compliance issues and prosecutions. Cameron is heavily involved in providing continuing education and updates to clients to ensure they stay informed of changes affecting their operations. Judy Forrest Judy Forrest is an RN and independent consultant in Infection Prevention and Control. She has a grad. Cert. in communicable diseases is a Fellow of the College of Nursing and Fellow of the Australian Association of Practice Managers. Judy is principal of Bug Control Australia and Bug Control New Zealand, providing advice on issues of Infection Prevention and Control to a variety of areas including residential care. Currently she lectures and advises on issues of Infection Prevention and Control to the Aged Care Association NSW, New Zealand Aged Care Association and The College of Nursing (NSW), and represents aged care as a consultant to the Executive of the Infection Control Association NSW Inc. Judy has also represented the residential aged care sector at both Federal and State levels on food service risk validation projects and development of MRSA Guidelines for residential care services. Judy s busy practices are based in Sydney, Australia and Christchurch, New Zealand. Brenda Gordon Brenda originally hails from Ottawa Canada arriving in Australia in She holds a Master Human Services, majoring in the Study of Disability and currently completing a Master Human Services, majoring in Rehabilitation Counselling. During Brenda s 17 years experience she has held appointments as Rehabilitation Case Manager Work Cover Queensland, Senior Compensation and Rehabilitation Manager Department of Defence and Law Clerk Workers Compensation Division Slater & Gordon. In 2009 Brenda became a Director and the Operations Manager of PHOENIX Workplace Health Pty Ltd. Brenda specialises in workplace compensation claims, early intervention of return to work planning, complex workplace injury management, and conflict resolution. Lee-Ann Irwin Lee-Ann is the CEO of The Whiddon Group and for over a decade has participated in the aged care milieu through membership of NAMPAC NSW and as a Director of ACAA NSW. She is a Registered Nurse and has business qualifications and held senior roles in the health sector for over twenty years. Lee-Ann has long believed that Bingo was not the panacea of therapeutic leisure management and has promoted for many years the benefits of alternative leisure management strategies and has supported the introduction of the Play Up Program to the clients and staff of Whiddon Group Easton Park. Julie Letts Julie Letts has been Principal Policy Analyst, Clinical Ethics in the NSW Ministry of Health since 2002 and is now Manager, Clinical Ethics and Policy Unit. She has been responsible for developing all existing NSW Health policy guidelines related to end of life decision-making and advance care planning. Julie managed the Conflict Resolution in End of Life Settings project in 2010 and is currently managing a major policy review producing a Strategic and Implementation Framework for advance care planning in NSW for the next 5 years. She was a member of the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council Working Group that produced the National Framework for Advance Care Directives. Julie has a Masters degree in Bioethics and previously more than 15 years clinical and teaching experience in Victorian and NSW teaching hospital critical care units. Christie Miller Christie is a Special Counsel at Clayton Utz where she specialises in industrial relations, employment and discrimination law. She has an in-depth knowledge of the Federal and Queensland Industrial relations schemes and has represented clients in various jurisdictions. Christie acts for a broad client base which includes the health sector, and her knowledge and experience across industry boundaries allows her to apply innovative solutions that address the needs of business. Her areas of expertise include (but are not limited to): strategic industrial relation advice; unfair dismissal advocacy and advice; advice and assistance in relations to all aspects of performance management, conducting workplace investigations and terminations of employment; and defence of workplace health and safety prosecutions and related coronial inquest representation and advice. Leonie Mulheran Leonie has worked in the community and aged care industry for over 15 years. She first graduated from QUT, then worked at the Royal Brisbane and Wesley Hospital before finding herself working in an educator s role with TENA. Within a year Leonie was able to branch out into Business Development and then became State Manager at the age of 25. After 11 years with TENA Leonie spent four years working with Intouch managing the Continence Aids Assistance Scheme for the Department of Health and Ageing, the DVA RAP scheme and contracts such as the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme. Leonie has three beautiful boys (Lachlan 8, Cooper 5 and Jackson 1). In 2011 Leonie has had the pleasure of working for Simavita which allows her to bring all of her experience together. 6 S P E A K E R S Julie McStay Julie holds a Bachelor of Laws, QUT; Master of Laws (Major in Health Law), QUT; and she was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Courts of Queensland and New South Wales and the High Court of Australia. She heads Hynes Lawyers health, aged care and disability services team. Julie joined Hynes Lawyers after specialising for many years in providing corporate and commercial advice to health, aged care and disability service providers at a national tier one law firm. She has extensive experience in providing advice on negotiated mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, asset redevelopment, regulatory compliance and operational matters for clients in these industries and has acted for public, private and not-for-profit providers. Julie also has extensive experience in developing and implementing training programs for health, aged care and disability service providers. She has developed many varied training programs for her clients ranging from the roll out of an educational program to all staff of a national aged care provider to programs for individual board members of small not-for-profit organisations. Marie-Anne Schull Marie-Anne Schull originally trained as a nurse and then went on to study Business Communication, majoring in Public Relations. She worked in public relations for several years and then continued studying and completed a Graduate Diploma in Education and Training. Marie-Anne then combined her education and work experience and worked in the health/ education sector working for registered training organisations and then working at Alzheimer s Australia Vic for 8 years firstly as an Education Officer and then Education Co-ordinator. She has also worked as the Training Manager for the National Workplace and Social Enterprise within beyondblue overseeing the facilitators that deliver beyondblue s program, and was also responsible for ensuring the educational integrity of the programs. Marie-Anne is now in a new role at beyondblue as the Older Adults Project Manager. This exciting new role combines Marie-Anne experience as a nurse, her work in the aged care sector and her educational expertise. Jenny Smith Jenny is a Registered Nurse with other certificates behind her in relation to working in the Aged Care sector. She has recently established her own consultancy business Betta Health Outcomes. Jenny has presented numerous seminars on many topics relating to wound management & best practice. Jenny has been able to provide constant updated information to the aged care industry on the holistic approach to wound management & contemporary research findings. Jenny is able to provide advice on the most appropriate products available in today's market, with the most effective & cost efficient outcomes. She has experience in working with over 500 aged care facilities over the past 18 years and provided training programs for a variety of health care professionals, tailored to meet the needs of a particular facility. Jenny s education sessions are informative, but more importantly, are interactive, which makes the whole learning experience enjoyable & stress free. Jenny is a valued & respected member within the aged care community. Jenny has been a proactive presence in assisting care staff to improve skin integrity & wound care, within the industry. Pat Sparrow Pat is currently Director, Aged Care Reform Engagement for COTA Australia. She is responsible for consumer engagement on the aged care reform process including supporting the Minister for Ageing s Conversations on Ageing around Australia. Pat was Policy Manager, Deputy and Acting CEO for Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA) from 2001 to During this time Pat worked across all areas including residential and community care, housing and retirement living. Prior to this she spent some 15 years working in aged and community care program management, policy development in health, disability services and youth affairs as well as working in inter government relations. Improvement to, and reform of, aged care services has been a major focus of Pat s career which has included managing The Grand Plan campaign and working to improve the image of aged care through the Can t Do It Without You image campaign. She is passionate about supporting older Australians to make the most of their lives and ensuring that aged care services are there to do just that. Daniel Weule Daniel is the founder and Managing Director of 5D Consulting, a group that specialises in supporting executives in organisations to develop and implement strategy to produce sustainable results. They achieve this through a strong focus on innovation and future business environments. Daniel is a very experienced management consultant and a master facilitator and he has worked in a wide range of contexts. He has also worked as an Adjunct Professor for QUT and has authored contributions to the book The Future of Innovation. Daniel has worked across multiple industries as well as Education Queensland, Queensland Treasury Department of Local Government and Planning as well as Queensland Health. Jane Winter Jane Winter is the Medical Affairs Manager for Nestle Healthcare Nutrition. She is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian and has experience working in both clinical and public health settings.
