4 Welcome Message from the ACT Chief Nurse On behalf of ACT Nurses and Midwives, I welcome all conference delegates to the 3rd Biennial Australian Capital Region Nursing and Midwifery Research Centre Conference. This year s conference theme, Setting an Agenda for Nurses and Midwives in the 21st Century, is particularly relevant in light of the increasing complexity of health care, rising costs driven by an ageing population and the communities expectations of the right to universal health care. We need to critically examine how nursing and midwifery education and research can lead and inform the healthcare agenda and be proactive in preparing the workforce to meet these health care challenges. We need to use research and education to ensure improvements in health technologies, new drug therapies and other clinical care advances are best used, how we can engage effectively with the community and how the prevailing culture affects clinical care. I welcome your participation in this conference. Knowing what challenges us as health professionals and working together to meet these challenges will ensure that Setting an Agenda for Nurses and Midwives in the 21st Century places us at the forefront of contemporary practice. I would like to acknowledge the Keynote and Plenary Speakers, colleagues who inspire us to grow as health professionals. I thank the concurrent session presenters and the poster presenters. The presentation of their research makes us proud of our achievements as nurses and midwives. My thanks also to the Conference Planning Committee and Scientific Committees and most importantly, thank you too for your interest and attendance. I would like to convey a very special thank you to our sponsors. Their generosity enables us to convene our conference at a world class venue with internationally regarded speakers. Once again, welcome to the 3rd Biennial Australian Capital Region Nursing and Midwifery Research Centre Conference. I look forward to two days of stimulating presentations, rigorous conversation and fun. Veronica Croome ACT Chief Nurse 2
