10 Wednesday, October 2nd at 4pm Room 017, Southwest Forest Science Complex (Bld 82) School of Forestry, Northern Arizona University PRESENTS... Mexican Gray Wolves and the Western Apache Dr. Sarah Rinkevich, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Southwest Region An Interdisciplinary Approach to Study Endangered Species on Native American Lands in Arizona Photo credit: Gary Kramer / USFWS One of the most polarizing endeavors in the field of conservation biology is the restoration and management of gray wolves (Canis lupus) in North America. With the recovery of the Rocky Mountain and Great Lakes populations of gray wolves, attention is now on the struggling Mexican gray wolf (C. l. baileyi) recovery program. The Mexican gray wolf was on the brink of extinction by the time it was protected by the Endangered Species Act in 1976 when the gray wolf subspecies survived only in captivity. Other possible subspecies of gray wolves that existed in Arizona historically are now extinct. The Mexican Wolf Recovery Program has been divisive since its beginning in 1998 because of continued conflicts with cattle ranching and basic distrust of government programs by ranchers and Native American Tribes. My project combined non-invasive sampling techniques, state of the art conservation genetics, and ethnography in order to answer key questions about Mexican gray wolves on tribal lands. I used scat detection dogs to find wolf scat on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation during 2008 and I estimated the population of wolves on the reservation as well as assessed diet. I strayed from the dichotomous approach to resource management that considers natural resources and Native American culture independent of each other by investigating the cultural significance of the wolf in Apache traditional and contemporary society. I interviewed Apache elders and practitioners for a comprehensive assessment of how the wolf was viewed on the landscape prior to the reservation and how the Apache people relate to the current reintroduced wolf population. Lastly, I discuss how Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) contributes to the field of conservation biology by providing a discussion of the scientific merits of TEK, publications, and current uses. All seminars are 4:00 to 5:00 PM in Room 017 of the Southwest Forest Science Complex (Building 82) on the campus of Northern Arizona University. A reception for the speaker with food and refreshments precedes the seminar in the lounge in front of the seminar room (3:30-4:00 PM). No parking permit is needed for any vehicle with state, federal, or tribal license plates. Other persons can get a free permit from the host during the 30-minute reception before each seminar. Please contact Serra Hoagland (sjh285@nau.edu) for details.
