5 THURSDAY, JULY 27, :00am 2:00pm Check Out McMahon Patio Check Out Instructions: See page 3 of your Student Guide for Check-Out Instructions. Airport shuttle times will be posted at least 24 hours prior to your departure. Look for lists posted on your floors and in/around the elevators. Please see the office ASAP if your listed information is incorrect. All students must be checked out of the program by 12:00 pm and must vacate the dorm by 2:00pm. Please be checked out of the program and at the bus meeting point 20 minutes prior to your departure. Check-Out To-Do List: Pack Belongings (check all drawers and closets) Clean your room and bathroom. Make sure all trash has been collected. Place linens and towels inside your pillow case and place on your bed. Leave pillow and folded blanket on the bed. Check-out w/ an NSLC staff member on the floor. You must have your door tag signed by a TA to proceed to the check out table. You will be turned away if you do not have it in hand. Return key/card/fob to NSLC staff at Check-Out on the McMahon Patio. Sign-out of the program and depart campus. 6 Guest Speakers & Program Partners Stu Trefry Washington State Conservation Commission Stu Trefry is a graduate of WSU. He has worked in the agricultural and natural resource policy arena since 1981, providing guidance on water quantity and quality, wetlands, endangered species, energy, forest practices, growth management, and related congressional and legislative issues. He represents the National Association of State Conservation Agencies on the National Association of Conservation Districts Urban and Community Resource Policy Group and is a 1992 graduate of and seminar coordinator for the Washington AgForestry Leadership Program. Stu provides direct service and support to these conservation districts: Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Lewis County, Pacific, and Wahkiakum. As the Conservation District Development and Capacity Manager, Stu also develops and implements ongoing agency leadership and training curriculum for district supervisors and staff. Bonnie J. Becker, Ph. D. Professor of Marine Ecology, UW Tacoma At UW Tacoma, I teach a range of courses focused on ecology, invertebrate zoology, and conservation biology, and I particularly enjoy creating authentic, experiential learning opportunities for my students. I believe in the transformative power of undergraduate research to engage students of all backgrounds and majors as a way of answering questions and exploring the world around us. I am dedicated to teaching writing in my science courses, since the written word is the most direct way to practice critical thinking and solidify learning. It s also one of the most crucial skills needed in any career going forward. Whenever possible, I try to take my students out into the world, though field trips and community-based service learning projects. More recently, I have been experimenting with ways to bring maintain this teaching approach in a hybrid and online learning environment. uw.nslcleaders.org 6

7 Dorothy Paun Associate Professor UW College of the Environment Yang Su UW College of the Environment Dorothy Paun uses a multidisciplinary approach to explore what she calls triple bottom line sustainability performance interrelationships, that is, among corporate environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and financial performance. She argues that corporations will be incentivized if we learn that decreasing their ecological footprints or increasing their social responsibility can lead to higher profits. For her work, she has received a prestigious Fulbright Distinguished Chair Research Award, been a visiting professor at Canadian, Finnish, German, and Italian universities, and, prior to her academic career, was a both a stockbroker and Alaskan park ranger. Paun's SPA System, a tool for assessing corporate sustainability performance, was published in the Journal of Sustainability Education in December John Hayes Mount Rainier Institute John started leading the effort to establish Mount Rainier Institute in Before coming to western Washington, John was the Executive Director of another residential environmental learning center in partnership with the Nation al Park Service at Dunes Learning Center. He has worked in the Environmental Education field for over 20 years. He has taught and coordinated environmental education programs in Vermillion County Illinois, and for Indiana University s Bradford Woods.
