We hope that it was a successful year in achieving your goals. Whether you had goals to make new friends, learn a new skill, get better at a skill, or receive a blue ribbon or trophy, it s important to have goals of all sizes. While we are preparing for the next 4-H year, begin thinking what goals you will have for the H year. We are looking forward to another great 4-H year! A s we look to another upcoming year it is important to understand the changes that will be occurring across the county. Enrollment for Indiana 4-H begins November 1, 2014 and will continue to January 15th, Drop/Add Deadline will be June 1, The program fee remains at $15 per child, $45 max per family. The program fees cover insurance, project curriculum development, and club enrichment activities. The same enrollment dates will apply to Mini 4-H (grade 2). There is no county program fee for Mini 4-H. The State 4-H program is moving to an online data management program which will allow you access to view your information and update your contact information as needed. Information on completing 4-H Online Enrollment will be sent out soon. Please note that this will be different from the online enrollment that has been done in the past. Additionally, it is imperative that you enroll by January 15th in order to continue your traditional involvement with the 4-H program, this includes all county activities. This is a big change that we are all undergoing, but in the end it is going to make things very user friendly and will allow us to provide year around opportunities for 4-Hers. This is a great step in the future of Indiana 4-H. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding through this process, and please do not hesitate to call the Tippecanoe County Extension Office if you have questions. Camp will be held at Camp Tecumseh June 3-5, Applications will be available soon at the Extension Office or online: Application Deadline is Friday, January 9th, Bi-State 4-H Judges, Junior Leaders & Leaders Clinic As 2015 is approaching, make sure to mark your calendars for the Area 5 Bi- State 4-H Judges & Leaders clinic. This training will provide youth development opportunities and growth to all 4-H club leaders, juniors leaders, volunteers and project judges. It will be held on Saturday, February 7th, 2015 at the Knoy Education Center in Cloverdale, In. Thank you notes, designed by Tippecanoe Co. 4-Hers, are available at the Extension Office. Update from the State 2014 National Youth Science Day: Rockets to the Rescue! The H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) experiment is Rockets to the Rescue! This exciting, interactive learning experience will actively involve thousands of youth from throughout the county. The official date of the NYSD is October 8th 2014, however clubs are encouraged to participate in this event at any time. A number of resources can be found online at: h.org/4-h-national-youth-science-day/ or contact Jo at nickell@purdue.edu for more information. We hope everyone will take advantage of NYSD this year and the resources available! Volunteers Needed We are always in need of wonderful adults who want to share their skills, knowledge, and time with 4- H ers. If you would be like to help or know someone who would be willing to help please let us know as soon as possible. 4 PAGE 4 TIPPECANOE TABLOID COMMUNICATIONS State 4-H Project Updates INFORMATIVE 4-H PRESENTATION- No teams in 2015 PROFESSIONAL PERSUASIVE PRESENTATION- Teams will be added for junior and senior in Contestants are to submit three (3) sets of accompanying handouts at registration. These handouts should not just be a copy of the presentation, but ate to include supporting documentation (graphs, charts, photos, etc.) and will be provided to the judges. ELECTRIC - Exhibit requirements: Division 5: Upon completion of W iring Around Your Home you will exhibit one of the following at your local or county fair: Display board, poster, equipment wiring board, or written report in one of the following areas: (1) Electrical work that you did around your home or other location and how you accomplished it (preferably with models, pictures or a small part of your total installation). Be sure to include a wiring diagram of your project with your exhibit. (2) Analyze the current wiring situation in your home or out buildings and develop a new system that you feel would be better. Be sure to show diagrams of the old and new systems. Also, explain why the new proposed system is better. (3) Any topic covered in this manual. Note: Poster and display boards should be 22" tall by 28" wide. Equipment wiring boards differ from display boards in that they show hands-on wiring techniques (i.e., complete wiring of a light controlled by a three-way switch system). Equipment wiring boards should be no larger than 3' by 3'. The boards should be designed so that they can be displayed horizontally. ENTOMOLOGY - Display: ID 401 A-F cards Cards A-F (for grades 3-8) and ID 401-I cards (for grades 9-12) are to be placed inside the display box in an attractive manner. ID 401-I cards, (for grades 9-12), should be placed in the lower right hand corner of box #1. FOODS & HEALTH- Revised manuals, new exhibit requirements will be released when finalized. GENEALOGY- No exhibit changes, manual revised, but no major changes. SOIL AND WATER SCIENCE Revised and updated curriculum with new exhibit requirements: Create an exhibit that shows the public what you learned in the soil and water science project this year. Poster exhibits must be displayed horizontally, sized 22" x 28" foam-core board or poster board mounted on a firm backing, and covered in clear plastic or other transparent material. Notebook exhibits must be displayed in a standard three ring binder. Choose one of the options listed below, appropriate for your grade in school. Use an appropriate exhibit title. Be sure to include a label with your name, grade, 4-H club, and county in the lower right hand corner.

Title your poster, "Advanced Soil and Water Science - Mentor." WEATHER AND CLIMATE SCIENCE Revised and updated curriculum. 6 PAGE 6 TIPPECANOE TABLOID ARTS AND CRAFTS County Handbook Changes #11 ADDED For safety purposes any craft exhibit that resembles a life-sized or realistic gun, sword, knife, or look alike weapon will be judged but not displayed. #12 Projects of Lego construction (or other block building type), three dimensional scenery (including war, construction and other actions scenes), or items primarily related to another available Arts and Crafts category are not acceptable as Miscellaneous Crafts. Any projects that contain Legos (or other building block type) are to be entered in Legos. They should be entered and judged within their respective categories. LEGOS Separate grade 3 from 4 &5 Grade 3 Add 1. Kits only bring kit box when judged 2. Display board should be constructed of material 1/4 thick; size should be no larger than 16 x Construct a single item in the form of transportation (car, truck, plane boat, semi, mon ster truck, etc.) 4. CURFEW General rule No one, except for assigned night watchmen, should remain on the fair grounds after midnight.

The animal will receive the lowest placing in the class. Change #3 to align with State Fair rules: Registered heifers must have an 840-RFID tag number along with the tattoo. They must be listed completely and correctly on the animal ID enrollment webpage by May 15th. All preview heifers must be listed on the animal ID enrollment webpage by May 15th. #10 All cattle shall be on member s premises after enrollment date unless approved by the Beef Committee and Exhibit Association. #5 Increase limit to allow showing 4 steers from 3 #13 Add state fair terminology: False switches and the use of artificial hair is prohibited. Only natural hair growing from its original location will be permitted. #25 Change the wording from purebred heifers can show in purebred class to must - in order to align with State Fair mandates. #26 Remove Tippecanoe County 4-Her to state Any current Indiana 4-H member may assist with grooming and clipping. To preview heifer class add All heifers must be weaned and dehorned. Classes will be determined after beef check-in at the fair. COMMUNICATIONS will be revised to meet state requirements. COMPUTERS Level 1 #3 Computer presentation added the following programs: Prezi, imovie, Windows Movie Maker for same level removed Calendar option. 9 OCTOBER 2014 PAGE 9 FOODS Add statement in generals rules Grade 12 4-H members should not exhibit the same product they entered as an exhibit in a previous year. Grades add pie crust must be made from scratch. Add to general rules phyllo dough, puff pastry, pie filling and pie crust must be made from scratch; it cannot be purchased. GOATS Add: If you attend 2 goat workshops in the current 4-H year, and are a fourth year or older member, you do not have to complete the manual. #8 add general rules (i.e. Angora, Boer, and Boer crosses) regarding horns #17 add A herdsmanship award will be given to a member than shows excellent goat husbandry. SCRABOOKING Under General Rules add the following: #6 Photos/pictures and memorabilia must be included in each scrapbook, but not necessarily on each page. If you do not have photos for a memory you want to include in your book it is OK to use pictures. If you have pictures on the same page, one or the other has to be encased in a photo safe pocket/sleeve. Cropping rules for pictures are the same as photos. Pictures do not count as memorabilia. #8 Reword If your memorabilia is a hard 3-D item such as a medal it is suggested you take a picture of the medal and include it in the memorabilia pocket with the ribbon it was attached to instead of using the hard medal. You may go back after the fair and put the ac tual medal in your book. Intermediate Cropping add Silhouetting (cutting out a specific item in a picture) is not allowed. Advanced Cropping Silhouette cropping can be used in addition to techniques you have learned in a previous division. This is cutting out a specific item in a picture. VETERINARY SCIENCE Add to general rules Level 2 and 3 posters may be a trifold poster with a display, as long as total exhibit size does not exceed measurements stated above (22 x 28 ). Add to each level have the activities signed off by the superintendent and include your manual with your exhibit in an envelope on the back of your exhibit). Level 3 complete 3 activities from the manual

Adding -level 2 a. or project using same or like skills set SWINE #6 add Each exhibitor may enroll a maximum of 15 barrows and 15 gilts. There will be NO litters exhibited. #8 A maximum of 6 pigs may be exhibited per exhibitor. A member may exhibit up to a maximum of 3 barrows and 3 gilts of ANY breed including crossbreds. #23 add Grand Swine Showmanship champion will be selected during the night show after the selection of the Grand Gilt. Add the following: Bred & Owned In place of Litters The exhibitor s first and last name must be listed on the pedigree as the owner and breeder to be eligible for the Bred and Owned selection. There may be multiple names listed as long as the additional names are in the immediate family. The exhibitor must have owned the dam at the time of breeding. The exhibitor must be listed on the pedigree as BOTH the breeder and the owner of the barrow or gilt. The exhibitor must declare that his/her gilt is eligible for Bred and Owned awards at the time of check-in. The 4-H member must bring a photo copy of the pedigree at check-in. If not declared at the time of check-in, you will not be eligible for selection on show day. The highest placing of the top 5 of each class will be selected and eligible to return for the selection of the Champion Bred and Owned Barrow and Gilt. An overall Bred and Owned Champion and Reserve Champion gilt and barrow will be selected by the judge after completion of gilt show and completion of the barrow show. Purebreds will only be eligible as there are no ways to officially track crossbreds. Premier Exhibitor Throughout the show day, points will be kept based on an exhibitor s performance in class, showmanship, and champion selections. Total points will be based on the exhibit tor s top 4 animals. In the event of a tie, a fifth animal s score will serve as the tie- breaker. The top 5 overall premier exhibitors will be awarded during or after the night show.

11 OCTOBER 2014 PAGE 11 Veterinary Exam at the time of Check-in- 30. At check-in an onsite licensed veterinarian will be inspecting all incoming swine un loading at the fairgrounds. At the discretion of the extension educator, superintendents, current BOAH recommendations, and the veterinarian, a final decision will be made prior to the fair as to what will be addressed at swine check-in. A veterinarian will also be involved in the animal surveillance of the swine barn to determine if any out of the ordinary sickness event is occurring, and if so, can make any health related decisions. Any animals displaying signs of illness contagious to humans OR other pigs will be sent home at check in or through out fair week. HORSE AND PONY #4 Clean stall, stall decorations, buckles except the all around buckle All around buckle rules Buckle is given to one 4-H horse and pony member that has the highest accumulative point total during the fair for all classes shown, with any one horseone rider combination. The 4-H member must show in Western, English and contesting classes. The 4-H member must have a minimum of 30 Tippecanoe County horse and pony club points accumulated by the July club meeting, as well as have met the three meeting requirement for meetings or clinics. In case of a tie, the winner will be determined by the rider with the highest point average based on the points divided by the number of classes entered. Add Sportsmanship Award Awarded to the 4-H member who best displays the following qualities: Sportsmanship, positive attitude, encouraging, respectful, and represents the club in a positive manner. The 4-H horse and pony board will nominate this award recipeent and give out this award at the annual awards banquet. The 4-H member must have completed the three meeting minimum to be eligible. #14 Show bill for county fair must be turned in to the club leader by the June 4-H meet ing. Very minor changes may be made to this show bill prior to the July club meeting. This will allow the board to more accurately know if anyone will participate in each one of the classes listed on the show bill and prevent the purchase of trophies for classes that no one participates in. NEW FROM STATE A comprehensive health management certificate will be required of all horse and pony competitors and their animals. A letter detailing these requirements will be mailed out to members and copy of the certificate may be found on the Indiana 4- H website or at the Tippecanoe County Extension office. This certificate must be kept on hand by each competitor at every Horse & Pony event, failure to do so will result in ineli gibility from future Indiana 4-H Horse & Pony events.

14 PAGE 14 TIPPECANOE TABLOID Junior Leader Jabber Junior Leaders Needed! T he only thing missing is U! If you are currently in grade 7 or above, you are eligible to be a part of Junior Leaders! If you would like to be a part of Junior Leaders we invite you to our next meeting which will take place in November A mailing with more information is to follow. If you know of anyone who would enjoy this fun group, bring them along! The Junior Leader Officers are now planning the Junior Leader Program. We are excited about what is already taking place and we hope that this year will challenge you to develop your leadership skills so that you can be better leaders. The Junior Leader Program has three purposes: To encourage the development of leadership To provide assistance to the local 4-H clubs To assist in the leadership of the county 4-H activities and program 4-H Exhibit Association Youth Representatives T he Tippecanoe County 4-H Exhibit Association has selected Kristin Dill, Alec Ward and Molly Daniels to serve as Youth Representatives on the board for They will each serve one two-year term, and be voting members of the 4-H Exhibit Association. Congratulations go out to these three young leaders, who will help provide direction for the future of the Tippecanoe County 4-H Program! The board is accepting applications for one remaining open Youth Representative seat. All 4-H members who will be enrolled in their 8th, 9th, or 10th year of 4-H in 2015 are invited to apply. The board meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday of most months. Applications are available at the Extension Office or on the county 4-H website ( and are due to the Extension Office by 11/11/14.
