Just take a look at 4-H today. In 4-H, kids find their true passions, gain confidence, and give back to the community. Celebrate 4-H s efforts in helping today s kids become tomorrow s leaders. Nebraska 4-H Month is held during the entire month of February. This year s theme is Make a Lasting Impact. CLOVER KID MEETING In this issue: *Nebraska 4-H Month *Clover Kid Meeting *Teen Supremes *Wayne County Air Gun Invitational *Enrollment Reminders *Big Red Road Show *Wreath Workshop *Beef News *4-H Consumer Challenge Event *Attention High School Seniors *Governor s Ag Excellence Awards * 2015 Poultry Calendar Photography Contest *Special Garden Project *Upcoming Events The first meeting for Clover Kids is February 1, 9:00-10:15 a.m. at the Wayne County Courthouse. Youth ages 5-7 by January 1, 2014 are eligible. They will learn about 4-H and participate in activities exploring color and begin to construct a color wheel they can take home and add items to. This will be an exhibit that they can bring to the fair in July. Cost is $4.00 which includes a $2 insurance fee to enroll in 4-H and $2 for the activity. A Clover Kid 4-H Enrollment Form will need to be filled out and signed by a parent/guardian. Enrollment Forms are available online at wayne.unl.edu and at the Extension Office. They will also be available at the meeting. Contact the Extension Office by 5 p.m., January 28 to register so we have enough supplies. The next meeting will be on March 8 and they will be making No Sew Pillows. TEEN SUPREMES The Teen Supremes will meet Feb.1, following the Clover Kid meeting (approximately 10:15-11:00 a.m.) at the Wayne County Courthouse. WAYNE COUNTY AIR GUN INVITATIONAL The Sharp Shooters 4-H Club will host the competition at the Carroll Auditorium on February 2, Doors open at 9:00 a.m. and the first relay will begin at 10:00 a.m. A concession stand will be on site. This would be a great opportunity for 4-Hers interested in shooting sports to see what 4-H Shooting Sports is all about. Contact Darin Greunke at or dgshoots4fun@hotmail.com for more information.

2 ENROLLMENT REMINDERS BEEF NEWS 4-H enrollments for ALL members and leaders are DUE to the Extension Office by 5:00 p.m., Feb. 3. The 2014 Pick Your Project can be accessed online at by choosing the 4-H Enrollment Information link on the home page. Please make sure to review/correct the information on the re-enrollment forms and have a parent or guardian complete the consent section & sign the form. Remember to include $2.00/4-Her to renew the 4-H Accident Insurance and $5.00/family to help cover the County Fair Food Stand pie expenses. 4-Hers who have returned their enrollments will continue to receive mailings. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension is asking new volunteers to fill out the Youth Protection 4-H Volunteer Screening form. The database is updated every 4 years on a district rotation. On February 1, 2014, the University of Nebraska- Lincoln will host its annual Big Red Road Show at Midtown Cinema in Omaha. Husker Cinema is designed to share UNL's academic and student life possibilities for prospective students and the Omaha community. Explore more than 25 interactive booths showcasing Nebraska's opportunities through academic excellence, and student life by interacting with our faculty, staff and current students. Each of the 5 theatres will feature entertainment unique to UNL, Omaha schools and community organizations. With so many ways to experience life as a Husker and major prize drawings, this will be the most exciting Big Red Road Show yet! Check out for more information. 4-H WREATH WORKSHOP A Wreath Workshop is scheduled for March 8, 10:30 a.m. Noon at the Wayne County Courthouse. Cost is $5 for provided materials. You will need to bring ribbon and embellishments. See the enclosed flyer for more details. Registration & payment due to the Extension Office by 5 p.m., February 21. * All 4-H Market Beef must be weighed and tagged. Plan to attend the Wayne County Weigh-in on March 2, 1:00-2:30 p.m. at the Wayne Veterinary Clinic. * DNA samples must be collected on animals exhibited at Ak-Sar-Ben and State Fair. The State Fair is also requiring a negative BVD test be stated on the Certificate of Inspection. All animals weighed and tagged are eligible for the Norfolk Beef Expo Show and Sale. * The charge for each DNA sample is $6.00, ear tags are $1.00 each and all must be paid for at weigh-in. * Please be prepared to complete all paperwork. You will need to know which animals are home raised, county raised, and those returning from the 2013 County Fair. * In case of inclement weather listen to KTCH FM 104.9/AM 1590 or US FM. The snow date is March 9, same location and time. * Please call the office before 5 p.m. on Friday, February 28 if you cannot attend! Market Beef not weighed at this time are ineligible for the County Rate-of-Gain Contest, but may weigh at an out of county location. Contact the Extension Office for dates and times. Ear tags must be picked up at the Extension Office prior to any out of county weigh-in. * Nebraska Cattlemen s Classic Livestock Judging Contest is scheduled for February 22 in Kearney. Check for information. Pre-registration due by Feb H CONSUMER CHALLENGE EVENT Mark your calendars for March 22, 10:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. and plan to participate in the Consumer Challenge Event at the Sunset Plaza, Norfolk. Please contact the Extension Office by 5:00 p.m., March 19 to enter. See the enclosed flyer for more information. The state contest is scheduled for June 30-July 1 in Lincoln. 2

3 ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS Scholarship guidelines and applications are available online at county4h under the Senior Scholarship Heading. The Monsanto Company recently announced the launch of America s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders, a $1500 college scholarship for students pursuing degrees in agriculture-related fields. Visit and for more information. You do not have to be a FFA member to apply. Applications are due by February 1. Scholarships are available for 4-Hers planning to attend the University of Nebraska. Choose the Nebraska 4-H Foundation Scholarship link from the list. Applications are accepted until March 3. The Wayne County 4-H Council will award up to five $200 scholarships to High School Seniors enrolled in the Wayne County 4-H program who meet the qualifications. Choose 4-H Council Senior Scholarship Application link from the list. Recipients will be selected by a scholarship committee. Applications are accepted until March 14. Choose the Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards (NACEB) link for information about a $1000 scholarship to UNL for an incoming freshmen or transfer student. Applications are accepted until March 15. Seniors who received a 27 or higher on their ACT and are interested in a major at CASNR (College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, contact the Extension Office to learn more about a scholarship opportunity POULTRY CALENDAR PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is sponsoring a photography contest. The contest is open to all current Nebraska 4-H and FFA members. Photos must be taken by the contestant and contain poultry. All entries must be postmarked or ed by midnight, June 30, 2014, and accompanied by any entry form. Entry forms are available at avian/contest and at the Extension Office. SPECIAL GARDEN PROJECT This year s special garden project is the Love-Lies-Bleeding Amaranth. They are described as a heirloom flower that has many uses. The brilliant red seed heads hang down from upright plants. The flowers are long lasting and are great in arrangements either as fresh cut or dried flowers. When allowed to mature, the seeds from the plant can be eaten. 4-Hers enrolled in the project will receive a packet of seeds; a newsletter about planting & growing flowers; and are eligible to enter these unique flowers at the County and State Fair. Contact the Extension Office by April 1 if you would like to participate. Recognition is in the form of $500 checks issued to the club s treasury to be used as described in the award application form completed by the club. Applications are available on-line at Any club that hasn't received a Governor s Agricultural Excellence Award for the past two consecutive years is eligible to apply. It s up to you to decide and Office by 5 p.m., Feb. 21. purchase your ribbon and embellishments. These can become expensive so shop wisely! All ribbon and burlaps go on sale every other week at 50% off at Hobby Lobby. Other craft stores may also carry these items. Bring the mesh/burlap needed and anything you would like to accent with to the workshop. We encourage you to design your wreath so it can be displayed in your house for several months.think seasonal not specific holidays. Examples are shown below. Mesh Wreaths are created out of (1) 21 inch wide/30 feet Mesh Ribbon. Ribbon can be purchased from numerous craft stores. Prices run $9.99-$14.99 at Hobby Lobby. Variegated and sparkly colors are more expensive Burlap Wreaths are created out of (6) 6 inch/5 yard spools of Burlap. You can choose your color combination. Prices run about $5.99/spool at Hobby Lobby.

8 H CONSUMER CHALLENGE SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. SUNSET PLAZA MALL in NORFOLK, NEBRASKA Apply what you have learned from various 4-H projects to a challenge testing your consumerism skills. Youth between the ages of 8 and 18 will be challenged in teams consisting of two individuals. There will be two age divisions: 8-11 year olds and year olds. Youth will be paired on the day of the event or inform staff of their teammate when registering. Each team can take as much time as they wish to complete the investigation of each challenge, but must be done by 11:30 a.m. Teams will not be purchasing the items they investigate. Team members must shop as a team. 10:00 a.m. Registration (Look for 4-H signs located in a vacant store or in the center of the mall.) 10:15 a.m. Team orientation 10:30 a.m. Team investigation 11:30 a.m. Report back for tabulations and processing 12:15 p.m. Challenges reviewed and participant certificates distributed Challenges will be related to projects such as: home environment, consumer management, food and nutrition, and human development. This event is organized by the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension as part of the 4-H Youth Development Program.
