ART OF REMEMBRANCE Article by Hannah Nathan As part of the 100 year commemorations of World War 1, Lakes High School Deputy Head Boy Leroy Nurkka entered in the Art of Remembrance multimedia competition, hosted by the Rotorua Museum. The competition was open to year 9-13 students from Rotorua, calling them to engage in WW1 centenary commemorations. Leroy painted a canvas of late Rotorua war nurse, Christabel MacFarlane, which will be judged along with other entrants over the following weeks, then later displayed in a public exhibition during the Anzac period. His painting highlights her connections to Rotorua through Mokoia Island, her British War Medal and Victory Medal achievements and the hospital boat on which she served on; SS Mareno. The Red Cross features in the painting, bordered by poppies to show respect to MacFarlane s contribution to nursing and service to our country. The first prize for the Art of Remembrance is a $10,000 scholarship, generously donated by Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust. We wish Leroy all the best.

NEWS & EVENTS WINTER MENUS
DEPARTMENT NEWS ART NEWS The first Year 9 rotation is coming to an end and students are working on their final projects using Pacific Designs as inspiration. The new rotation begins in week one, term two, and students are able to buy their items in town in the holidays. They will need an A3 sketchbook, a 3B pencil, an eraser, a sharpener, an ink pen, and a set of watercolour pencils. All other materials will be provided for them. ARTWORK BY Joel Roper Yr, 10 The Year 10 Art students are reaching the halfway point of their course, and have developed new skills and techniques using dry/wet media, and are moving into studying artist models and learning Photoshop. Next term we will be exploring printmaking and mixed media, and more painting! Please make sure your son/daughter has all the equipment on the stationery list (on Google classroom) so they can make the most of the rest of the course. Any questions, carlans@rotorualakes.school.nz.
Senior Art students should make use of the holidays to extend their ideas and research, and practice techniques and use of media. They should also review exemplars on NZQA and read about level of achievement, and take note of resources put on Pinterest, and Google Classroom, for them to follow interesting links to websites that could help inspire them. It is crucial that students enter term two with all tasks and work completed and up to date, ready to tackle the next stage in the development of their portfolios for the year. Please contact your son/daughters' teachers if you have any concerns or queries about their progress. LIBRARY BOOK OF THE MONTH House Rules by Jodi Picoult Senior Fiction Can a guilty face betray an innocent heart. Jacob Hunt is a teenage boy with Asperger s syndrome. He s hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, and like many kids with AS, Jacob has a special focus on one subject in his case, forensic analysis. He s always showing up at crime scenes, thanks to the police scanner he keeps in his room, and telling the cops what they need to do. and he s usually right. But then his town is rocked by a terrible murder and, for a change, the police come to Jacob with questions. All of the hallmark behaviors of Asperger s not looking someone in the eye, stimulatory tics and twitches, flat affect can look a lot like guilt to law enforcement personnel. Suddenly, Jacob and his family, who only want to fit in, feel the spotlight shining directly on them. For his mother, Emma, it s a brutal reminder of the intolerance and misunderstanding that always threaten her family. For his brother, Theo, it s another indication of why nothing is normal because of Jacob. And over this small family the soul-searing question looms: Did Jacob commit murder? Emotionally powerful from beginning to end, House Rules looks at what it means to be different in our society, how autism affects a family, and how our legal system works well for people who communicate a certain way and fails those who don t. 6 SPORTS EQUESTRIAN INTER SCHOOL GAMBLERS STAKES By Emma Jackson On Tuesday the 27th of March, Rotorua Lakes High School sent a team of 3 riders to compete at the North Island Inter School Gamblers stakes. This event required riders to complete both a Show Jumping and a Cross Country course, collecting points based on the heights of jumps they completed. Briley Jones (year 10), Emma Jackson (year 13), and team captain Bella Uhl (year 13) all made the journey over to Edgecumb to compete. It was a successful day all round, with Briley compelling her first Gamblers Stakes, Emma placing in the top 20 on a new horse, and Bella placing second in the Senior age group on one of her two horses. The day was filled with fun and encouragement, creating a supportive atmosphere that makes us eagerly await the next event on Wednesday the 11th of April. Good work Lakes High! DUKE OF EDINBURGH PARTICIPANTS Please be sure to continue working on your activities and getting your supervisors to sign off weekly. Plan out your journeys and schedule them in for the rest of the year, particularly Gold candidates, to be sure you don't clash with your exams and academic priorities later in the year. Once you have completed all the requirements, bring in your books or notify Mrs. CR via the online record book, to complete the award level you are working on. Inneke Smets, our new Science teacher, is helping out with the Award here at school, and is starting out by setting up a Facebook Group page for our Award Unit at RLHS. Students will be able to share their photos of their activities and journeys to the group, which will be a great way to improve our connectedness as a unit. Look forward to that early next term!
Lavacamp will be proceeding in the first week of the holidays, and here's hoping the candidates have an awesome week down at Ruapehu ticking of various trainings and adventurous journeys, at all levels! Our thanks to all the parents helping out with supervision and transport, and of course, Gerry Purcell, who continues to tirelessly assist (unpaid) our students in gaining their awards. New Silver candidates: If you are not yet 14 years of age and 9 months, and you would like to sign up using the online record book, the head office has said that they are willing to manually load you on so you can begin your activites, and log them. Please Jess at info@dofehillary.org.nz, with your son/daughter's names and school name (award unit), and make payment via internet banking to: Bank Account: The Duke of Edinburgh s Hillary Award ANZ Bank: Please use your surname as the Main Reference I will then confirm their registration via the ORB. Be sure to tick "electronic permission form" and get your confirmation done promptly, then they are good to go! Candidates will have to wait until they are 16 however to begin their Gold award, but can still get started on the trainings and journeys.
