2 SADD CONFERENCE Emma Jackson, Year 13, really stood out at this year s SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) Conference in Auckland. Emma won Outstanding Contribution for a delegate who was chosen for their exceptional leadership, team work, ideas, communication, dedication and overall potential to succeed (both within SADD and the wider world). Emma s Team also won The Team Award for the overall challenge - a task they worked on for all 3 days at the conference. Great achievements for a talented student. Well done Emma! PPTA PAID UNION MEETING On Wednesday 23 May classes will finish at so teachers can attend a Post Primary Teachers Association Union Meeting (under the provisions of section 26 of the Employment Relations Act 2000). Supervision will be provided in the Auditorium for any bus, or other students who cannot get home at this time. Our apologies for any inconvenience. ASSESSMENTS The following assessments have been set down to take place within the next two weeks. There may be times where, due to unforeseen circumstances, changes will need to occur. 3 NEWS & EVENTS YEAR 10 CAMP In the last week of Term 1, 75 excited Year 10 students left school for Okataina camp. This annual camp is aimed at encouraging students to expand their social circles, connect with the history of the area, challenge themselves with a variety of activities and gain the enjoyment that comes from education outside the classroom. The camp began with a rocky start of a power cut. Thankfully the power returned and students enjoyed 3 days of fun filled activities. It was rewarding seeing students rise to the challenges and be helpful members throughout the 3 days. "Learning the Haka was my favourite part." "I enjoyed the different activities we got to do" Students had this to say about camp: "Camp was an enjoyable, different and fun experience. Socially we got to meet people we had not worked with before. We enjoyed making new friends and coming together during this time" Special thanks to the Okataina camp and the staff; Mr Godfrey, Ms Kelly, Ms Barnett, Miss Beijeman, Ms Hodge, Matua Tau and our parent helpers; Mr Lawson. Mrs Eggleston and Mr Bruns

GENERAL ACTIVITIY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurses, and student diaries, and to support cocurricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for socalled free education but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras. Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation. CHARTER BUS All Charter Bus students must have purchased their bus passes by Friday 11 May A Term pass costs $ A 10 ride pass costs $30.00 Payable at Student Reception

6 DEPARTMENT NEWS SOCIAL STUDIES TRIP Mrs Hodge's Social Studies classes 9M1 and 9S3 were able to visit the Rotorua Lakes Council recently as part of their unit on Government and Leadership. Students were able to sit in the Council Chambers and the governance structure of RLC was explained to them. In conjunction with the community-wide consultation process, students were also given the opportunity to contribute their thoughts on future council spending around areas such as Kuirau Park, Lakefront, Museum etc. Everyone was very impressed and felt important that their views were going to be added future planning discussions. A good visit all around.

8 SPORTS INTERSCHOOL GYMKHANA SUCCESS It was the coldest day of the year, top temperature in Reporoa was 5 degrees but the RLHS team did fantastic job! There were several events run at different class heights which made a very busy and long day. Tabby Taylor achieved a 2nd and 3rd placing. Emma Herbert achieved success with two 1sts, a 2nd and 3rd. Bella Uhl achieved a 1st placing. These points combined put the RLHS team in 3rd place overall which was a great result as the competition was tough. Congratulations Tabby Taylor and Emma Herbert, this was their first time competing at school level and they both did so well. Briley Jones and Emma Jackson received no individual placings but were awesome and enthusiastic members of the team! Well done to the team great results. LAVA CAMP Congratulations to the students who had a very successful week on Mount Ruapehu, at Lavacamp, with Gerry Purcell, our outside provider for the award. They completed a variety of trainings, and practice and qualifying journeys while on the mountain, and can be very proud of their efforts in the outdoors, particularly in challenging alpine conditions. 13 Tena Koutou Katoa My name is Toni Waaka and I work for Te Taumata O Ngāti Whakaue Iho Ake Trust. I will be co-ordinating the OneSight Vision Clinic being held from Monday 28 th May to Friday 01 st Jun You may recall that in 2016 One-Sight visited Rotorua and held a free week long eye clinic. During that time hundreds of Rotorua students were tested and those who needed glasses received them for free a few weeks laterso that Students can get the most from the Clinic, here is some information 1. STUDENTS from Primary School (5 years) to High School (17 years) 2. We only have about 3 weeks to get as many Students booked so it would be awesome if you could please send the information back as soon as possible 3. ALL Students MUST HAVE the Parental Permission & Questionaire form that has been filled in correctly and more importantly SIGNED in the section that says: Parent / Guardian Consent 4. The information on the sheet is registered on the OneSight Clinic database by 2 of their administration team and it is important Clinic run smoother when the forms are sorted and the technicians can just pick up the form and take our tamariki for their assessment 5. Once we receive the forms (via scan, , or at our office) we will book the time(s) for classes / school(s) and send confirmation we will endeavour to accommodate all Students, classes and schools as best as we can and would appreciate your support if we need to be flexible as and when required 6. You will need to arrange transport to and from the venue. For schools with buses, vans and cars you will be able to utilise the car park through the main hospital entrance (off Arawa Street) while you are attending the Clinic 7. The initial assessment only takes a few minutes if a further assessment is required this may take a bit longer 8. The glasses will be sent to our Te Taumata office and will be dispersed to the Schools by our Clinic Co-ordinator. Please be aware that it can take 4 6 weeks after the Clinic for the glasses to be sent from Australia For all booking and enquiries, please contact me on my details listed below: Hinematioro (Toni) Waaka Phone: toni@taumata.org.nz We hope you can support this amazing kaupapa and help our rangatahi, tamariki, mokopuna to be able to get the help that they need. In doing so, we assist them to progress in their education and future pathway in life. Ngā mihi maioha Hinematioro (Toni) Waaka
