Program Opportunity For Girls ASME Chicago Scholarship 6 ASME New Face of Engineering - College 6 Future ME Career Development Video Series 8 Member Savvy Advanced Manufacturing Design Forum Message from the Chair David Klimas, P.E., ASME Chicago Section Chair It has been a busy couple of months as we have been coordinating many events and executing our plan to tie the Section Membership closer to the Student Sections of our universities in the area. This includes reaching out to the Illinois Institute of Technology, Northwestern, University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC), Valparaiso University and Purdue Calumet, to name a few. I encourage all students to join their ASME Student Sections and get active. It is great way to get involved with the community and network with professionals. It could even be an in to potential employment in the future. I know all companies look for candidates that our leaders and active in their profession. What a perfect way to showcase your talents. Now is the time to come out and participate. It was great to see so many students at our Networking Event on April 4 th. It was a blast playing whirly ball. See the event highlights on page 4. Some of the recent events we have held include a variety of presentations from "Utilizing the Latest Technology in Design", "Understanding Drywall Manufacturing" and reviewing the design of the first "Intrinsically Safe Nuclear Reactor". Talk about some interesting topics and speakers. The technology discussion focused on utilizing geographical information systems technology and laser scanning in design to help develop better and more accurate construction plans. The presentation on nuclear reactor design was awesome. It was interesting to see how the technology was highlighted in the April issue of ME Magazine. The talk on drywall design was excellent and highlights the strong relationship the section has with the UIC Student Section. This presentation was held at the UIC Engineering Lab and many students were in attendance. In February, we helped coordinate the Engineer s Week Activities in Chicago as Bill Nye, the Science Guy received the 2014 Washington Award. It was nice to see everyone there including the Whitney Young Robotics Team, who were there as our guests. It was held at the Palmer House and was the pinnacle event for Engineering Week activities. We also have some upcoming events that I think will be great. We have a Job Fair planned for May 17 th. Also, a seminar is planned on utilizing Solid Works for doing Finite Element Analysis. I hope to see you at our 2015 Planning Meeting on June 7 th. This is a great event to help guide the section and coordinate activities early. I hope to see you there!!! Have a great summer. 2 Local Section News ASME CHICAGO SUPPORTS FIRST ROBOTICS TEAMS! For those of you who are not familiar with the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) it is a "sports like", team based competition, for High School Students. It involves a major effort by teams of approximately 25 students to design, construct and operate a robot to which executes proscribed actions in an arena. The rules are designed to promote teamwork within and across teams. Professional mentors are able to contribute to teams by teaching and encouraging the students. All design, construction, promotion and operation effort on the robots is carried out by the students. This year we supported 4 different teams in various ways: Whitney Young Magnet High School, team #4302 "Robophins". We were involved with this team in providing mentoring and financial support. We also were able to invite 5 students and their faculty advisor from the Whitney Young team to the Chicagoland Engineering Week awards banquet which featured Bill Nye as the keynote speaker. Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy High School, team #2151 "Monty Pythons". This year as in the past our Vice Chair, Antigone Sharris, was very active in mentoring this team in conjunction with Triton Triton College's support of this team. Lane Tech College Prep High School, team #4645 "X-Machina". Last year we worked with the UIC ASME Student Section to support this team both by mentoring and in contribution financial support. This year the Lane Tech team felt they were well supported and suggested we become involved with the Northside and Whitney Young teams. Nevertheless we continued to follow and connect with the Lane Tech team. Northside College Prep, team #4787 "Axiom". In addition to providing mentoring and financial support to this team, we provided a session on Technical Drawing and Print Reading to the team. Also of note is that like last year, the UIC ASME Student Section provided mentoring for to Lane Tech, Whitney Young and Northside teams. And, the Northwestern ASME Student Section provided a robot "design review" to Chicago area FRC teams. We are proud of all the teams involved and in particular, those 4 we more directly supported. The teams each came up with robots that met their design goals and competed vigorously against 56 total teams in the regional competition held at the UIC Pavilion near downtown Chicago. Lane Tech's team was able to advance to the National competition in St Louis (Apr 23-26) by winning the "FIRST Dean's List Finalist #1 award". At you can watch the competition live, and learn more about FRC in general. Plans are to continue supporting these FRC teams next year. In doing that we hope to get involved early via providing some technical seminars to the teams, which will help them get going quickly once the "Build Season" starts in Jan Some topics which might be covered: Mechanical CAD, Strength of Materials, Technical Drawing and Print Reading, Springs, Motor basics, Magnetics, Pneumatics etc. Let us know if you're interested in getting involved. ASME Chicago Supports FRC Team Ed Feldy, ASME Secretary provides some funding and mentoring to the Northside College Prep Robotic Team. ASME Section News 2

3 FRC Regional Competition at University of Illinois Chicago A picture is worth a 1,000 wordsthe FRC is an event like no other. It s a Super-Bowl for engineers!!! WHIRLY BALL NETWORKING EVENT! On April 4th we held a Whirly-ball Networking Event. It was a huge success as a variety of teams competed for bragging rights. We had students from University of Illinois and Northwestern in attendance as well as many ASME Chicago Section members and perspective members. Fun was had by all. We learned a little about ASME WorkSmart. See page 6 of this Newsletter for further details on a great benefit of ASME membership. As we were heading out after the day s event I heard numerous folks ask when we were going to do this again. I challenge representatives from all area schools, as well as membership to keep a look out for our next fun and exciting Networking event. Please visit our web-site at ASME Section News 3
