OFFICERS MEETING August 11, 4:30 PM ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING August 16, 5:30 PM The Fall Organizational Meeting for Del Rio AND Comstock is scheduled for Tuesday, August 16 at 5:30 PM and will be held at the Dink Wardlaw meeting room. Project leaders will explain the projects available for the year and elections for the 4-H Sweetheart, Friend of 4-H and Adult Volunteer of the Year will be held. Everyone registered in the 4-H program should attend. For the latest club and project information, don t forget to update your 4-H Connect account online! 4-H Officers will meet on Thursday, August 11 at 4:30 PM at the Dink Wardlaw meeting room. They will review parliamentary procedure and the agenda for the August 16th meeting. If you were elected as an officer for the year at the Spring meeting, you should plan to attend the officer meeting or talk with Christina Nass or Houston Dobbins. You can update your information on your 4-H Connect account anytime! All you need is your address and password. Simply select the edit button to make changes or additions to information for your family or individual members. It is important to keep your information current in order to keep receiving the s we send concerning upcoming events. Lamb & Goat Project Information State Tag Orders This is the time of year to order state ear tags for market lambs and market goats. If you plan to enter an animal at any out-of-town major livestock show (Kerrville, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston, Austin), they must be tagged with a 2017 Texas Lamb and Goat Validation Program tag at validation time. Validation for ALL lambs and goats is scheduled for October 14 & 15. Lamb/Goat projects should be purchased and on feed prior to validation. If you are ONLY planning to show lambs or goats at the Val Verde County Livestock Show, you do NOT need to order state tags. These animals will only be tagged with a county tag on validation day. The county tags do not need to be pre-ordered. Cost for the State tags will be $10 each. You are responsible for paying (at validation time) for the number of tags you order. To order State tags, please call the Extension office ( ), with the number you need, no later than August 12th. Lamb & Goat Validation Dates Validation for market lambs and market goats will be held both days in Del Rio at the Del Rio 4-H Barn. Friday, October 14-3:00-6:00 PM Saturday, October 15-8:00 AM- 11:00 AM All market lambs and market goats that are to be shown in the Val Verde County Livestock Show must be present on one of these validation dates to be eligible to show in January. County entry cards will be completed during validation. Please bring a check or cash to pay for your county entries and tag fees. County ear tags per animal are $5, State ear tags per animal are $10. In addition, County entries are $5 per animal entered. This entry free is separate from the tag fee. Each exhibitor must tag and show a minimum of 2 large market animals (i.e. lamb, goat, pig) in any combination and can show a maximum of 4 of each species. You may tag and feed as many animals as you wish. Swine validation will be held in November. Date to be announced. Summer 2016 Page 2

Thanks to all the volunteer leaders and coaches who assisted with and attended Round-Up. We LOVE our volunteers!!!!! Food & Nutrition Project Organizational Meeting August 23, 4:00 PM The 4-H Food & Nutrition Project will hold their organizational meeting on Tuesday, August 23 at 4:00 PM in the Dink Wardlaw meeting room. If you plan to participate in this project, please attend this important meeting for youth and parents. Dates for the food show will be discussed and small project groups (& meeting times) will be organized. The culmination of the project is the County Food Show so now is the time to search for the perfect recipe. Remember to keep it healthy! We are always in need of project leaders. If you would like to lead one of the Food & Nutrition groups you do NOT have to have a child participating. Being an adult 4-H volunteer is a rewarding experience, which pays dividends in the development of the youth of our community. Teen leaders in the Food project have a great opportunity to mentor young, eager 4-Hers. Remember, LEADERSHIP is a big focus of the 4-H program. Serving as a teen leader is also important when filling out a Recordbook or Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship application. Don t wait to think about this at the end of your 4-H career. Junior Leaders (junior high age) assist adult leaders with a group. Teen leaders (high school age) are in charge of their own group under the supervision of an adult. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer leader junior, teen or adult, contact Christina Nass at the Extension office, or Food Project Coordinator, Michelle Ballard, Thanks to Michelle Ballard and all her group leaders for the great work they do with our Food and Nutrition members. Not only do they plan exciting lessons and delicious recipes they take their time to grocery shop and organize field trips. Don t forget to enroll for the year on 4-H Connect! 4 Val Verde County Dog Show Held May 14th The 4H Dog Project held their County Show on Saturday, May 16, Leaders for the project were Karen Hildreth, Tracy Hildreth, Allison Mercier, Ashley Mercier, and David Mercier. Darby and Toby are this year s corecipients of the Guillermo Canseco Memorial Scholarship. The Canseco family would like to wish them both well in all their future endeavors. The Canseco Scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving high school aged Val Verde 4 H member. They must submit an applica on to the Canseco family who then selects the recipient of the $1,000 scholarship. Applicants must be in 9th 12th grade. If you would like to apply for next year s scholarship, come by the office and pick up an applica on. You can also call to request an applica on and we will it to you. During Texas 4 H Round Up both Darby and Toby were also presented with scholarships through the 4 H Opportuni es Scholarship program. Darby Ballard received the Houston Stock Show Scholarship. She along with 69 other 4 Hers received this scholarship of $18,000. Toby was also awarded a scholarship through the 4 H Opportuni es scholarship program. His sponsor was the Anderson Bean Boot Company. We are so proud of these two individuals who are des ned for great things! Way to go!!! Summer 2016 Page 4

GENERAL JAIME QUINONES HORSE COMPETITION Frances Quinones and the Quinones family, in memory of General Jaime Quinones, who was an excellent horseman, desired to support the 4 H Horse program and its members. As a result, the Quinones compe on was born. The purpose of this event is to encourage youngsters to develop horsemanship skills and strive for excellence. Last year s winner was Stockton Taylor. Mark your calendar for this year s compe on, which will be held on October 18th at the 4 H Horse Arena. Participate In More Than One 4-H Project When Registering On 4-H Connect 4-H projects offer so many opportunities and a variety of experiences. You might also consider that one of the requirements for the Gold Star Award is that a member be actively involved in at least three projects. Don t Forget to Mark Your Calendars for the 2017 Val Verde County Livestock Show January 5-7, 2017 Raising Rabbits for the Livestock Show? The Rabbit project begins in the Fall. The mee ng will be held at the Dink Wardlaw mee ng room located at 300 E. 17th Street. This will be a mee ng to set up new classes. Shooters AND Parents need to be present so that rules and plans for this project can be discussed. Anyone interested in joining the project or becoming a coach are encouraged to a end. This project is popular and there are limited spaces available, so sign up at the mee ng is important. There will be a cut off date to enroll in this year s project and it will be announced at the mee ng.
