It is based on the idea that 4-H helps youth thrive in community, work, and life. We will be looking into this model for potential use in Tennessee. Below is the overview of the model. For the past few newsletters I have been introducing several components of the model. You may want to go back and review those front page articles as your look at the overall model. 2 Page 2 HEALTHY LIVING SUMMIT Shelby Brawner, Extension Assistant/Grant Manager Tennessee 4-H had 53 individuals in attendance at the National 4-H Healthy Living Summit in Chevy Chase, Maryland February 16 - February 19, These individuals were selected through an application process. The Healthy Living Summit involves high school students from around the country gathering at the National 4-H Center to assist them in the development of knowledge and skills to address today's issues including nutrition education, physical fitness, wellness, and emotional well-being. Students are trained to create action plans to implement in their communities and teach other youth about what they have learned. The structure of the summit maximizes the amount of hands-on learning experiences and translates that learning to direct outcomes.

3 Page 3 BILLS & RESOLUTION FOR STATE 4-H CONGRESS Daniel Sarver, Extension Specialist The bills and resolution to be used in the Know Your Government program at State 4-H Congress have been posted to the website. They can be found at The Know Your Government program is always one of the highlights of State 4-H Congress. Delegates will have the opportunity to state their views, and try to influence their peers as they actually vote on the bills and resolution. There are resources to help delegates prepare for this mock legislative session. There is also a link allowing you to print the bills from the website. Special thanks go to the Eastern Region and Western Region offices for their efforts in developing the bills and resolution.

8 Page 8 G.L Herrington Agricultural Scholarship Application Carmen G. Burgos, Extension Specialist The G.L. Herrington Agricultural Scholarship is open to any incoming freshman studying in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville next fall. The Herrington Scholarship is a $1,000 award. To apply, please go to our website page where forms and materials are located: and scroll down to Scholarships where you will find several document to assist you with using the online program for scholarship applications. Reminder: This process is different from the paper process. Applicants need to call their agent(s) and ask when the application is due for the county review. G.L Herrington applications are to be submitted online on or before March 1, G.L Harrington applications will not be accepted after that date. Follow all instruction in the guide. An application without a proper transcript (with students name on it) will not be considered for judging. In addition to the G.L Harrington Scholarship, applicants can also apply for other scholarships at this time. If you have questions, please send an to cburgos@utk.edu.

9 Page 9 JUANITA H. FASOLA FOUNDATION, INC. MINI-GRANTS AVAILABLE Ryan Hensley, Executive Director, TN 4-H Foundation The Juanita H. Fasola Foundation has announced the availability of mini-grants for the purpose funding educational programs for youth and young adults in basic life skills and home economics. The Fasola Foundation funds projects focusing on consumer education and nutrition; cookery; clothing; sewing; textiles; parental education and childcare; hygiene; health care management; household economics and management; household equipment; house cleaning; and housing. The Foundation is also interested in funding projects, which offer educational training and opportunities for the learning disabled, including but not limited to dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, speech auditory disorders, and/or educational rehabilitation. Ms. Fasola, a former Extension worker, was a strong supporter of the Tennessee 4-H program. If you are interested in applying for a mini-grant, an application can be found HERE or in the Resources section of the Tennessee 4-H Foundation website. If you have questions, please contact Ryan Hensley at Tn4H@utk.edu or for more information. The 4-H Foundation merely collects and submits grant applications and has no influence on the selection process. Successful applicants will be announced in 4-H Ideas when the 4-H Foundation is notified what, if any, applications were selected. There is no maximum or minimum grant level; however most grants from the Fasola Foundation are funded at $10,000 or less. Grant applications will be accepted until Tuesday, February 27.
