Financial Education is a top rated issue for Texas AgriLife Extension in Lubbock County. In response to this issue, the following programming was conducted: This edition s featured photo is by Melanie Braune, member of the Frenship 4-H Club. Her photo was entered in the State 4-H Photography contest in the Architectural Elements category.!a presentation on Consumer Fraud was presented to 15 members of the Parkinson s Association.! An exhibit on Rural Entrepreneurship was set up and staffed with volunteers at the South Plains Fair, September 24 - Oct. 2 with approximately 75,000 attending.! Regular articles on current legislation affecting credit card use and it s effect on consumers are included in the Family Network Newsletter. 2 Extension at a Glance - 3rd Quarter 2010 Page 2 Urban and Agricultural Water Conservation and Quality 3 rd Water Wise Garden Tour Conducted by Lubbock Master Gardeners Brant Baugh, Extension Agent - Integrated Pest Management On Saturday, July 24, Lubbock Master Gardeners conducted its 3 rd Waterwise Garden Tour of 5 home landscapes that were all developed by Master Gardeners. A total of 231 Lubbock County residents attended this tour to learn more about waterwise and EarthKind plant selections, rainwater harvesting, and other waterconserving practices. Overall attendance for the 3 tours conducted from exceeded 900 participants. Ag Awareness Efforts at the South Plains Fair Ronda Alexander, County Extension Agent - 4-H and Youth Lubbock County 4-H Clubs had another successful year in the operation of the Children s 4-H Barnyard at the South Plains Fair. An estimated 75,000 South Plains residents viewed the exhibits in the Barnyard. For many area children, this is their first opportunity to see a farm animal up close. In addition to 40 large animals and approximately 120 poultry on display, other Ag Awareness efforts included live milking demonstrations at the Southwest Dairy Producers mobile dairy classroom, and display of the Texas Farm Bureau mobile ag learning barn that many adults as well as youngsters enjoyed viewing. Parenting Skills Building Strong Families: Tools for Success Conference Agricultural Awareness and Profitability Lubbock County End-Of-Season Crop Management Tour Held September 20th Brant Baugh, Extension Agent - Integrated Pest Management Lubbock County extension staff conducted an End-Of- Season Crop Management tour for Lubbock County producers and agri-businessmen on September 10, A total of 28 participants attended. Dr. Randy Boman, Extension cotton agronomist, served as keynote speaker for this event. Topics included: irrigation termination, cotton defoliation timing and harvest aid products, and results for the area-wide Deep N Soil sampling program. Additional tour stops included the replicated cotton variety large-plot trial located on the Mimms farm near Acuff, and the cotton spider mite threshold study at the Isom farm near Idalou. The Building Strong Families Board meets monthly to plan the Building Strong Families conference. The conference will be held October 28, 2010 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. Results will be included in the next quarterly newsletter annual report. The Conference brochure and registration information is available on our website: Upcoming Programs Mini-Pride Kinship Care class for CPS A class was held September 2-3 with 7 attending. Team taught by Lubbock and Hale County FCS Agents, this 12 hour class will allow relatives to access foster parent funds to assist in raising relative children. Texas Department of Ag Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Four classes were taught (Meal Planning, Nutritious Snacks, Kitchen Math, Food Buying Guide and Off To a Good Start for Adult Day Care) for 27 Child and Adult Care workers. This was team taught by Hale and Lubbock County FCS Agents.

3 Extension at a Glance - 3rd Quarter 2010 Page 3 Other Activities On October 9, Lubbock County 4-H was among the hundreds of Texas 4-H'ers who were involved in helping others. For this years service project the South Plains Food Bank was chosen by the 4-H Youth and Adult Advisory Board. Our community service efforts this year included a canned food drive for the South Plains Food Bank, and also to work at the South Plains Food Bank farm on October 9 th. 4-H ers were able to participate in either or both projects. The Wildcat 4-H Club in Idalou conducted a canned food drive in Idalou at local football games and at the Thriftway Supermarket. The Eagle 4-H Club also conducted a canned food drive at Lubbock Christian School. Other 4-H clubs participating in the food drive were Roosevelt, New Deal, Frenship and Trinity. Approximately 996 pounds and $182 dollars were collected to benefit the food bank. On the 9 th, approximately 40 4-H ers and their parents showed up to work at the Food Bank Farm. These duties entailed picking green beans, mowing weeds, pulling weeds and scrubbing sweet potatoes. 125 volunteer hours were donated through this project. Emily Verkamp placed 3 rd at State 4-H Recordbook Judging with her Dog project which was entered in the Plant and Animal Open category. She was a member of the Idalou 4-H Club and is currently attending Texas Tech University. She is the daughter of Walter and Jenny Verkamp. 4-H Gold Star Recipients At the August County 4-H Achievement Banquet, three Lubbock County 4-H ers were named as new Gold Star Award recipients. Congratulations to: Melanie Jackson of the New Deal 4-H Club, Mechelle Underwood also a member of the New Deal 4-H Club, and Melanie Braune, Frenship 4-H Club Members. Each of the 4-H ers will be honored at the District Gold Star Banquet on November 22 at the Frazer Alumni Pavillion. 4-H Leader Jenny Verkamp will also be honored as a South Plains Distinguished Leader Recipient for Lubbock County. Better Living for Texans Mary Alice Roberts, BLT Extension Assistant! Better Living for Texans qualified senior citizens centers are receiving a monthly nutrition program. This past quarter programs included: Pot Luck Meals, BBQ Safety and Ground Meat and Poultry Safety.! The Food Safety lesson was presented to adult classes at Good Will Industries.! Better Living for Texans (BLT) new three lesson series Back to Basics was taught for clients of The Storks Nest.!Buckner My Father s House a Family Place resumed Christian Women Job Corp (CWJC) fall classes with the clients receiving the same new lesson series. These lessons will be evaluated as a BLT series. State-winning 4-H Recordbooks Congratulations to Alan Patschke and his state-winning Food Conservation and Preservation Recordbook. He was named first place at the State 4-H Recordbook Judging which was held in August. Alan is a Roosevelt 4-H Club member and the son of Dwayne and Carla Patschke. his is currently attending Tarleton State University.!Nutrition Education classes for preschoolers at My Father s House Child Development Center were taught once a week all summer.!maggie Trejo and Mae Simmons Community Centers Youth Food Service Camp Programs received Nutrition Education twice a month in July and once in August.!Asbury Hope Community of Shalom Youth Camp also received Nutrition Education in July.

4 Extension at a Glance - 3rd Quarter 2010 Page 4!My pyramid was taught in August at Camp Healthy Kids sponsored by the Jr. League of Lubbock and YWCA.!My pyramid, Portion Sizes, and Food Safety was taught for Teens with disabilities at a camp on the Texas Tech University campus in July. Do Well, Be Well with diabetes Diabetes occurs when the body does not make enough insulin, or the insulin it makes does not work properly. While diabetes is not curable, it is manageable. Skills are needed to effectively manage diabetes, but education is not always available. Through the use of Do Well, Be Well and Cooking Well with Diabetes, 23 program participants are improving their blood glucose management, thereby reducing their risks for complications and to attain their highest possible level of wellness. The Cooking Well with Diabetes program provides the practical application of the knowledge and skills gained in the Do Well, Be Well With Diabetes. A combined Do Well, Be Well/Cooking Well With Diabetes is held on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Arnett-Benson Health Clinic on Clovis Hwy. in cooperation with the Community Health Center of Lubbock. Call for more information on the next series. Four CHCL educators have been trained with the Spanish Diabetes Curriculum Yo Puede Controlor mi Diabetes. This class will be offered soon. Pressure Canner Testing One canner testing was held with 5 gauges tested for safety. Materials and information on safe canning have been dispersed to clientele in the South Plains. Texas Extension Education Association The Lunch Bunch TEEA Club in Lubbock County met recently to plan programs for and to get reports from the State Meeting in Wichita Falls. Programs will include: Herbs in the Kitchen, Buttons, Recycling Grandmother s China, Connecting Generations, Communications - Roger, Pumpkins, and tour at the Wind Power Museum. The club meets at the County Extension Office at noon on the first Tuesday of each month. For more information, call Food Protection Management Classes E. One Food Protection Certification test was proctored during this quarter. 5 Extension at a Glance - 3rd Quarter 2010 Page 5 Upcoming Programs Goat Management Workshop October 20, 2010 A meet goat management workshop will be held October 20 th at 2:30pm. Lubbock has about 2,000 head of breeding-age meat goat does, and the numbers are growing. Those goats generated approximately $150,000 last year. Lubbock County has a lot of small acreage landowners who have 10 to 50 head. Topics include health, nutrition and management, reproduction, marketing and selection while evaluating live animals. For more information contact the Lubbock County Extension office at Transmission Line Seminars October 27 th, 2010 A Transmission line seminar is scheduled October 27 th 3:00-5:30pm at the Texas AgriLife Research & Extension Center, 1102 East FM The seminar will feature expert information on the electric transmission line process, CREZ, and options for private landowners who may be impacted by proposed transmission line routes. Abilene attorney and Texas Wildlife Association Secretary Glen Webb and attorney Judon Fambrough of the Texas A&M Real Estate Center will provide presentations at the event. Sponsors for the event are the Texas Wildlife Association, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and Lubbock County Agrilife Extension. This seminar is free and open to the public. For more information contact the Lubbock County Extension office at High Plains Ag Conference December 1, 2010 The 2nd Annual High Plains Ag Conference will be held December 1, 8:30-3:00pm at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Lubbock. Participants will be able to earn 5 CEU s toward their Private Applicator Licence. Also Certified Crop Advisors will receive 5 CEU s for the day. More information will follow as we get closer to the date or contact the Lubbock County Extension office at North Region 4-H and FFA Species Clinic December 5, 2010 An educational program focused on livestock projects, character development and quality assurance. The North Region 4-H and FFA Beef, Lamb, Goat & Swine training is intended to provide an educational opportunity for new or experienced families (4-H and FFA) participating in a livestock project. The main purpose is to teach the basic principles of livestock management as they relate to facility maintenance, selection, nutrition, animal health, handling, showmanship and transportation. Quality Assurance programs are discussed to ensure the safe and legal use of drugs or medications to facilitate the ethical care, development and exhibition of livestock. Parents and leaders are encouraged to remember that livestock project (regardless of specie) are to be used as tools in the process of youth development. These youth are learning skills that will impact their entire life and ultimately everyone around them.
