1 College News Director of Middle School - Update Newsletter September 6 No.26 Dear Families and Community Members, It is hard to fathom that we have entered into September and are less than three weeks away from the end of Term 3. As always the students and teachers of the Middle School have worked tirelessly on a myriad of activities and tasks. At the recent Middle School Assembly it was great to see students being acknowledged for their hard work and receiving awards from our Principal. In Year 7 the students are currently working on their second project for this term following the successful completion of their Ancient China or India inquiry task. This culminated in another Friday afternoon expo where many of our Year 7 parents came to see the students work. As part of our work on Scientific Classification the whole year level spent a day at Melbourne Zoo and undertook an education program with zoo staff. Year 8 have also been learning out of the classroom with their recent trip to Scienceworks, Year 8 Students at Scienceworks following their exploration into electrical circuits. From all reports the students displayed exemplary behaviour throughout the day. Last Friday all students were involved in Medieval Day, an event that has become part of the calendar in the Year 8 program and one that the students thoroughly enjoy. Credit must go to the Year 8 teaching team for organising such engaging and worthwhile days for our students. Around 50 Year 9 students are in the City over the next fortnight as part of the Mordialloc Experience. They will be frantically gathering information to complete their research tasks once they are back at school. I look forward to seeing the finished product during their expo day. All Year 9 students are also currently selecting their subjects for next year and I urge them to consult with their parents before submitting their final selections. By now you would have all heard about the resounding success that the school production was this year. I was very proud of the high number of Year 7, 8 and 9 students who I saw on stage or running around as part of the backstage crew. It augers well for the future of the Performing Arts at our school. I would like to take this opportunity to remind all parents to book in a time for our upcoming student-led conferences in the last week of term. It s a great way to hear from your child about their learning. This can add valuable points on top of their ATAR as part of a VTAC SEAS application and increase access to many universities. Phone Centrelink to request a hardcopy of your Centrelink statement (downloaded or photocopies are not accepted). Students should bring this to the Mordialloc College Careers office by September 17th to be posted off with the official VTAC forms. All funds are going toward purchasing materials that will support the villages we will be visiting and volunteering at in November. We would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets for their support of this important program. 6 Uniforms Advertising Are you Ex Navy, Army or Air Force? Then Carry On (Victoria) may be able to help you with education costs if you meet our eligibility criteria. If you have served in the Australian Defence Forces or Allied Forces and you wish to apply for a Secondary Education Grant for 2015, please telephone Carry On (Victoria) on to establish eligibility and request an application form. Carry On (Victoria) assists Secondary School students in Years 7-12 with grants for expenses such as fees, books, uniforms, excursions etc. For those students going on to Tertiary Education a grant may also be available. Children whose Parent/s or Legal Guardian/s have a need for financial assistance and comply with our eligibility criteria may apply.
