1 PENNSBURY PARTNERS PROGRAM ANNUAL REPORT PENNSBURY PARTNERS & GRANTS PROGRAM CONTINUES TO THRIVE The Pennsbury Partners Program (PPP) has forged over 1,000 partnerships with businesses and local community organizations during the last decade for the benefit of Pennsbury students. These partnerships enable the School District to: demonstrate real-life applications of the Pennsbury curriculum; offer opportunities for students to provide community service; or offer mentoring programs and other career awareness and development activities to prepare students for satisfying careers. Each partnership helps to prepare students for higher education and the workforce of our future. PARTNERSHIP & GRANT SUCCESSES THIS YEAR The Pennsbury Partners Program had another busy and successful year. Some highlights include: 1. Established new partnerships with NASTAR Center (National Aerospace Training & Research), The Farm School at Snipes, Lower Bucks Family YMCA, G.O.A.L. (Greenbelt Overhaul Alliance of Levittown), Bard Holding, Inc., Terracycle, and Modell s Sporting Goods, Inc.; 2. Celebrated the 11 th year of recognizing outstanding business and non-profit partnerships via Annual Partners Recognition Dinner. Over 200 people attended; 3. S.A.G.E. (Senior Adults for Greater Education) a significant partnership this year, we were able to offer S.A.G.E. volunteers for three elementary schools: Fallsington, Penn Valley and Quarry Hill, with hopes of introducing the program to additional schools in the school year. The senior volunteers clocked over 1,132 hours in approximately 30 classrooms which is the equivalent of more than 28 weeks of full-time employment; 4. DISTRICT PARTNERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Over 125 partnership activities this year were submitted electronically and included into the Partnership Activity Knowledgebase (PAK) interactive Database.

These funds will be used to support the PPP Mini-Grants for the school year. Listed below are examples of outstanding school partnerships that focus on Curriculum, Career Awareness and/or Community Service opportunities: Afton Elementary, 2 nd Grade Language Arts and Science Curricula (Vocabulary and Career Awareness) The Lizard Guys An educational assembly at Afton Elementary enabled children to gain real-world knowledge of different types of reptiles, develop vocabulary, and practice effective speaking and listening skills. Charles Boehm Middle, 7 th Grade Science Curriculum (Science and Career Awareness) Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems Aerospace Engineers from Lockheed Martin visited seventh grade students at Charles Boehm Middle School celebrating National Engineers Week. Fallsington Elementary, 5 th Grade Multidisciplinary (Science, Math, Vocabulary and Career Awareness) Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22 Fallsington Elementary received a $500 grant from the BCIU to host a twoway videoconference called "Moon, Mars, and Beyond" through The Challenger Learning Center by Wheeling Jesuit University/NASA. Working in teams, with a live representative simulating a "mission command center," students were challenged to find a missing spacecraft lost in space using science, language arts and math skills throughout their unforgettable "journey." 2

3 Pennsbury High School East Music Curriculum (Music and Career Awareness) Composer Allen Krantz, Temple University Allen Krantz conducted a well-received master class with PHS Symphonic Winds Class of approximately 75 students, and then entertained questions on music careers and the musical composition process. Charles Boehm Middle, Pennwood Middle, William Penn Middle 7 th Grade Girls Science and Math Achievement Awards American Association of University Women (AAUW) Statistics show that there are not enough American students studying Science and Math to guarantee that America will have the future scientists that we will need. Furthermore, there are certainly not enough females in these academic areas. One way to encourage young women to pursue careers in these fields is to recognize their aptitude at a young age when they are impressionable. In order to encourage our young women, the Makefield Area Branch of the AAUW (American Association of University Women) holds a Girls' Recognition Reception each year to honor seventh grade female students recommended by their teachers for being outstanding in math and/or science. On May 10, 2010, at Charles Boehm, the following 18 Pennsbury seventh grade girls were honored for their achievement in math and/or science. Congratulations to all. Charles Boehm Middle School: Carolyn Hartwick, Taylor Luise and Ashley Morrell, math; Amy Hobday, Kathryn Houser and Jenna Liebreich, science. Pennwood Middle School: Anita Ayyaswami, Grace Kim and Molly Bernstein-Weitz, math; Sarah Burke, Mackenzie King and Lindsey Labiak, science. William Penn Middle School: Alison Bomentre, Audry Goldberg and Linda Zeng, math; Tara Israel, Karen Johnson and Victoria Moncur, science. Afton Elementary, 3 rd Grade Science Curriculum (Earth Day and Environmental Careers and Concepts) ENVIRON International Corporation: Thomas Fusillo, Managing Principal at ENVIRON, visited with 3 rd grade students in April to talk about careers in environmental science, to stress the importance and history of Earth Day and inform the students about environmental preservation, its protection, and its clean-up. 3

Students received guided tours to learn about renewable resources. During the school year, the students collected items used in production earning them money and helping the environment. Walt Disney Elementary 5 th Grade Social Studies Curriculum (Historical Analysis and Pennsylvania History) Three Arches Historic Home: Visiting the home of William Penn s caretaker, students learned about colonial living and were given first hand experience in a colonial kitchen and herb garden where they tasted recipes and dressed in period clothing. Fallsington, Penn Valley and Quarry Hill Elementary & S.A.G.E. (Math and Reading/Language Arts) S.A.G.E. (Senior Adults for Greater Education): Local senior citizen volunteers donated over 1,132 hours of their time to assist the students of Fallsington, Penn Valley, and Quarry Hill Elementary schools during the school year. SUCCESSFUL DISTRICT & SCHOOL GRANTS The Partners Program is happy to announce another successful year of various grants awarded to the Pennsbury School District. Competitive district awards included: PA Dept. of Health and Independence Blue Cross Active School Grant in the amount of $15,000 benefiting Charles Boehm Middle School by funding an exercise trail called We R Fit ; PA Dept. of Environmental Protection & Dept. of Education High Performance Green Schools Planning Grant in the amount of $25,000 to benefit Makefield Elementary; PA Dept. of Education Classrooms for the Future in the amount of $25,000 to benefit the CFF Program as coach money; and PA Dept. of Education in the amount of $15,000 to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for Fallsington Elementary. The Pennsbury Partners Program awarded several competitive PPP mini-grants from existing partners in excess of $3,250, which benefited: Afton Elementary, The Lizard Guys Assembly, The Lizard Guys of NJ, $345. Fallsington Elementary, Japanese Culture Experience, A-1 Japanese Steakhouse, $55; 5 th Grade Regional Environmental Education Program, Lower Bucks County Joint Municipal Authority Waste Water Treatment Plant and School Board Member Gary Sanderson, $90; Let s Learn About 4

5 Safety, NOVA (Network of Victim Assistance), $75; and Moving and Grooving Literacy Nights, S.A.G.E. and Barnes & Noble, $280. Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary, Japanese Culture Day, Shofuso, $500. Penn Valley Elementary, Seniors + Students + Reading = Special Memories, S.A.G.E., $500. Quarry Hill Elementary, Intergeneration Community Sing-a-Long, Sunrise Senior Living, $105. Walt Disney Elementary, Colonial Days, Three Arches Historical Home, $500. Pennwood Middle, Terracycle Tour, Terracycle, $300. Pennsbury High School East, 14 th Annual Career Fair, $500. Additionally, the Pennsbury Partners Program collected $6,375 in sponsorships and donations from Partners, which will be offered to Action Team Members in the form of partnership mini-grants next year. The Partners Program offers support to individual schools and teachers interested in applying for grant funding. Many grant opportunities provided by corporate grants and foundations were communicated with Action Team Members throughout the school year via interactive PPP/Grants News and Opportunities e- Newsletters: Grants 101 Workshop and Writing Winning Proposals two half-day workshops offered to PPP Liaisons in January. Available competitive grants published monthly in PPP enewsletters 47 grants listed between September and March totaling $276,900.
