The Center will coordinate all the activities of the college's international programs. Bo's new extension is Taking over for Bo at the ECC Grants Office part time Monday, Wednesday and Friday is Philip Sutton who has worked as a consultant for the college's economic development programs since 1994 and who has extensive experience writing grants for community colleges. We wish Bo all the best in her exciting new position! Kudos to Dr. Cal Caswell and the El Camino College Workplace Learning Resource Center for the award of a $500,000 grant from the Chancellor's Office Economic and Workforce Development program to train workers for the maritime industry. In partnership with the International Boatmen's Union, the project will serve the unemployed, the existing maritime industry workforce, and high school students interested in pursuing careers in the maritime industries. Over the next 18 months the project will train an estimated 400 students in Basic Safety, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Tankerperson in Charge, Qualified members of the Engine Department, and Hazmat. Grant / Foundation Announcements National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Grants for Teaching and Learning Resources and Curriculum Development Grants for Teaching and Learning Resources and Curriculum Development support projects to improve specific areas of humanities education and are intended to serve as national models of excellence. They must draw upon scholarship in the humanities and use scholars and teachers as advisers. NEH is especially interested in projects that offer solutions to problems frequently encountered by teachers. The dates and duration of each project are listed under

Selection committees for seminars and institutes are directed to give first consideration to applicants who have not participated in an NEH supported seminar or institute in the last three years. Applications due March 1, Link: National Science Foundation: Advanced Technological Education (ATE) With an emphasis on two-year colleges, the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program focuses on the education of technicians for the high-technology fields that drive our nation's economy. The program involves partnerships between academic institutions and employers to promote improvement in the education of science and engineering technicians at the undergraduate and secondary school levels. The ATE program supports curriculum development; professional development of college faculty and secondary school teachers; career pathways to two-year colleges from secondary schools and from two-year colleges to four-year institutions; and other activities. A secondary goal is articulation between two-year and four-year programs for K-12 prospective teachers that focus on technological education. Additionally, the program invites proposals focusing on applied research relating to technician education. Estimated Total Program Funding: $39,000, (Cost sharing/matching funds are required.) Expected Number of Awards: 60 Preliminary proposals due Apr 26, 2005 Link: Environmental Protection Agency: Research Apprenticeship Program for High School Students The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Risk Management Research Laboratory is located in Cincinnati, Ohio and is the site of the Research Apprenticeship Program for High School Students. The Request for Initial Proposals (RFIP) seeks institutions of higher education and other non-profit organizations to implement an eight week apprenticeship program for up to 15 high school students. The primary objective of the Cooperative Agreement is to increase the number and proficiency of students entering environmental science and engineering careers by providing research apprenticeships in EPA laboratories and in the recipient's facilities. Proposals received in response to the RFIP should address the applicant's approach to: * identifying, screening, and selection of students with high science aptitudes for placement, * paying the necessary student salaries/stipends and administration of the program,

3 Page 3 of 6 * providing an enrichment program consisting of tours of environmental research facilities and presentations by environmental researchers, and *providing EPA with an evaluation of the program's effectiveness. Funding Level: $180,000 to $240,000 for 3 years. The Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Program (administered by the Universal Services Branch of the Rural Utilities Service (RUS)) funds the use of advanced telecommunications technologies to help communities meet those needs. The grants, which are awarded through competitive process, may be used to fund telecommunications, computer networks and related advanced technologies. Funding Level: $50,000 - $500,000 Contact Person: Keiser, Joan, Management Analyst, Distance Learning & Telemedicine Branch, Phone (202) , Fax (202) , dltinfo@usda.gov Proposals Due: February 1, 2005 Link: Hispanic Serving Institutions Education Grants Program Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Services This competitive grants program is intended to promote and strengthen the ability of Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSIs) to carry out education programs that attract outstanding students and produce graduates capable of enhancing the Nation's food and agricultural scientific and professional work force. Projects may involve individual institutions, consortia of HSIs, or cooperative initiatives between two (2) or more HSIs or with other colleges and universities, units of government, or the private sector. The Department of Agriculture is designated as the lead Federal Agency for higher education in the food and agricultural sciences. In this context, the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) has specific responsibility to initiate and support projects to strengthen higher education teaching programs in the food and agricultural sciences. USDA and CSREES priority topics include: * Agricultural and Environmental Quality * Agricultural Security * Genomics and Food and Fiber Production * Obesity, Human Nutrition, and Food Science * Food Safety * Rural and Community Development

An organization may submit only one application under Grants for Arts Projects. This application may be submitted under Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth OR Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grants OR Access to Artistic Excellence OR Summer Schools in the Arts. Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth: To advance arts education. This category funds projects that help children and youth acquire appreciation, knowledge, and understanding of and skills in the arts. Projects must provide participatory learning and engagement of students with skilled artists, teachers, and excellent art, and may take place in school-based or community-based settings. The focus is on children and youth in the general age range of five through eighteen. All projects must include the following components: 1) the opportunity for students and their teachers to experience exemplary works of art, in live form where possible; 2) study of the art experienced including the acquisition of skills for practicing the art form where appropriate; 3) the performance/making of art within the discipline(s) studied; and 4) student assessment according to national, state, or local arts education standards. An expedited application review allows applicants to learn whether they have been recommended for a grant more quickly than in the Arts Endowment's other categories. This category encourages and supports artistic creativity, preserves our

Typical projects include the commissioning and development of new work, the presentation of performances or exhibitions at home or on tour, the documentation and preservation of significant art works or cultural traditions, the publication and dissemination of work important to the field, and the professional training of artists. The Arts Endowment is particularly interested in projects that reach and involve new audiences. Funding Level: $5,000 - $150,000 Contact Person: Access to Artistic Excellence, Staff, Phone 202/ , webmgr@arts.endow.gov Proposals Due: March 14 and August 15, 2005 Link: Summer Schools in the Arts: Summer Schools in the Arts supports rigorous, challenging summer arts education programs that enable children and youth to acquire knowledge and skills in the arts as well as gain lifelong interests in the arts and culture. A summer school in the arts is one that: * Provides summer instruction in one or more arts disciplines. * Offers a comprehensive curriculum where participants actively create and/or perform as well as respond to the arts. * Culminates in public performances, exhibitions, or other demonstrations of the participants' achievements in the arts. * Measures the extent to which students gain knowledge and skills according to national, state, or local arts education standards through pre- and post-assessment tests. * Offers instruction to the same group of students over a minimum of 90 contact hours. * May provide free or subsidized tuition for students of limited financial resources. * Serves children and youth generally between the ages of 5 and 18. As part of this program, grantees will be required to participate in an evaluation and assessment training workshop. Each organization will send at least one person - either the project director or evaluator - to attend a one-day session in Washington, DC. The Grants.gov system will accept Statements of Interest through May 23, Following review of these statements, it is anticipated that no more than 100 organizations will be invited, by July 18, 2005, to submit formal applications. Formal applications must be submitted through Grants.gov and will be accepted through September 12, Link: New Foundation Funding Opportunities Hewlett Packard Teaching Grants The HP Technology for Teaching Initiative for Higher Education

6 Page 6 of 6 supports educators who have a project that redesigns a core course in a way that integrates granted HP mobile technology and positively impacts student learning. Full-time faculty who are able to demonstrate academic and instructional leadership in their discipline and/or their campus can submit a grant application. Project proposals must focus on redesigning a core course in the math, science (life sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, computer sciences), engineering, or business department. Special consideration will be given to 1) institutions serving low-income populations, 2) have educational technology and instructional leadership support, and 3) will contribute toward achieving the institution's vision and plans for broader deployment of mobile technology solutions in the learning environment. Award Amount: $55,000 in HP Mobile Technology Equipment (Wireless HP Tablet PCs, portable projector, printer); $15,000 in cash as a stipend for the faculty member(s) that will serve as the project's Principle Investigator(s) (PI); and $500 travel expenses to attend a Mobile Technology Conference in fall Estimated number of awards: 25 Proposals due: February 15, 2005 Link:
