There are many reasons for that, and Vocational Service is one of them. This year, I wish you to place a special emphasis on Vocational Service, which is sometimes the forgotten Avenue of Service in Rotary. High ethical standards in business and personal life are still as important today as they were in Indeed, many of the problems our world is facing today have been caused by the failure to observe such standards in business affairs. Vocational Service, in Rotary, means that we are committed to honest business and unassailable ethics, and that we are equally committed to using our vocational skills and advantages to help others. The idea is simple enough but it is unique to Rotary. Many service organizations are open to anyone who wishes to join. That has never been the case in Rotary. Rotarians only seek out as members those who are qualified those who have the character, the ability, and the resolve to make a real contribution to their club. I have long believed that the bedrock of Rotary is our commitment to ethical behavior. It has been putting what s right above what s convenient and Service Above Self that has made Rotary different from the rest. That is why we must always remember that whatever we do, we are each the public face of Rotary. We are each the standard-bearers of our organization. What one member does, for good or for ill, reflects on all of us. That trust has been a major part of our success in polio eradication the fact that we are known in every community, and known to be people of goodwill and good hearts. If we wish to see our organization grow and prosper, we must keep Vocational Service front and center in our minds and actions. We must seek out skilled and determined men and women of character. We must do what is right, even when it is inconvenient. And we must always, always, put Service Above Self. The area clubs went all out to win the first ever Annual Jet Award for their Day At the A s tailgate The clubs also jointed forces with Save Our Shores to for a beach clean up day followed by a BBQ hosted by the Freedom and Watsonville clubs. Scotts Valley led an effort to create a giant Rotary Wheel in the sand. A fun day was had by all. AREA 7 Assistant Governor Jeanne MacLaren jeanne.maclaren@chw.edu Rotary Harvest Council of Santa Cruz County has representation from all the Area 7 Rotary Clubs and sponsors a number of annual food drives. Last year Rotary donations totaled 33,271 pounds of food. Freedom Past President Marsha Nelsen and Watsonville President Georgeann Cowles take a break from sorting. Freedom is involved in over 35 community service projects and agencies including diverse groups such as Special Olympics; California Grey Bears; Flying Doctors; and CASA. San Lorenzo Valley Club distributed dictionaries to 4 th grade students while President Julie Haff looks on. Santa Cruz Sunrise recently held a fundraiser Raising Hope by Raising a House to benefit the Santa Cruz Children s Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition. On September 5 th they lifted a Victorian housing using 17,000 helium balloons (with the aid of some heavy duty equipment) just like in the Pixar movie UP. Each balloon represented a child with a life-threatening disease. It was an amazing event! (and it s not too late to donate)

This includes the World Fund in which the Trustees decided to reduce spending by 70% during the 2009 2010 Rotary year. What does that mean to your Club?

A real time to party & chicken dance (a Ron Sekkel favorite) Watsonville s Mayor Antonio Rivas declared September 19 th as Polio Eradication Day at the Watsonville club s annual Lewisburger Booth at the Santa Cruz County Fair. In addition, the Watsonville Club (in collaboration with the Freedom Club) continues to send medical supplies and services to Peru. The Rotary Foundation PDG Bradford R. Howard, Chair The Rotary Foundation (TRF) has been and remains one of the most financially stable non-profit entities in the world even in today s current global economic crisis. TRF s conservative leadership is making short term decisions that will best protect the future of our Foundation. Therefore the Trustees have cut back spending on programs, staffing and overhead. This includes the World Fund in which the Trustees decided to reduce spending by 70% during the Rotary year. What does that mean to your Club? The Annual Program Funds are invested for three years. TRF uses interest derived from this investment to pay for the Foundation s overhead. At the end of three years monies are divided into two equal parts, 50% is credited back to the District as District Designated Funds (DDF) and 50% is kept by TRF as the World Fund, which is invested into a securities portfolio many TRF programs are paid by the World Fund including Matching Grants. Although there is a reduction in the World Fund, there is NO reduction in DDF. All DDF moneys remains in Evanston, credited to our District and ready for our immediate use. What do I do if my grant application did not get funded? You will have to find alternative funding. Your club can make up the difference by Contributing more cash Securing DDF from other clubs in District 5170 Securing DDF from other Districts Withdraw your grant application How can I get more information? Attend the October 15th Avenues of Service dinner event. The key note speaker, PDG Brenda Cressey, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator will talk about TRF. When: May 3 June 5, 2010 Where: District 4560, southwestern Minas Gerais, Brazil Who: Applicants must live or work District 5170 and apply by October 1, The Rotary Foundation's Group Study Exchange program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for a Rotarian of any age and four professionals between the ages of 25 and 40. For four weeks the team will experience Brazilian culture, economy, and hospitality; observe how their vocations are practiced abroad; develop professional and personal relationships; exchange ideas; and participate in the life and customs of Brazil while sharing information about their vocations and life in the Bay Area. During this four week program participants will enjoy vocational visits in which they will meet with Professional counterparts to exchange ideas; give presentations to Rotary clubs; take part in social events and meetings with local dignitaries; attend the District 4560 Conference; and go on cultural and sight seeing tours. Sekkel, Leadership Academy Dean The Leadership Academy founded in 1998 in District 5110, prepares past club Presidents to assume positions of leadership at the District level. This very successful nine month program started in our District by PDG Carolyn Schuetz, does not charge fees and is conducted through the Internet with four in person meetings. It includes six courses divided into two semesters with a final essay. Students are selected by the Leadership Academy after receiving nominations from Assistant District Governors, and others. The current instructors are PP Jolene Bortz, PP Ginger MacDonald, PDG Jim Mealey, PP Renee Mello, Harriet Scholer, Founder and PDG Carolyn Schuetz. STEP 2 Present your personalized Proclamation to your Mayor Brief your Mayor on the financial investment and work Rotary has made to eradicate Polio worldwide. Invite your Mayor to support and proclaim a day in October 2009 as Rotary s END POLIO NOW Day STEP 3 Once the Mayor has agreed and will proclaim a Day in October Rotary s END POLIO NOW Day he will invite your to attend the Council Meeting. At the Council Meeting, the Mayor will present the proclamation to your club. 6 ROTARY DISTRICT 5170 HELPING MEMBERS TO FEEL WELCOME Page 6 Think back to your first day of attending something new: school, job, or social event. We may be excited, anxious and ambivalent. How will I be welcomed? Will I make a good first impression? Will there be people I can relate to? Most of us have had such experiences and may recall how we felt particularly if we were the only new person. The Rotary Club of Cupertino has been fortunate to have over 30 new Rotarians join over the past 12 months. Helping members to feel welcomed is each of our responsibility. So here are Liz top picks of things each of us can do when attending the weekly meeting. 1. Set a personal goal to make new friends with new Rotarians you have never met before. 2. Seek out a Rotarian you don t know and sit with that person, spend fellowship time getting to know him or her. 3. Invite a new Rotarian to join you in a program, activity or committee and be their buddy. 4. Sit in different location each week with the plan to meet new Rotarians or even Rotarians you have not really had the opportunity to engage with over the years. 5. If you are a new Rotarian, go up to seasoned Rotarians and ask to sit with them at lunch. If you are a seasoned Rotarian, make a point to sit with new Rotarians. 6. Make a point to connect with a new Rotarian before the weekly meeting in order to make a date to sit together at lunch. Do you notice a Rotarian sitting alone? Sit with him or her; help to connect them with another Rotarian. Liz Gallegos, President Rotary Club of Cupertino A Treatise on Becoming a PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR By PDGs Carolyn Schuetz and Ron Sekkel Acknowledging the fact that the best job in Rotary is that of the PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR, we offer these insights to Rotary Leaders who might aspire to this lofty position. A Past District Governor enjoys the respect and admiration of most Rotarians. He/she also has the opportunity to serve on Rotary International committees, to attain prestigious assignments in the district and beyond, to attend meetings of regional and international Rotary leaders, and to continue the tradition of excellence in leadership for Rotary District A District 5170 Past District Governor joins the club of special fellowship and friendship of PDGs in this district. Note that the prerequisite to becoming a Past District Governor is completing a year of service as a DISTRICT GOVERNOR. Being a District Governor is all about expansion: expanding your knowledge of Rotary; expanding your social circle; expanding your leadership skills; expanding your professional contacts; expanding your business and black tie wardrobe; expanding your culinary experiences expanding your waistline! This year as Governor is an exciting opportunity to lead the 4000 members of our district to even greater accomplishments. It is a year of hard work, but great satisfactions. Since the deadline for nominations for District Governor in District 5170 is November 1, 2009, time is of the essence!
