1 THE TWILIGHT TORCH Rotary Club of Bakersfield Twilight Cecil Martin, President December 31, 2009 Volume 1, Number 16 Year-End Edition: Celebrating! NOTICE! Starting with this issue, the Torch will be published twice monthly. Between meetings you will be able to keep up with events, announcements, and speakers, through our website: CPrg/home/homeA.asp? cid=5414 What a year it has been! (And the it s only half over!) Bakersfield Twilight received its charter, conducted its first big fundraiser ( Moonlight in Paradise ) to benefit Goodwill s vocational education program, conducted a number of service projects (including, among others, a Pancake Breakfast for our homeless brethren and a garden project with the MS Society), and ended the year with a Christmas party at Kern Youth Bridges (see the picture below). We also sponsored our first ever Trivia Night, where Twilighters, guests, and friends teamed together to match wits with each other and compete for cash prizes. This particular event was so popular that it is being repeated on our first meeting night of 2010, January 6. Upcoming Programs: January 6 TRIVIA NIGHT! January 13 Club Assembly January 20 TBA Inside this issue: Year-End Edition: Celebrating! 1 Celebrating Christmas Around the World 2 The Twilight Zone 3 PRLS Gather: Upcoming Seminars in Bakersfield 3 Make-ups and Upcoming District Events 5
2 Page 2 Celebrating Christmas Around the World On December 9, Twilighters visited the old Brock s building in downtown Bakersfield, where Christmas traditions from around the world are displayed and celebrated during the month of November.
3 Page 3 On December 2, District Governor Luz Maria Ortiz paid a visit to her newest club. Luz Maria gave a motivational talk about her own career in Rotary, the countries she has visited with her husband (also a Rotarian), and her hopes for the future of Rotary. Twilighter John Vasinda welcomes new member Marie Lee to the Twilighter fold. PRLS Gathering PRLS, Rotary District 5240 s unique leadership training program, is coming to Bakersfield in the Spring. PRLS begins with a basic, one-day seminar that covers five modules: "Leadership," "Leading a Meeting," "Public Speaking," "Rotary, Your Club and You," and "Communications." Graduates of Basic PRLS can elect to take the Master PRLS series. Master PRLS 1 and 2 are devoted public speaking. MPRLS 3 focuses on the art of facilitation. MPRLS 4, Situational Leadership, teaches how to judge the skills development of team members, fit the right people into the right jobs, and define the leadership principles required in order to manage any team effectively. In MPRLS 5, Project Management, participants learn how to put it all together, using all the skills addressed in Basic PRLS and MPRLS 1-4 in order to plan and carry out large scale projects. Each PRLS session is one day in length, at a cost of $50 per session. Although Basic PRLS is a prerequisite to the MPRLS series, the MPRLS seminars can be taken in any order with one notable exception. Extemporaneous Speaking must be taken before Planned Public Speaking. Consider taking at least Basic PRLS. You ll be amazed at how much you learn...no matter how much you know!
