Reed & Weave President s Letter... Hi There! Summer is winding down. Some schools are starting up in the next week or so. I hope you have had a productive summer and survived the various heat waves.

It is always fun to demonstrate at the museum and to share our work with the public.

Since there is not enough time to actually do a complete sheep to shawl, the plan is to show the various steps involved. We need people to card, spin, weave, and knit.

Please contact Suzanne Chappell and volunteer for something or let her know at the next meeting. I look forward to seeing you on September 29th and at our next guild meeting.

1 Reed & Weave President s Letter... Hi There! Summer is winding down. Some schools are starting up in the next week or so. I hope you have had a productive summer and survived the various heat waves. Thank you Janet for hosting the August meeting. On Saturday, September 29, we have an opportunity to demonstrate at the museum from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. It is always fun to demonstrate at the museum and to share our work with the public. In addition, when we demonstrate at the museum, we are fulfilling our responsibility to the museum so we can continue to meet there. This year we have been asked to do a sheep to shawl. Since there is not enough time to actually do a complete sheep to shawl, the plan is to show the various steps involved. We need people to card, spin, weave, and knit. We also need people to help with the hands on projects for the public to try. There is something for everyone to do. Please contact Suzanne Chappell and volunteer for something or let her know at the next meeting. I look forward to seeing you on September 29th and at our next guild meeting. Demonstration Day at the Museum Saturday, September 29 Noon 4 p.m. Calling all volunteers! IEHG will be demonstrating at the San Bernardino County Museum on September 29.

The museum coordinators wanted us to do a modified sheep to shawl like we did in 2017, but 4 hours is not enough time to spin, ply and weave even a scarf.

4 Demonstration Day at the Museum Saturday, September 29 Noon 4 p.m. Calling all volunteers! IEHG will be demonstrating at the San Bernardino County Museum on September 29. A Saturday was requested because the attendance in higher than on Sunday. The museum coordinators wanted us to do a modified sheep to shawl like we did in 2017, but 4 hours is not enough time to spin, ply and weave even a scarf. But we ll try to have all the steps of the process demonstrated. A sheep will not be shorn, but we re hoping to have two sheep, one shorn and the other fully dressed. We would like to have a full fleece on display. We will demonstrate cleaning and carding (by hand or using a carder), spinning, plying and many of the activities that can be done using the yarn. That would include knitting, crocheting, naalbinding, weaving on shaft, rigid heddle or inkle looms, card weaving and felting. We will also need volunteers to help with children s activities using yarn or fiber. Kumihimo cords on a disk, weaving potholders and perhaps one other activity will be offered. Let me know of any ideas you have that are easily learned in a short time span. The Inland Empire Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America may also be demonstrating. If so, they could have a simple activity using wool yarns. So weavers and spinners, bring a project you are working on and be prepared to show visitors the process and maybe let them try their hand at it. Sallie usually brings a 4-shaft loom for kids, and I bring a rigid heddle loom for them to try as well. This event will be advertised, so we're hoping for a good turn out of children and adults. I will have a sign-up sheet at the IEHG meetings. Please contact me if you have ideas for activities, and/or want to volunteer. Please consider volunteering. It is always lots of fun! 5 DIANNE TOTTEN A Two Day Workshop - October 13 & 14, 2018 with Inland Empire Handweaver's Guild Dianne Totten, a weaver for 30 years and teacher for twenty, uses a variation of handwoven shibori to produce what she calls crimp cloth to create one-of-a-kind garments with the heat-set fabric. Her expertise in sewing complements her passion for weaving. Dianne s award-winning work has appeared nationally and internationally. She teaches at John C. Campbell Folk School in NC as well as nationally and internationally for guilds and conferences and has been published in SS&D, Handwoven, Weavers, Complex Weavers Journal, and Vävmagasinet. Väv magazine chose her jacket as Best in Show in its category at the Swedish National Convention Fashion Show. I am excited to share with you what I have learned and the techniques I have developed. 6 Weaving and spinning classes IEHG Fall 2018 Weaving Classes Suzanne Chappell, Instructor Weaving for Beginners and Beyond covers weaving on either 4-shaft or rigid heddle loom, and is designed for students with little or no weaving experience, those who need a refresher course, those still needing some guidance, and weavers interested in broadening the scope of their weaving knowledge. A session consists of eight 3- hour classes, and classes are limited to 3-4 students. Saturday classes, offered only in September, meet only 4 times. Topics include Basic weave structures with samples, yarn types and selection, planning a project, measuring warp, dressing the loom, winding a shuttle, weaving and finishing your project, parts of a loom and weaving tools, reading a project draft (as presented in magazines). Proposed Fall 2018 Schedule day/dates and times depending on sign-ups.
