1 Textile Center 2018/19 Jerome Fiber Artist Project Grants Application Instructions In 2018, the tenth round of Jerome Fiber Artists Project Grants will be awarded through Textile Center. This program is designed to expand opportunities for emerging fiber artists in Minnesota by supporting the artists as they undertake an artistic project in the development of their studio practice. Three $6,000 grants will be awarded to support a wide range of project activities for the purpose of significant development of artistic practice, from purchasing supplies and equipment, devoting time to studio work, to travel and studying with established artists. Textile Center and the Jerome Foundation welcome applications from artists representing diverse cultural perspectives. 2 Eligibility Applicant must: Be an artist committed to the field of textiles and fiber art as the major focus of their creative practice. This can be reflected in materials, techniques, and working processes used. Have completed all formal academic training by the start of the grant period, and are not enrolled either part- or full-time in any program at a degree granting institution. Not be employed as a fiber art or art instructor at the college level during the project period, or be a member of Textile Center staff. Be fully able to participate in all grant activities and complete the scope of their project within the grant period, by the exhibition deadline. Be a resident of Minnesota for at least twelve months prior to the application deadline. Be at an emerging stage in your artistic development, looking to establish a solid reputation as a professional studio artist. Eligible applicants must be in the early stages of their careers and not yet have attained professional acknowledgment commensurate with the quality of their work. Not submit an application that asks for funds for projects currently being supported with other Jerome Foundation funding sources. Be willing to participate in a final exhibition of work produced for the project, in Textile Center s galleries at the end of the grant period. Wait for three years after the end date of their last Jerome Fiber Artists Project Grant before they are eligible to reapply for funding. Definition of Fiber Art Work should include the construction or manipulation of fibers and textiles using textile techniques such as weaving, dyeing, surface design, knitting, quilting, needlework, beading, lace making, felting, hooking, sewing, spinning, basketry, etc. Mixed media work is acceptable if the materials or techniques used are primarily textile related. Definition of Emerging Artist Textile Center identifies emerging fiber artists as artists who are in a formative career stage. We use several indicators to determine eligibility in this grant program. These indicators include: Artist is committed to the field of fiber art through demonstration of a portfolio of work. Artist is in a developing stage. The term emerging refers to artistic development, professional accomplishment and recognition, not to stylistic evolution within an artist s work. Artist has limited exhibition exposure/experience (including exhibitions, reviews, commissions, performances, residencies, publications, productions, and major collections). Artist is the recipient of limited previous grants and awards. Artist shows significant potential, but has yet to be significantly recognized from fellow artists and other arts professionals, such as critics, curators, and dealers. 2018/19 Jerome Fiber Artist Project Grants Application Instructions 2

3 NECESSARY DOCUMENTS FOR APPLICATION Artist Application- on Textile Center s website Please fill out the required information on the web form, and attach the necessary documents detailed below. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Project Proposal Please prepare a project proposal that describes the goals, intentions, and reasons for requesting funding support. For guidance, please see the attachment, Crafting your Project Proposal, linked to Textile Center s Jerome info page: Two pages maximum. Attach as a PDF. Please use size 12 font, for ease of readability by jurors. Budget You will need to include a project budget, detailing how you plan to spend your grant. Your budget must balance to ZERO when all expenses are tallied against income. Please check your math. One page maximum. Attach as a PDF. The income side of your project budget will include the $6,000 grant funds, as well as any additional income sources necessary to complete your project. Sources outside of personal cash must be secured before the start of the project and detailed in the budget. The expense side of your project budget will include expense items such as time paid to yourself to make the work, supplies, equipment, studio space, professional photography, travel, and workshop fees. Detail your expenses to the extent possible, so that the jurors understand you have done appropriate research. This can include, but is not limited to exhibitions, commissions, recognition and awards, residencies, publications and press, and grants received. 4 include your name, so that the jury process can remain anonymous. Two pages maximum. Attach as a PDF. Artist Statement This is your opportunity to explain your work to the viewing public. In particular, please make sure your statement reflects the work samples you are submitting, so that it makes sense in the context of your application. As an emerging artist, we understand that you may not have an artist statement developed that fully encompasses your body of work. Do not include your name, so that the jury process can remain anonymous. One page maximum. Attach as a PDF. Here are some questions to consider when writing your artist statement. What was I doing? How was I doing it? This could include a narrative about process and material. Why was I doing it? This could address the conceptual basis of the work. What influences me? What do I want the viewer to understand about my work (without dictating the understanding)? Letter of Intent for Mentorship If you plan to work with a master artist or participate in some other mentorship or apprenticeship, please include a letter of intent from that person (up to two people). If this is not part of your grant proposal, please ignore this attachment on your application. Two pages maximum. Attach as a PDF. Images Please use.jpg or.jpeg format. Number images 1-10, with YOUR USER ID NUMBER as a preface. For example: , , (You will use this same numbering system for your Image List.) Your images should be rotated to view correctly when opened. Please use 1920 pixels on the longest side of your image, for high definition viewing. Maximum file size is 2 MB/image. Reduce file size when saving final JPGs, if necessary. Your images will speak to your ability to create a cohesive body of work, which is an important part of your project proposal. These images will be viewed by jurors on a regular computer screen. Images may include full views, alternative views (often helpful in understanding dimensional work), installation shots, and details whatever it takes to convey your ability to create a strong body of work that builds from one piece to the next. No composite images, which means do not include more than one photo per JPG. Save each image at less than 2MG and upload in.jpg or.jpeg format only. Attach as a PDF. Expectations of all grant applicants, should you be awarded a grant: Artists will: Complete their proposed project within the grant period. Abide by program deadlines, including providing information and participating in photo shoot for exhibit announcement and press release. Attend all mandatory meetings, including Guest Artist critiques. Complete interim and final reports. Exhibit new finished work representing their project activities in the Textile Center Galleries, May July Participate in the public artist reception held during the Jerome Project Grant exhibition. Grant recipients are required to produce one or more new works for this exhibition during the project period. Textile Center will produce a postcard for the exhibition and promote it as part of the regular gallery schedule, to include a public artist reception. Selection and Notification A panel of three jurors will select the grant recipients for the 2018/2019 grant program. The panel will be comprised of accomplished fiber artists and/or art educators and professionals from throughout the country. Jurors are anonymous for the application period, but will be announced after the grants are awarded. Jurors will review individual applications and images, and each will select their top ten semifinalists based on project merit and proposal quality. A list of the top 15 semifinalists will be compiled from this ranking. Due to the number of applications received, the jury panel will only discuss in detail the project proposals of the 15 semi-finalists during the final selection meeting. Only general feedback will be available about applications and the juror selection, and only after the process is complete and awards are announced.
