4 4:00 5:15 HI! TEA WELCOME-BACK RECEPTION East Parlor, St. Joseph Hall Is Friday afternoon tea in the Social Room a blast from your CHC past? If so, Miss Corcoran would never recognize the scene that awaits you as we raise the curtain on Reunion Weekend with 2013 s remake of a treasured Chestnut Hill College tradition. Say hello to one another as you sample specialty treats while enjoying a selection of iced, chai, and spirits-infused teas and punch. Hosted by the Office of Institutional Advancement staff and the Alumni Association Board of Directors. New Twist Since Your Last Reunion! 5:30 6:30 TIME TO LEARN... LEARN ABOUT THE TIMES - PART I (Concurrent Sessions) All New Sessions 1. The Nostalgic Past (Session I): So You Love Downton Abbey? Explore Edwardian morés, customs, and lifestyle with associate professor Barbara Lonnquist. What s an entailed property, anyway? Learn more about this colorful period prior to WWI. Leave with a list of suggested characters, novels, and authors you might also enjoy. 2. The Not So Long Ago (Session I): JFK Myths & Realities Ever since Kennedy s assassination in 1963, the general public has rated John F. Kennedy one of the nation s top presidents. In contrast, American historians have placed Kennedy in the high average category. Professor David Contosta will discuss which position is myth and which is reality, and the reasons behind the disconnect in perceptions. 3. The Here & Now: A Century of Getting High Associate Professor of Psychology Meredith Kneavel will share a history of contributing social forces at work in framing societal views and laws governing the use of marijuana. Starting around the 1920s, after the end of Prohibition, the drug s story through the 1960s and 1970s now becomes increasingly interesting as individual states begin to legalize its use. Join Professor Kneavel for an enlightening overview, which also includes the biology of how marijuana works in the body and compares it to the other Schedule I drugs (opiates/cocaine/crack). And the graphics will be awesome! 4. The Days Ahead: Those Thorny Bioethical Issues They re right in front of us, generating debate, prompting heated argument, begging for answers that satisfy everyone. Associate Professor of Biology Joseph Kulkosky serves up an overview of just a few of the many biotechnology issues that will only increase in number and societal impact. Dr. K will discuss the lengthy time it takes to move a good drug to market, and he will raise the bioethical implications of genetically-modifying organisms, including humans; DNA profiling; cloning oneself, a loved one, or even a pet; embryo selection for a better baby, and more. He suggests that society needs to get a much clearer understanding of all of these fast-moving technologies that he says are screaming for legislative regulatory control. Along the way, he will incorporate valuable information on the function and regulatory regulations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the EPA, and the FDA. 04

LEARN ABOUT THE TIMES II - PART II (Concurrent Sessions) New, Additional Schedule This Year! New Sessions This Year! 5. The Nostalgic Past (Session II): Gatsby, Once Again Associate professor Suzanne del Gizzo takes a look at one of literature s most compelling cast of characters, sure to be a hot topic as film director Baz Luhrmann s remake opens in American theaters exactly three weeks before reunion. Thumb through your copy of The Great Gatsby, or come and learn about it for the first time; either way, you ll leave with a new appreciation for F. Scott Fitzgerald s celebrated novel of The American Dream, published 88 years ago, yet relevant today. In anticipating this fifth film adaptation of the Fitzgerald classic, Professor del Gizzo wrote an article in November 2009 for the online Bright Lights Film Journal in which she says: I believe we are finally ready to tell the story of The Great Gatsby properly. Why? Due to the somewhat odd combination of our present economic crisis and advances in film technology. But precisely because we are ready and because we may even really need to tell ourselves the story of Gatsby right now there is a lot at stake in this adaptation. Read her entire article at 6. The Not So Long Ago (Session II): Vatican II & Women: Promises & Challenges Professor of Religious Studies Marie Conn will surely pose some probing questions and comments as she reviews what was both expected and realized for women in the Church following the groundbreaking Vatican Council. Join Professor Conn, a Reunion Weekend favorite, for a visit to the Sixties and an overview of the results that rolled out in the decades since. 11:15 12:45 P.M.
