A Gallup report found that many Americans typically work 47 hours each week, not 40. This resulting burnout can lead to constant fatigue, insomnia, frustration, lingering colds, headaches, ulcers, hypertension, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
3 This highly interactive, engaging and uplifting workshop will help these individuals explore areas where fatigue may occur. Penn Campus Drugs of Abuse: The Elephant in the Room -Mark Woodward, PIO Education Officer and Legislative Liaison, Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics The presentations will help parents and professionals understand drug trends impacting schools and communities, including new marijuana methods, prescription drug abuse prevention, how teens use social media to access drugs, as well as signs and symptoms of substance abuse. Penn Campus Helping Students Select Their Pathway -Linda Belknap, Career Counselor (Carl Perkins), Autry Technology Center -Millisa Ellefson, Student Services, Eastern Oklahoma County Technology Center This session shows how local technology centers use career development materials to assure all of their students have the planning they need to be successful in their pursuit of further education and employment. 8 th grade Career Development will be emphasized. Penn Campus Oklahoma s Promise Information and Update -Carol Alexander, Oklahoma Promise Scholarship Coordinator, OSHRE Oklahoma s Promise is a scholarship program that has benefitted Oklahoma students for more than 20 years. Following the passing of Senate Bill 529 from the 2017 legislative session, we
5 have begun a two-year period of program updates. This session will provide an overview of the upcoming changes to the program and an implementation timeline. Penn Campus An Arresting Development: Education and Employment Strategies for Adults and Youthful Offenders -Judy Massad-Carr, Administrative Programs Officer II, Oklahoma Employment Security Commission One in 5 Oklahoman s live as an offender. During this session, subjects that will be covered are resources and solutions for Adults and Youthful Offenders, understanding how felonies and misdemeanors effect future employment, prohibited careers, health and substance abuse and understanding how to maneuver around behavior health issues to reach goals and provide better outcomes. Penn Campus Connect 2 Business OK Career Guide s Newest Component -Erica Harris, OK Career Guide Coordinator, ODCTE Connect 2 Business (C2B) serves business and industry, education and workforce communities and provides tools to match students and adults with local employers and their opportunities. By creating awareness and relationships in communities, C2B gives students and adults a quick, reliable way to find opportunities that align with their interests and skills. Plus, it helps local employers promote and fill internships, apprenticeships, jobs, etc. Conference Center B, Main Building, S. Penn Campus Digital Footprint -Traci Hopper, Grants and Special Projects Coordinator, Moore Norman Technology Center We will explore social media and discuss why, as educators and counselors, we can no longer ignore it. We will cover the reasons why we need to prepare students for the good and bad of social media and the lasting effects their digital footprint can have on their long-term success. Penn Campus Working with Students and Adults on the Autism Spectrum -Joshua Pulos, Sooner Scholar Doctoral Student, The University of Oklahoma This session will create awareness of research- and evidence-based practices educators can use within their classroom to enhance post-secondary employment success for their students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Through identified research, educators will learn specific strategies to enrich practices when working with students with ASD. These practices include (a) individualized, strengths-based transition services and supports; (b) positive career development and early work experience; (c) meaningful collaboration and interagency involvement; (d) family support and expectations; (e) fostering self-determination and independence; (f) social and

This session will address the questions we all what to know about how to prepare our students to meet the needs of our local employers. What technical and soft skills are most important, what do employers want to see on resumes and applications, what are the best strategies for our students to connect and stand out as qualified applicants? Penn Campus An Introduction to Cultural Competence for Educators -Jason Brown, Assistant Superintendent, Norman Public Schools The presenter will review the five basic areas of cultural competence. The presenter will apply the material to individual educators as well as the schools they work in and the educational system as a whole. Conference Center 207, Main Building, S. Penn Campus 1:45 p.m. Non-Traditional Career Paths Women in STEM 2:30 p.m. -Julie Coffee, President, High Impact Management Julie Coffee, an engineer who has worked in the field for 20+ years and who has been a coordinator for the GirlTech mentoring program for the past 5 years, will share points on preparing our female students to thrive in non-traditional careers. She'll leave you with a better understanding of the social and emotional challenges females face starting in adolescence and continuing in the workplace. Intended audience includes STEM educators, career counselors and others influencing female student s career paths. Conference Center A, Main Building, S. Penn Campus Disability Basics -Sharon Baker, Disabilities Services Specialist, ODCTE Sharon Baker will give a brief overview of disabilities including laws, legal documents, prevalence of disabilities and resources. Penn Campus Addressing Behavior in the Classroom -Dr. Gary Duhon, Professor, Oklahoma State University This session will describe how to prepare for and respond to disruptive behaviors in the classroom. Attendees will learn about strategies for prevention as well as approaches to understanding and responding to different behavioral functions. Conference Center C, Main Building, S. Penn Campus Using Pathways as the Foundation for Career Development -Ivy Alford, Director, Director of State Partnerships, SREB This session will provide tools and resources to develop pathways that are developed and marketed so that all students (K-12) and their families are aware of opportunities provided in the

The pathways are used to support guest speakers and field trips in elementary schools and the activities are meaningfully built for middle schools to equally expose all students to pathway options. By ninth grade, the pathway is evident in course selection and participation in outside events. Conference Center D/E, Main Building, S. Penn Campus Programs of Study -Charles Page High School, Sand Springs Let Sand Springs help you put the spring back into the steps your school takes to creating and marketing programs of study for students. Learn how you can establish great communication ties with students while they earn badges and compete for prizes and classroom celebrations. A main point of topic will be discussing and sharing some of the trade specific lessons she teaches for their programs. Secondary teachers can employ a variety of strategies to help students obtain the content knowledge needed to be successful in the class despite their poor reading skills. Penn Campus The Boy Who Carried Bricks -Alton Carter, Director of Youth Ministries, First United Methodist Church Alton Carter, is the author of The Boy Who Carried Bricks, winner of the Oklahoma Book Award for Young Adults, and Aging Out. Carter s first book describes his difficult childhood,
8 and experiences as a foster kid. His second book describes his college and career journeys. In 2015, Carter founded the Alton Carter Inspire Foundation with the goal to assist young people who have lived in foster care, group homes, or DHS facilities with securing a college degree. Alton is director of youth ministries for the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater. Conference Center C, Main Building, S. Penn Campus Cooperative Alliance Update -Dr. Debbie Blanke, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, OSHRE -Dr. Debra Stuart, Vice Chancellor for Educational Partnerships, OSHRE The Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education staff will provide an update about Cooperative Agreements. Penn Campus Special Education Update -Andrea Kunkel, General Counsel, CCOSA/ODSS Learn about the U.S. Supreme Court's new "FAPE" standard and what it means for educators and review new Oklahoma legislation that impacts the education of students with disabilities. Attendees with knowledge of Accuplacer will be encouraged to contribute tips they have found useful and areas of Accuplacer that they find challenging.
