Television shows such as Roots (based on Alex Haley s 1976 book) and Who Do You Think You Are? fueled this interest. In the past, the main sources of information for researching one s background were official records and family recollections. But now there is a new source to find an individual s ethnic or racial ancestry. Genetic analysis is done from a simple swab of the cheek or a saliva sample. For those wanting to dig really deeply into their origins, home-based tests also can trace a person s genetics to the prehistoric past to estimate what small percentage of their DNA is inherited from Neanderthals, our ancient ancestors. Always check a company s fees, reliability rating and privacy policy before submitting your DNA sample. And be prepared for some possible surprises! Searching for your roots Sala Horowitz Neighborhood House Inc. is a nonprofit organization that brings neighbors together to feed the hungry, house the homeless and educate young and old. We strengthen community by providing resources to support self-reliance, economic independence, and dignity in people of all ages and backgrounds. Neighborhood House is a multiservice, multisite organization providing social, emergency and recreational services for individuals and families residing in West and North Portland.

Free. Led by George Laramie. AARP DRIVER SAFETY CLASS Class cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers; payable to the instructor at the first class. FOOT CLINIC 2nd Wednesday of every month This month: Twenty-minute appointments from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 12 Cost: $35 payable to the nurse Skilled foot-care nurse brings a clinic to our center each month. Appointments are required and fill quickly. To schedule foot care, please call SENIOR LAW PROJECT 2nd Tuesday, Sept. 11 4th Tuesday, Sept. 25 Appointments begin at 9 a.m. This service is available if either you or your spouse is 60+ years of age and is a Multnomah County resident. The initial 30-minute consultation is free, regardless of income. Call Friendly House at for an appointment. SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFITS COUNSELING (SHIBA) Trained volunteer counselors answer Medicare and Senior Health Insurance questions in private sessions. First and third Thursdays of the month. This month s clinic is Sept. 20 in the Neighborhood House Senior Center lobby, provided by volunteer nurses. No appointment necessary. Free. LIFE STORIES * Write the story of your amazing life. Remember people, places, events and lessons learned. We will talk and write to share the wisdom gained from our long and eventful lives. 12:30 p.m. Thursdays in the Senior Center. 3 Page 3 Senior Resources Fair Riders Club The Riders Club is a free and open opportunity to enjoy what Portland has to offer by using public transportation. Join us as we continue to explore free and low-cost events around Portland such as concerts, theater and art exhibits. TriMet bus tickets for all Riders Club trips are free, and you will be escorted by our Ride Ambassador, who is trained to assist you. Sign up at the Neighborhood House Senior Center front desk. Join enjoyment coach Carmen Farmer as she helps retirees find fun and fulfillment in life with a free workshop called "Be Your Own Cruise Director: Taking Life From Good to Great." This interactive presentation, given at the Neighborhood House Senior Center, helps seniors explore how options such as volunteerism, parttime encore careers and hobbies can help them feel more fulfilled and experience more enjoyment in life. Ultimately, the end goal is to have more energy, more joy and feel good about who you are and what you re doing. The hourlong seminar will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, inside the Senior Center. Home Instead Senior Care partners with local nonprofit and community organizations to work with local businesses to help purchase and distribute gifts by placing trees and ornaments within their various locations.
