1 Volume 19 Number 2 The official newsletter of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Booster Club September, 2017 President s Thoughts By Vicki Silva September, Yea! Of course this means that hockey is just around the corner. Our annual booster club convention is here and as we call it a family meeting. I am also looking forward to meeting our new players and new members of the coaching staff. My excitement is growing everyday. We are in the process of planning the meet and greet. A great benefit of being a club member. You can get up close and personal with everybody. Soon, we will be talking about parking, food prices, and the new people that sit next to us. I can t wait until we go on trips and cheer our team as we start the race for the cup. As by now most of you have seen the news, or you may already know, that we are having difficulties reconciling the difference between our bank statements and our checking accounts. I am positive that we will reconcile all of these issues. I will keep everyone informed as to the outcome and any resolution. As of this writing nothing has been decided. Let s Go Pens!!! Vicki Trip Report: By Stew Thomas At the board meeting on August 7, the following trip schedule was discussed and approved. 3 Meeting Minutes: By Peggy Johnson The WBSPBC met on August 14, 2017 at the Wilkes-Barre Twp. Fire Co. Vicki Silva, President, called the meeting to order at 7:34 p.m. There were 37 members in attendance. A motion was made by Sharon Sallitt and seconded by Mary Kay Yurkavage to waive the reading of the minutes. All members present were in favor and the motion was passed. Laurie Nealon was unable to give the Treasurer s report as Wendy Koster had not handed over the books to audited yet. A copy of the current minutes is available at the Secretary s table for members to view. RoseAnn Foy reported that there would be no speaker tonight as there are no players available. She asked those members present if they had any suggestions for speakers. One suggestion was for the new Citizens Voice Sports Beat Reporter. If you have any suggestions, contact RoseAnn or any Board member. If anyone has pictures from any of the summer activities sponsored by the WBS Penguins, contact Danielle Baker so that they may be uploaded to the Web. They could have been to the RailRiders game, to Montage Water Park, to any of the parades or events that Tux was participating in, etc. Lisa Mensch is the new Chair of the Scrapbook Committee. If anyone is interested in doing a player scrapbook, there will a sign-up sheet a the Booster Club table. Lisa will assign players ( with the help of Cindy Bartles and Sue Matuella). Michelle Alters has been working on getting donated items for the player s welcome bags. She is looking for suggestions for items for the veteran players who already have the duffle bags. A letter (with letterhead) requesting donated items for a business or organization maybe obtained from Michelle. Vicki stated that a date will be announced later for the Meet the Players mixer after the team is announced and the roster has been set. Vicki will have to set the date with the coach. She stated that she will check around with the different venues to see what prices she can find. She stressed that Genetti s appears to be the best. Rose Guasto has some items of merchandise left over to sell. If you are interested, see her at the general meeting. If you have any suggestions of items you would like to see the Booster Club selling, please let Rose know and she will see if we are able to get that item to sell. Rose will be checking into new items and getting the Board s okay to place orders. All items must be paid for in advance. Some ideas were tossed around pertaining to the new Booster Club Pin. Since Pittsburgh won back to back Stanley Cups, it was thought to have 2 Stanley Cups on the pin. If anyone else has any ideas, please hand them in. We have someone that can draw up your idea. Tom Thackara and his Audit Committee (Kathy Carrera and Anne Flasser) are hoping to get the audit done. Wendy did not hand over the books prior to going away on vacation. Ann Flasser will plan to have the Christmas Cookies for the team delivered the same way as last year. They can be brought to the Wilkes- Barre Twp. Fire Hall for the Dec. general meeting or they can be delivered to the Toyota Sportsplex from December 11-13th ( Mon.-Wed). Ann and her committee will pack them on Thursday. Vicki stated that the Make-A-Wish Foundation will again be the charity the Booster Club has chosen for the Parade of Trees. Kathy Thomas, has agreed to take charge of the Daily Number Ticket fundraiser again this year. The tickets should be ready to hand out at the Sept. General Meeting. These will be for the month of November. 3 We need sponsors for the next 2 batches of daily number tickets. If you are interested contact Kathy. Kathy is still working on getting a date for the Art N Vino night. She may have the date by the end of the week. check on the Facebook site. The new picture is that of the Market St. Bridge or a barn. RAFFLE WINNER The winner of the 50/50 jackpot of $55 was Doreen Keeler. Autographed Hockey Stick The winner of the autographed hockey stick donated by Melissa Hossage was Peggy Johnson. Door Prizes Michael Dean Perry (Akron Rubber Ducks) : Lenny Lenkowski Insulated RailRiders Mug: Melissa Huffey Penguin Slippers: Kathy Carrera 2 Penguin Figurines: Mary Ann Wassell Small Stuffed Penguin: Kristen Golden Large Stuffed Penguin: Michelle Alters Penguin Candle Holder: Debbie Charnichko The next meeting of the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins Booster Club will be held on September 11, 2017 at 7:30 PM at the Wilkes-Barre Twp. 5 Welcome Committee The season is just around the corner and what that means is it s time to start getting ready for the player s return. This year we will be doing something similar to last year where the returning players will get the duffel bag along with a special item such as a charging bank or wall charging station for travel or other items of sorts. All new players will receive a duffel bag, a contour pillow and a sweatshirt blanket. By the summer transactions taking place it appears that most of our team will be fresh faces. If anyone has any ideas of what we can get the veteran players and staff members please let me know. You can me at michellealters@comcast,net. As for donations if you know any local business that would be willing to donate at least 40 individual items, please let me know and I can pass along the Request for Donations letter. This year the club was gracious enough to donate money to purchase items for the bags, but if anyone would also like to donate items such as: hand sanitizer, snack foods, toiletries, or anything else you feel the guys could use it would be greatly appreciated. Cash is always good as well since I get a lot of their snack foods from Sam s Club. If anyone would like to be a part of the committee there will be a sign-up sheet at the next General Meeting. If you cannot make the meeting but would still like to help, please let me know. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your summer!!! Trip Schedule Saturday, October 28th, Day trip to Bridgeport Friday, Nov. 17th to Sunday, Nov. 19th, Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Chicago Blackhawks in Pittsburgh Friday, January 12th to Sunday January 14th, Belleville and Laval (New CANADA trips) Friday February 9th to Sunday, February 11th, A Weekend in Providence, RI with 2 games Friday March 23rd to Saturday March 24th, Utica and Binghamton Saturday, April 14th, Lehigh Valley (Kids Trip) 5

6 Time to renew your membership in the WBS Penguins Booster Club. For a mere price of only $15 you will receive 11 months (July 1 to June 30th) of functions, the newsletter and club meetings where you can meet and mingle with all your favorite team players. You can renew anytime starting this month by mailing in your dues or at the September Booster Club general meeting. Also, just a reminder if you have any youth members, please let me know who they are and their birthdays.. Thanks!!!! Dan Mensch, Membership Director Due to all the requests for the scrapbook projects, I will be trying to assign the players that you requested on a first come first serve basis. Members who have done players in the past will get first choice of who they want to do, but if there are more than one request for player it will the fall to seniority of the member. Meaning whoever has been a member longer will get who they chose. Then the next person will have a chance to pick another player. When a member does not care who they get, I will assign a player to that member. Please do not request the same player/ position if you have done a scrapbook in the past. This will give someone else a chance to do a different player. I believe this is only fair to all Booster Club member who want to do a scrapbook. Remember, also that your dues must be paid in full. You may contact me at or Leave a message or a text, if I do not answer. You may also reach me at Thank you for all your help and understanding in assigning players for this hockey season. LET S GO PENS!!!! Sincerely, Lisa Mensch The Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins BC is in need for some person/persons or business etc. who would like to sponsor the Club s Daily Number Raffle Tickets for the coming year. The cost is about $75 and your name or business name would be listed on the tickets. If you are interested or know of someone who would like to be a sponsor please contact Kathy Thomas. Thanks!!!! A little reminder to all booster club members. The Daily Number Tickets for November will be available at the September General Meeting. Please take some to sell. Your assistance in this fundraiser would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! It is time to start thinking about the logo for the new BC pin. If anyone has any ideas or knows of anyone who has an idea for a new pin design please submit your suggestions to Dan Mensch or any board member. You do not have to be an artist or know how to draw. Just a simple idea 6
