That is the first day that children 18 and under can ride free for the summer on Topeka Metro s fixed-route buses through Aug. 15, This will be the fourth year that Topeka Metro has sponsored the Kids Ride Free summertime promotion, which offers youth the opportunity to visit kid-friendly businesses in Topeka such as the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, Blaisdell Family Aquatic Center, Gage Bowl and the Topeka Zoo, to name a few. The promotion also encourages youth to ride and learn more about public transit. Every year the program has grown. Topeka Metro general manager, Susan Duffy, said, The first year we unveiled the program, we had 2,000 kids riding the bus. The next year, it expanded to an incredible amount of 45,000. We went into the third year with a count of about 49,000, and in 2015, that number grew to 56,000. It is a very successful initiative, and parents and kids love it. To learn more about routes and other information, check out the Topeka Metro website at topekametro.org, or by calling (785) Topeka West High School and the 21st Century grant will again be hosting HS 101 for incoming 9th graders. The session will be MONDAY, JUNE 6TH - THURSDAY, JUNE 9TH FROM NOON TO 4 PM. Sessions will include college and career information, study skills, team-building, and Topeka West history and information. Incoming 9th graders will receive an application from their middle school, can pick one up from Topeka West starting in mid-may or may contact Becky Svaty to enroll or for additional information. Her number is and is rsvaty@tps501.org. THERE IS NO COST TO ATTEND THIS SESSION.
