1 Classification College Recruiting Checklist Freshman Year Make a list of colleges you would like to attend (10-20) and send them to your team coach Make your player profile and send to your team manager and team coach (see Player Files Austin Texans College Profile on the Austin Texans website for template) Be involved school activities (student government, NHS, clubs, community service etc. as they look good on your resume) Focus on grades! Communicate with coaches about upcoming showcases for the year Start building a highlight video Meet with your team coach about your list of schools to classify the major schools of interest. Attend College Night for the Austin Texans Soccer Club Attend any combine in the area including the Austin Texans College Combine Attend 4-5 showcases a year (make sure to write at least 10 coaches for each showcase) Go on unofficial visits to colleges as much as possible throughout the year Attend College ID camps during the summer at schools of interest Sophomore Year Update your list of colleges of interest (list should contain at least schools) Update your player profile of any new information (awards, GPA, PSAT scores etc) Focus on grades! Fill college questionnaires for prospective recruits Stay in communication with coaches about upcoming showcases for the year Sign up for the PSAT (add scores to your player profile) Register for the NCAA eligibility center at Attend College Night for the Austin Texans Soccer Club Attend any combine in the area including the Austin Texans College Combine Update your highlight tape Attend 4-5 showcases a year (make sure to write at least 10 coaches for each showcase) Go on unofficial visits to colleges as much as possible throughout the year Attend College ID camps during the summer at schools of interest
2 Update your list of colleges of interest (list should be narrowed down to 5-10 schools in the Fall) Sign up for AP classes if possible as these will count towards college credits Update your player profile of any new information (awards, GPA, SAT scores etc.) and Focus on Grades! Keep in touch with coaches once a month throughout the year Fill out college questionnaires for prospective recruits and visit college fairs Sign up for the SATS and ACT ( Add scores to player profile Stay in communication with coaches about upcoming showcases and interest in schools Obtain at least 3 letters of recommendations For financial aid, fill out FAFSA form ( and attend workshops Apply for the NCAA Clearinghouse ( By the spring season narrow down your college list to a Top 5-10 List Attend College Night for the Austin Texans Soccer Club and combine Ask your high school counselor to send an official transcript to the NCAA Eligibility Center after completing your junior year. Attend 4-5 showcases a year (make sure to write at least 10 coaches for each showcase) Go on unofficial visits to colleges as much as possible throughout the year Attend College ID camps during the summer at schools of interest Improve your SAT/ACT scores if possible by retaking the tests (Dec is the latest for testing) Update your list of colleges of interest (list should be narrowed down to 5 schools at most) Stay in communication with schools at least once a month and continue to go on unofficial visits Starting July 1 st of your senior you may start going on official visits to schools Sign up for AP classes if possible as these will count towards college credits Update your player profile of any new information (awards, GPA, SAT scores etc.) Focus on grades! Apply for the College/Universities of choice Signing day is in February, however seniors can sign a National Letter of Intent until August 1st Finalize recommendation letters, financial aid applications (Jan 1), and essay topics Obtain final transcripts from your counselor (when applicable) Make sure you meet all deadlines for applications, housing, scholarships, etc. Send final transcripts to the NCAA Clearinghouse Obtain your summer packet from your school and prepare for preseason!
3 Tips to Remember Coaches are watching your development throughout high school at camps, in school and on the field Standouts are proactive, it s never too early for YOU to write a letter or make a call to coaches DI and DII coaches can t personally contact you until July 1 st after your Junior year, but YOU can contact them DIII and NAIA coaches can contact you at anytime Important to do be familiar with the school both athletically and academically If you haven t heard from DI coaches, start reaching out to DII, DIII, NAIA programs If you are considering NAIA program, register with NAIA Eligibility Center Contact coaches at least once a month starting your junior year Respond to EVERY coach, even if you are not interested in the school Every you receive from a college coach forward to your team coach and the college coordinator: JD Cochran for girls - jdcochran@austintexanssc.com Jose Reyes for boys - jreyes@austintexanssc.com Recruiting Rules for Division I Freshman and Sophomore Year Recruiting Material: You may receive brochures for camps and questionnaires Telephone Calls: You can make unlimited calls to the coach at your own expense, the coach cannot call you Off Campus Contact: Not allowed Recruiting Material: You may begin to receive recruiting materials and information from the coach on September 1 st of your junior year Telephone Calls: You can make unlimited calls to the coach at your own expense, You can receive one call per week starting July 1st AFTER your Junior year Off Campus Contact: Not allowed
