1 Atkins Elementary School Parents of all children in grades Pre-K-5 attending Atkins Elementary School are invited to a Meet the Teacher Night on Monday, August 7th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. School will begin August 10th at 8:30 a.m. The building will open daily at 7:30 a.m., and any student arriving before 8:15 a.m. should report to the gym. At 8:15 a.m., students will go to their classroom and the tardy bell will ring at 8:30. Anyone arriving after 8:30 a.m. will be considered tardy. Parent pick-up and first bus students will be released at 3:15. Classroom assignments will be posted on Monday, August 7th. Parents of kindergarten students and those students new to the Atkins community are encouraged to come to the school to enroll their child by August 1, To enter kindergarten, students must be 5 years old on or before September 30, A child s physical form, immunization record, and birth certificate are required for enrollment. Atkins Elementary School s office hours are 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please call the school at if you have questions. Chilhowie Elementary School Chilhowie Elementary School will hold Back-To-School-Night on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Parents are invited to meet with teachers and visit classrooms. Registration for Kindergarten will be held each workday beginning Monday, July 31, 2017, from 9:00-3:00 p.m. Parents are reminded to bring a copy of the immunizations record, birth certificate, physical form and any other pertinent data. Registration for Kindergarten and other new students coming to Chilhowie Elementary School should be completed prior to the opening day of school on Thursday, August 10, Pre- Kindergarten and Kindergarten teachers will be scheduling times to meet with parents. Class lists will be posted on the bus loading side of the building on Monday, August 7 after 3:00 p.m. School will begin Thursday, August 10, 2017, at 8:25 a.m. Marion Elementary School The staff and faculty of Marion Elementary School are excited about the new school year! Class lists will be posted at the main entrance on Friday, August 4th, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. Our Open House is scheduled for Monday, August 7th from 2:00 p.m. 5:45 p.m. All parents and students are encouraged to drop by the school to meet their teacher and visit their classrooms. Students are welcome to bring their school supplies during Open House. Parents of children who will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2017 are eligible to begin kindergarten. Parents who have not yet registered their child for kindergarten should come into the school as soon as possible to complete the registration paperwork. The school must have the child s physical form, immunization record, and birth certificate to enroll a student. If you have questions about the new school year,

Oak Point Elementary School We look forward to another exciting year of learning at Oak Point Elementary School. Back to School Registration and Open House for students and their parents will be held on Monday, August 7 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. This will be an excellent time to meet your child s teacher and discuss the upcoming school year. Classroom supply lists, information about the school, and information about your child s new grade level will be distributed at Open House. Parents are encouraged to register their kindergarteners and any students new to Oak Point Elementary School before school starts on August 10. Please bring a copy of the immunization record, birth certificate, physical form, and any other pertinent forms when you register your child. Office hours are 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday prior to school starting on August 10. Homeroom teacher assignments will be posted on the Oak Point Elementary School front doors at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4. School supply lists are already available on the school website ( at the Marion Wal-Mart, and other local businesses selling school supplies. Rich Valley Elementary School Registration for kindergarten and other new students coming to Rich Valley Elementary School should be completed prior to the opening of school on Thursday, August 10, When parents come to register their child, they should bring their child's birth certificate, and physical examination report, and immunization record. Any parent or guardian who needs information regarding registration should call the school at All students and parents are invited to attend a Back to School open house on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Room assignments will be posted at this time. Students and parents may visit classrooms, meet the teachers, and find out the school supplies the child will need for the school year. Parents interested in volunteering or helping with school activities such as Fall Festival, please stop by the Library the night of open house to receive more information. Rich Valley Elementary School hours will remain the same as last year. Any students arriving before 8:20 are to report to the cafeteria. Students will report to their classroom by 8:20, and the tardy bell will ring at 8:30. Anyone arriving after 8:30 will be considered tardy and must check in at the office. The end of school day bell will ring at 3:10. Students riding first bell buses will be released at that time. The bell for parent pickup and bus duty students will ring at 3:13.

3 Saltville Elementary School An Open House will be held at Saltville Elementary School on Tuesday, August 8 th from 3:00-6:00 p.m. This is a great time for parents and students to visit classrooms and meet the teachers to ensure a smooth transition back to school. The PTO and SES staff will be in the gymnasium to provide information and assistance with classroom assignments. If your child is a pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, or new student, please bring your child s birth certificate, immunization record, and health examination record to the school if you have not already done so. These items are required for a child to attend any public school in the state of Virginia. School will begin Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 8:30. We look forward to seeing you! Sugar Grove Elementary School Registration for kindergarten and all new students who will be attending Sugar Grove Elementary School should be completed prior to the first day of school. Parents registering new students will need to bring the child s birth certificate, school physical, and immunization record. Chilhowie Middle School Chilhowie Middle School students will report to school and pay fees on opening day, Thursday, August 10, Those students who are new to the Chilhowie area should come to the school prior to August 10 th to register and arrange their schedules for the school year. The school office will be open from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. each weekday before school opens. An open house for students and their parents is scheduled for Tuesday, August 8, 2017, from 4:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. An orientation for rising 6 th grade students will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the gym. Northwood Middle School Northwood Middle School will host 6 th grade orientation on August 7, Parents and students are asked to meet in the auditorium at 5:00 p.m., followed by collection of fees. Back-to-School night for 7 th and 8 th grade students will be held on August 8, Parents and students are invited to drop in between the hours of 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. to pay fees, fill out required paperwork and visit teachers in their

4 classrooms. Homeroom lists will be posted on the front doors. Parents will pay fees in the homeroom teacher s room. Marion Middle School Registration, acceptance of fees, and dissemination of schedules will be conducted in the main office on Monday, August 7, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Student homeroom lists will be posted on the main MMS entry doors on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. Orientation and Open House has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Incoming sixth, seventh and eighth grade students may meet with their educational teams during this time. Sixth grade students and/or new students will be called to the auditorium at 6:00 p.m. for a presentation by the principal. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to meet teachers and learn what their child will need for the school year. Parents will also have an opportunity to handle fees, fill out paperwork, and receive schedules. Parents of students new to Smyth County are urged to register their children as soon as possible. School for the school year will begin on Thursday, August 10, Chilhowie High School Back-to-School Open House will be held on Tuesday, August 8 th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Student schedules will be mailed to all students on July 17 th, Schedule changes may be made according the following schedule: rising seniors, July 24 th from 8:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m., rising juniors on July 25 th from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., rising sophomores on July 26 th and rising freshmen on July 27 th from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at CHS. Students who will be in the 9 th grade or new to Chilhowie High School, will have an orientation in the auditorium from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 7 th. This orientation is an excellent time to pick up schedules, meet teachers, and tour the building. Transfer students new to the system should come to the school prior to August 3 rd to arrange their schedule for the school year. The office will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each weekday before school opens. The VHSL fall sports rules meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium on Tuesday, August 8 th. All fall sports athletes and at least one parent are required to attend. A locker fee of $5.00 will be paid during homeroom period on August 10 th. All other fees will be paid in individual classes. For other information, parents may call the school at Marion Senior High School Marion Senior High School students should report to their homerooms on Thursday, August 10, 2017, at 8:20 am. Final schedules will be given to students on the

5 first day of school in homerooms. Schedule changes may be made on the following dates: seniors, July 25; juniors and sophomores, July 26; and freshmen, July 27. New students are encouraged to register at the school on Aug. 1 and 2 between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. An Open House is scheduled for students and parents on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Freshmen orientation will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. An abbreviated class schedule will be followed by students and parents from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Students and parents will be given the opportunity to meet teachers and be made aware of course requirements and supplies needed. Also, supply lists will be posted on the windows at the front porch of the school. All students need to pay a $5.00 locker fee in the cafeteria during the Open House or to homeroom teachers the first three days of school. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors may pay their $20 annual Chromebook fee in the cafeteria the night of Open House or to the homeroom teachers. All other fees will be paid in specific classes where fees are required. Northwood High School Northwood High School students and their parents are invited to attend the annual Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, August 8, Freshman orientation will begin in the auditorium at 6:00 p.m. This orientation will provide incoming freshmen and their parents an opportunity to receive information regarding NHS policies. At 6:30 p.m., all NHS students and parents will be able to meet the teachers during an abbreviated daily schedule. At this time, the teachers will be available to provide information about their classes. There will be NO schedule changes during Backto-School Night. Schedules will be mailed out the week of July 17 th, Any student that has a question about their schedule or wants to change their schedule can come on the following dates: July 31 st - rising seniors, August 1 st - rising juniors, August 2 nd - rising sophomores, and August 3 rd - rising freshman; from 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. in the guidance office. A locker fee of $5.00 should be paid to the homeroom teacher on the first day of school. Other fees should be paid in the respective classes of which they are required. A Senior Parking Fee of $20 per year is available for parking on the upper level lot of the school parking area on a first come first served basis and can be acquired in the main office. Smyth Career and Technology Center The faculty and staff of the Smyth Career and Technology Center will welcome new and returning students and their parents on Monday evening, August 7, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Prospective students and their parents are welcome to tour the Smyth Career and Technology Center and meet with individual program instructors to obtain information in regard to course content and dual enrollment opportunities. Lab fees may also be paid at this time.
