The SAME annual training, technical and networking extravaganza, known as the Joint Engineering Training Conference (JETC) was held this year from May at the America Center, St. Louis, Missouri. With more than 2,500 registered attendees, this was the place to be when making conference plans! Some of those attending the JETC 2012 from the Jacksonville Post included officers and directors: Mike Blount, Paul Grosskruger, CAPT John Heinzel, Ron Hilton, Charles Khan, Doug McCutcheon, Mike Panczykowski, Dwyn Taylor, Lisa Thoele, Alan Watt, Larry Willis and Eugene Yerkes. At least 12 other members also participated. More than 40 Sustaining Members of the Jacksonville Post were also part of the 300 exhibitors. To kick off the conference on Tuesday night, a Mentoring event was followed by the popular Icebreaker gettogether. Buses picked up attendees at each hotel and the conference center and transported them to the Cityy Museum. p Winding slides, tunnels, cavern exhibits and architectural castoffs were located at every turn, providing conversational pieces for attendees. 2 Continued from Page 1 ones braved going down the slides and crawling through narrow tunnels that connected levels of the City Museum. The Mentor event included d an MC and six speakers, was a chance to recognize Fellows and Young Members. The 1,700 Icebreaker attendees also got to unwind at the fun and surrealistic atmosphere of the City Museum after a jam-packed day filled with Committees & Councils Luncheon and Meetings; Military Education & Training Workshop; Mentoring event; and Exhibit Hall setup. This was an excellent and well attended event. Opening session began with welcomes from 2012 JETC Co-Chairs Glenn Cherry and Cheryl Majka. They thanked all the 2012 Volunteers and reminded everyone to take advantage of the Technical Sessions and tours and earn the PDH credits. RADM Christopher h Mossey, CEC, USN, PE, SAME President provided remarks. He discussed the SAME Engineering Camps and said that 214 students attended the three camps last year with 100 camp volunteers. SAME has 44 Student Posts with 3,000 student members. SAME Posts awarded over $1.2 million in scholarships last year. During the Opening Session, Tim Sanford, 2012 JETC Program Chair, talked about the six Tracks for the Technical Sessions and that the bar code on the registration badge is scanned for PDH credit. (The PDH credits are available after the conference by downloading from the SAME web site.) Eric Greitens, Ph.D., a Navy Seal deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and Southeast Asia, gave the Keynote Address. His presentation ti explained the training and activities of the Navy Seals and talked about the purpose of establishing The Mission Continues. In lieu of a speaker gift, HQ SAME provide Dr. Greitens with a $5,000 check for The Mission Continues. He is also the author of the book The Heart and the Fist and signed copies. The spacious Exhibit Hall welcomed conference attendees for two full days at the America s Center. Nearly 2,400 conference attendees browsed though the wide variety of exhibitor booths. Partnerships and new connections were made in the fields of engineering, architecture, construction, environmental sustainability and facility management. For the first time, JETC opened the Exhibitor Demonstration ti Theater to give exhibitors a greater opportunity to demonstrate their services and products to attendees. The Exhibitor Demonstration Theater allowed exhibiting companies to spend more time with attendees by showing them presentations regarding their offerings in a more educational setting, without leaving the show floor. The Honors Luncheon recognizes outstanding individuals and groups for their contributions to the Society and to the military engineer profession. Awards are presented to SAME member organizations and to individuals representing the uniformed services. SAME Executive Director Bob Wolff, Ph.D., P.E. F.SAME introduced the honorees while Rear Adm. Sven Rodenbeck, P.E., F.SAME, USPHS; Rear Adm. Ronald J Rábago, P.E., M. SAME, U.S. Coast Guard; Maj. Gen. Todd T. Semonite, P.E., M.SAME, USA; Brig. Gen. Tim Green, USAF; and Rear Adm. Christopher J. Mossey Commander, M.SAME, CEC, USN, presented the awards. One of the highlights of the conference is the Post Awards Breakfast and Annual Business Meeting because SAME Posts learn the outcome of the Streamer Awards in recognition of superb performance and achievement. Robert D. Bob Wolff, Ph.D., P.E., F.SAME, SAME Executive Director conducted the Annual SAME Business Meeting. Ballots were cast to vote on the changes in SAME governance. A significant component of the proposed governance change is the establishment of a Uniformed Services Advisory Group (USAG), comprised of the Engineering Service Chiefs of the five uniformed services. He said that out of a total of 108 Posts (99 in the United States), 25 Field Chapters and 43 Student Chapters, 42 Posts are Distinguished in Top: SAME Executive Director Bob Wolff, Ph.D., P.E., SAME has four partners: IFMA, CMAA, DBIA F.SAME, introduced the honorees. The grand ballroom presented the Post Streamer Awards to the deserving was well-decorated with beautiful bouquets of Posts. Mike Blount, South Atlantic RVP announced the fresh flowers consisting of red and white roses, South Atlantic Region Streamer Awards and CAPT John Heinzel accepted the Jacksonville Post Streamer Awards from RADM Christopher Mossey. The incoming Society President was then sworn in and an old tradition of passing the gavel was performed. The SAME President Anthony F. Tony Leketa, P.E., F.SAME, SES (Ret.) Parsons, accepted the gavel from Rear Adm. Christopher Mossey. With a strong gavel strike, Leketa adjourned the meeting. The day continued with four technical sessions with six tracks each with classes ranging from Energy Considerations in Contingency Operations to Tools for Success and Growth to Current Environmental Challenges and Opportunities Impacting the Department of Defense. The conference concluded with the Society Ball and Reception Dinner--a celebratory conclusion of the four-day SAME national conference. The Millennium Hotel St. Louis Grand Ballroom served as the grand red and white carnations and other colorful blooms. The day after the ball, these flower centerpieces were gifted to veterans receiving care at the John Cochran Division of the Department of Veterans Affairs St. Louis Healthcare System. During the ball, Tony Leketa, SAME President, was introduced and provided brief remarks. Cheryl Majka, co-chair 2012 JETC, provided brief remarks and introduced John Moossazadeh, Co - Chair of 2013 JETC, who presented a brief video of San Diego and the 2013 JETC. All in all the JETC 2012 was a fantastic event. Stay tuned for the 2014 JETC to be hosted by the Jacksonville Post. 4 Promoting Achievement through When you support the various SAME Jax Post functions throughout the year, especially the annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, you are making a difference in young adult lives. The Jax Post appreciates your participation and generosity. Congratulations now go to both high school and college students who are seeking futures in engineering, the sciences and other venues. The scholarship recipients include: High School Dependent, Engineering and Architecture - Nathan Lesser; High School Non-Dependent, Engineering and Architecture - Phillip Smiley and Vincent Stippler; College Dependent, Other - Sarah Hess, Ellen Merrill, Taylor Nocera, Allison Schaefer and Morgan Thie; College Non-Dependent, Engineering and Architecture - Malcolm Ammon, Sophia Cain, Blanca Franco and Gabriel Todaro. Nathan Lesser Stanton College Prep Leeser earned a GPA of 3.75 while taking all advanced placement courses in economics, physics, chemistry, computer programming g and calculus. Since January 2011, Leeser also attended Honors College and University of Central Florida earning credits for mechanical engineering courses. He has worked as a lifeguard and has done a host of volunteer work at such places as the Betty Griffith and St. Francis houses. He plans to work in the mechanical engineering field. Phillip Smiley W.M. Raines High School Smiley also took a host of advanced placement courses in the sciences while playing varsity football and baseball for Raines. His interests revolve around mechanical engineering and will be attending the University of Florida. Smiley is also an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Scholar, Take Stock Scholar and earned the multi-cultural achievement award. Vincent Stippler Christ Church Academy Stippler is known as a student who always gives 110%--he is a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, salutatorian of his class with a 4.46 GPA, and part of the engineering team who won the USACE Engineering Career Day top honors in Throughout junior and senior high school he was part of his school s football team and during high school, he was part of the academic decathlon team. Stippler plans to major in civil engineering g at the University of Central Florida. Sarah Hess Spring Hill College Hess is majoring in biochemistry with plans to be a leader in the medical field. Hess is a Dominican College Scholarship recipient, a treasurer of Spring Hill s Medical American Student Association, and is a member of Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority. Hess has been a summer camp counselor for three years in a row. Ellen Merrill University of Florida Merrill is majoring in criminology with plans to work for a large government agency and ultimately become an intelligence analyst or international agent. Merrill is part of UF s intramural indoor and sand volleyball teams and is certified as an advanced open water scuba diver. She has worked part-time as a childcare specialist for both the 91 st Street Community Group and Christ Community Church. Taylor Nocera Auburn University Nocera is majoring in psychology and is a member of the Auburn University President s and Dean s lists, the Tau Sigma Honors Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and won the Academic Excellence Award in a Sorority. Allison Schaefer University of Florida Schaefer is a psychology py major who plans to study the research side, go to grad school and develop new methods of clinical psychology that will help autistic patients. Schaefer is the editor of Elan Literary Magazine, a writer/actor for the Issue Based Theater Troupe and is the ecorepresentative for the Inter-Residence Hall Association. Schaefer is also basic life support certified and has worked as a lifeguard, team coach for YMCA and the City of Jacksonville. Continued on page 5 4
5 Promoting Achievement through Continued from page 4 Moran Thie Florida Gulf Coast University Thie is majoring in Hospitality Management and is still exploring the specific area to specialize in either Spa or Event management. For three summers, she has worked as a camp instructor. Thie is a Gulf Coast Humane Society volunteer and is on the Dean s list. Malcom Ammons University of Florida Ammons is majoring in Civil Engineering with plans to eventually have his own firm that specializes in design and maintenance of bridges, dams, water structures and other structures. Ammons is an AICE diploma recipient. i Sophia Cain University of Florida As an architecture major, Cain plans to design homes and buildings, with her main focus being on churches because of the social ground they provide for a community. Cain is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society and is a Merit scholar. She placed first in her junior year of high school in the State Latin Forum Model Competition and was awarded outstanding achievement in theory of knowledge and visual art competitions. Bianca Franco University of North Florida Franco is majoring in civil engineering with the desire to contribute to the science that is the backbone of our society and meet the new demands of the 21 st century. Franco is on UNF s Dean s List, is a member of the SAME Jax Post UNF Student Chapter and the Orange Park Toastmaster s Club and volunteers at the First Coast No More Homeless Pets and Ana s Angels Pet Rescue. All of the preceding students were awarded $1, scholarship to their respective schools. Atkins Scholarship, Engineering and Architecture Kelly Pinho - Fleming Island High School Pinho graduated from the Advanced International Certificate of Education Program at Fleming Island High School where she maintained a 3.97 (out of 4.0) GPA. Pinho has been an officer and member of the National Honor Society, a Fleming Island High School principal scholar, and earned Youth and Team Leadership Awards. Pinho has been accepted to the University of Florida where she plans to study Biomedical Engineering. This Named Scholarship is sponsored by Atkins, a sustaining member and global engineering firm. Atkins has generously provided $5,000 for the scholarship which will be provided to UF on Pinho s behalf during the next three years of her education. The 13 scholarship winners will receive a total of $24,500 for the 2012 school year. Congratulations to these fine students and their parents. The Jacksonville Post is proud to award them and encourage future achievement. Gabriel Todaro University of North Florida As a civil engineering major, Todaro s ultimate goal is to create and build in a responsible way in order to create a better world for humanity. Todaro is the secretary for the SAME Jax Post UNF Student Chapter, is a volunteer for Relay for Life and tutors students in physics. Also on the UNF Dean s List, Todaro assists Dr. Brown, UNF Professor, in his research part-time. July
6 Pacheco Shares Emergency Preparedness and Incident Management Tactics at June Meeting CAPT John Heinzel, CEC, NAVFAC Southeast, President, Jacksonville Post, presided over the joint luncheon meeting held on June 19, 2012 with 60 persons in attendance. CAPT Heinzel introduced the luncheon speaker, Clay Pacheco, FPEM, representing AMEC who shared Emergency Management, Needs and Opportunities. Pacheco is a 15 year veteran of emergency preparedness and incident management both in the private sector and County government. He serves as Florida Director of Emergency Management for AMEC in their Carmichael Ave, Jacksonville, location. Until May 2012, Mr. Pacheco served as the Deputy Director for the Jacksonville Florida Fire and Rescue Department s Emergency Preparedness Division. His duties included day-to-day Division Operations and was responsible for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). As such, he is an expert in all aspects of planning, response, recovery and emergency operations. Pacheco managed all training and exercise programs including: Incident Command System (ICS), Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP), Continuity Planning, Catastrophic Preparedness Planning, EOC Position Specific Training and Incident Management Team (IMT) Training. Pacheco discussed the following: Hazard Analysis, Corporate Incident Management Teams, Incident Command Systems, Hazard Analysis Clay Pacheco, Florida Director Emergency Management AMEC including Wind, Storm Surge and Flooding. He showed various storm damage slides with maps of hurricane tracks in Jacksonville from Pacheco also reviewed details of a Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan and how the Incident Management Team Concept was utilized in Jacksonville during such events as the Super Bowl, T2 Explosion, Berkman Collapse, Tropical Storm Fay, H1N1 and the Florida/Georgia game. Pacheco focused on objectives, strategies and tactics and how Assignment of Resources, EM Training and Exercises are an important part of Logistical Response Planning. In thanks for his informative presentation, CAPT Heinzel presented Pacheco with a Jacksonville Post Coffee Mug at the conclusion of the program. Looking for a Way to Make a Difference?
