1 Arizona Section Newsletter February 2018 Arizona Section Manager, Rick Paquette W7RAP Superstition Superfest: The Superstition hamfest was held on December 3rd at Mesa Community College. The weather threatened at first, but all turned out well by 9 AM. A good crowd of hams and sellers attended, and lots of good bargains were seen. At the ARRL booth, Southwestern Division Vice- Director Ned Sterns was on-hand to receive the donation from the Arizona Repeater Association of $2500 in support of the ARRL's Spectrum Defense Fund. This marked the 4th year in a row that the ARA has donated this amount, and when it was received by Headquarters, they in turn awarded the ARA the "Hiram Percy Maxim" Diamond award for their continued support. An article and picture denoting the event graced the pages of this month's QST magazine. Left to Right: Rick Paquette W7RAP, Mike Montalvo KF7MBK, Mike Boger W7IJ, Dennis Bietry KE7EJF, James Wasson N7ELL, Ned Stearns AA7A, Erv Heimbuck K0OTZ, and Brian McCarthy AK7F. Thunderbird Hamfest: Kicking off the new year was the Superstition Hamfest on January 13 th in Phoenix. Excellent weather added to the enjoyment of a large crowd and a near record number of buyers and sellers. A lively discussion arose at the ARRL Section Manager s meeting, discussing the proposed changes to the ARES program by the ARRL. A number of discussion points were forwarded up to ARRL regarding issues associated with the proposals.

2 Quartzfest Specialty Convention: The annual Quartzfest hamfest began on January 21 st in the desert south of Quartzsite, AZ. The week-long activities included over a hundred presentations and activities, and all of them were excellent. We were treated to a open-forum presentation by Dick Norton, our ARRL Southwestern Division Director, with topics ranging from the latest happenings at the recent ARRL Board Of Directors meeting, to the good and bad points of the still-in-work Amateur Radio Parity Act, and the recent changes proposed to some of our ARRL programs such as ARES and the Official Observer Program. Dick's talk was attended by over 400 members, and was a great booster to all concerned hams. The Convention was attended by a record crowd of over 850, and continues to be one of the biggest events in all of Arizona. Quartzfest photos from James Pastorfield KB7TBT Section Emergency Coordinator, Dennis Bietry KE7EJF Over the last 6 or so months, we have seen people have to bug out to avoid hurricanes, floods, wildfires and even mud slides. If your family had to bug out today because of a disaster, do you have them prepared? Do you have go bags prepared for you family including the family pet? Do you have evacuation destinations identified? If your family isn t safe and out of harm s way, you can t be a reliable dedicated communicator. Now is the time to make sure they are prepared. You will find lots of information at It might also be a great topic at your next ham club meeting. Local Government Liaison, Virgil Silhanek K7VZ The Arizona State Legislature kicked off it s Second Regular Session of the Fifty-third Legislature on January 8 th, While no Amateur Radio specific bills have been introduced, we are monitoring anything that may impact our hobby. As expected, the hot topic of texting while driving did have a bill introduced prohibiting the practice in SB1261. The good news is it appears they have added language exempting Amateur Radio. SB1261 Texting While Driving: Prohibition C. THIS SECTION DOES NOT APPLY TO: 2. AN OPERATOR WHO IS LICENSED BY THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION WHILE OPERATING A RADIO FREQUENCY DEVICE OTHER THAN A PORTABLE WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICE. We need everyone s help monitoring federal, state, and local governments so texting while driving prohibitions don t slip

3 through with language that bans mobile Amateur Radio usage. Details of the bill can be viewed at this link: State Government Liaison, Thomas Boza NE7X Arizona Section, State Government Liaison, Thomas Boza NE7X, was awarded the "President's Service Award" and "40 years of continuous membership" by the Central Arizona DX Association. Recognized for his service as ARCA representative and for his activities in assuring that a certain portion of the Arizona Amateur Radio license plate fees are returned to the ham community. The award was presented by CADXA President, Lee Finkel KY7M, at the CADXA banquet on January 20th which had over 80 members, spouses and guests in attendance. The banquet presentation was by Dr. Laura Tohe, daughter of a Navajo code talker, who presented Armed With Our Language, We Went to War: The Navajo Code Talkers. Lee Finkel KY7M and Tom Boza NE7X Quartzfest First Contacts We had a great week-long hamfest at Quartzsite Arizona. Total attendance was over 850. Dick Norton's presentation went well with over 400 attendees. Total of 14 tested on Wednesday and another 8 on Saturday. Here is a photo of Gordon West WB6NOA establishing a "First Contact" with some of the ten new hams in front of the crowd. We signed the First Contact awards and presented them in front of the audience.
