1 Awards and Installation Banquet SPECIAL EDITION July 1, 2016 Issue 1, Volume 10 Photo: JB Brown CLUB PRESIDENT MARCO SCHLESSER DISPLAYS OUR NEW TEARDROP BANNER FOR THE ROTARY CLUB OF HONOLULU SUNSET CLUB
2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Marco Schlesser WE ARE ROTARRIFIC! Congratulations to President Jim, our outgoing Board and the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset for an awesome year and for achieving the Large Club of the Year award. This is our 5 th year running as Club of the Year (and the 15 th of the last 21 years). We now have a unique opportunity (and I m not talking about winning a 6 th year). Since the District Conference, I ve been contemplating what we should emphasize this year. At the President s training in San Jose, Past Rotary International President Cliff Dochterman challenged us to be UNCOMMON PRESIDENTS. He didn t mean that we should break with all of our traditions, like ringing the bell or the four way test, although the new rules do allow us to do that! I believe he meant that we should look beyond the tried and true; to question the status quo. It reminds me of a quote by Richard Branson. Decisions are not about right or wrong, success or failure; they are about the ability to learn. I now challenge our Board to be an UNCOMMON BOARD. I see an opportunity to make a difference in four areas this year: 1 - Work more closely with our three sponsored clubs (Rotary e-club of Hawaii, Honolulu Pau Hana and Kapolei Sunset). Let s support them so they flourish! I have already reached out to their Presidents to do a joint fundraiser to benefit THEIR clubs. 2 - Lay the foundation for a successful transition to a Young Professional presidency next year. I believe in generational diversity. Honolulu Sunset s success is not related to the age of our members; rather to the spirit with which we work together. By the same token, we must not ignore the fact that only 10% of Rotarians are 40 or younger. Our new Rotary International President, John Germ and zone 25/26 Director Brad Howard are fully committed to making Rotary more attractive to young professionals. Rotary MUST be at the intersection of commerce and cause. In the past we presented ourselves as a service organization. This is changing; Rotary has become a membership organization serving humanity. We MUST give business professionals a REASON to join Honolulu Sunset. 3 - Engage ALL members we don t seek new members so we can count their noses, we encourage membership so we can count on their hearts, or as Ayman says on their time, treasure and talent! It is intimidating for new members, especially young professionals, to step into leadership positions when they hear of our club s many successes. Therefore, I have asked every board member to mentor a successor, regardless of whether they plan to take the same position next year. 4 - Participation 90% of our members participated in at least one event last year let s look at how we can have 50%-75% member participation in ALL of our events. I look at Honolulu Sunset as being like a major TV production with weekly episodes. At the end of each episode the credits are shown with the lead cast, the supporting cast, stunts, extras, the many production departments and special thanks. Let s see ALL of our names acknowledged in our credits next year. Marco Page 2 of 7
