Legislative Update John Flynn, AFDA Executive Director & Lee Miller, AFDA Lobbyist The 52 nd Arizona Legislature 1 st Regular Session which convenes January 12, 2015 will provide Arizona s fire districts with a host of challenges and opportunities. AFDA lobbyists and leaders will provide a look at the political landscape, critical issues facing Arizona s fire districts and an overview of the AFDA Legislative Agenda for FirstNet, the National Public Safety Broadband Network Identifying AZ Fire District s Needs Michael Britt & Gregory Sundie, Program Managers, Arizona FirstNet FirstNet is creating a nationwide public safety broadband network to provide a dedicated wireless network that police officers, firefighters, and paramedics will be able to count on during emergencies and to meet their everyday missions. This interactive session will be an opportunity for Arizona FirstNet to update attendees on the current status of the program and encourage feedback on what Arizona Fire Districts believe should be considered in the buildout of this network. Who Is Going To Take My Place? Chuck Wunder, Green Valley FD Has your organization tossed around the term succession planning for a while now, but yet never seems to get this concept off the ground? Many of us have been through "basic training" related to harassment/sexual harassment, but do we really understand the issue in depth? Do we recognize the potential liabilities for our fire districts? What are the responsibilities of the Fire District, the Board, and the staff? Join us for a fun, interactive 2-part session as we explore this very critical workplace issue. This program addresses how the current economic realities affect local fire departments in communities across the US & Canada. Discuss why making a business case for better fire protection & a stronger economic circle is important. Discover why a hidden tax looms as an unintended consequence of less fire protection. Chief Cobb discusses such areas as response times, staffing reductions, and emergency response capabilities. He will also emphasize the importance of adequately trained firefighters, incident management techniques, apparatus and equipment. Insurance companies can reduce rates in communities that invest in improved fire protection leading to less loss. Through this information sharing we are able to communicate new information that will effect administration and assist members in preparing and planning for upcoming changes. Additionally, the meeting helps participants to build and maintain resources that focus on relevant job functions, and identify subject matter experts.
