So, at the request of our students, Dr. Tony Marchelweski generously gave of his time and expertise to address the student body about how best to cope with the modern world. We are very grateful. We also have some of our senior girls who meet regularly with our freshmen girls as student mentors. In fact, tonight dozens of girls will be spending the night at the school in a lock-in. Ms. Nickels and Ms. Pritzl will be spending their evening sleeping on a gym floor. We also recently held what we called Respect Day. We placed a large blue R on the cafeteria wall and asked the students to write the name or initials of someone they admired and respected. Then we asked that they put a name tag on their shirt of that particular name. I wish you could have seen the faces of those students who saw their own name on the tag of another student. You also would be proud to know how many bore the name of their own parents as a public display of the esteem in which they are held. On an entirely different note, I urge you to read the article in this Insights from our campus minister, Taylor Geiger, regarding our new patron saint, St. Edith Stein, (St. Benedicta of the Cross). Our art instructor, Tim Woodcock, has created a stunning portrait that will be displayed along with or other patrons in our atrium. Joining those paintings are new renderings of our patrons as they might have appeared in their youth. These were done by our students: Marco Valenzuela, Jade Treadway, Abbie Miller, and Mary Marchelewski. We thank them all. There are still many events to come on our calendar. We will conclude our liturgy series on May 1 st with mass according to the Byzantine Rite. Our annual Mission Day is held in May with seniors on retreat, sophomores traveling to Milwaukee to explore Catholic culture, our juniors giving service, and our freshmen spending a day learning about our patrons. There is still much to do. I personally want to thank Tim Woodcock, Paul Schweigl, Taylor Geiger, Shannon Pritzl, Joan Nickels, Sue Sevcik, and the entire faculty for their willing support of these efforts. And lastly, I pray the snow will melt soon. We also spent some time discussing how social media impacts their lives. I m sure you are aware of how connected students are. While this can be healthy and edifying, there are also pitfalls and dangers. To demonstrate how dependent we have become upon our phones and all they offer, we decided to try to go one day without them. 2 Roncalli High School Newsletter Page 2 Dear Community, As a Catholic school, we take very seriously the role of helping our students to grow spiritually during their time at Roncalli High School. As many of you know, we have three patron saints: St. John Baptist de la Salle, St. Francis, and Pope St. John XXIII. These patrons serve as both intercessors for our school and as examples of holiness and discipleship. One thing we realized last year, though, was that we did not have a female patron. So, to honor all that women have done for our Church and local communities, we began our search. Earlier this year we established a campaign to select a new female patron saint to add to our current patrons. After receiving online submissions from the community (students, faculty, parents, alumni, and community members), we put together a selection committee composed of nine people who represent the various aspects of our community. The committee went through all the submissions, selecting first those who had multiple submissions. We then spoke about what these potential new patrons would bring to our community: are they relatable to our students? Do they bring something new to our community? Can we incorporate their life and writings into every aspect of our Mission and curriculum? We are excited to announce that we have a new patron! St. Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) will serve as our newest Patron Saint. Her story of falling away from faith and then rediscovering it through her pursuit of the truth is humbling and relatable to our students. She is an intellectual powerhouse writing several pieces on psychology, philosophy, and women. Her spirituality is inspiring and brings a new aspect to our own spirituality as she was also a Carmelite nun. We are incredibly excited to add her to our patrons and our lives. Thank you for your submissions and prayers as we went through this process. Please continue to pray for us and all Catholic Schools as we continue to teach all our students about Christ, how to follow Christ, and how to share Christ with the world. I am so excited and truly blessed to be the Auction Coordinator of this amazing event and to be a part of the Roncalli community. The 2018 auction has already been made a huge success by the many generous sponsors and donors who continue to support this event. The generosity of so many people the community, businesses, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and students - have helped in this huge endeavor. What a great opportunity for all of us to work together and to have fun at the same time! Graduation Survey - All seniors will receive an in early May asking about their plans for after graduation including the college they will be attending, prospective major, and any scholarships they received so far. Juniors - There are two ACT test options this summer: June 9 with a registration deadline of May 4 and July 14 with a registration deadline of June 15. You can register at You can sign up for the ACT or the ACT Plus Writing. The only school in Wisconsin that recommends the writing portion is Marquette. Please use your ACT I.D. to make the registration faster and easier. College Visits - Summer is an excellent time to take advantage of college tours. Many schools offer a special preview or open house days. There is a Private College Week being held at Wisconsin Private Colleges from July Students and parents can talk to admissions and financial aid representatives, meet professors and current students, and tour the campus and residence halls. Badger Boy representative from Roncalli this year will be Matthew Koch. He is the son of Karl and Jeanne Koch. This program is designed to teach its citizens that the American form of government is stronger and more vital in today s world than ever before. 4 Roncalli High School Newsletter Page 4 Herb Kohl Education Scholarship Winners The World Affairs representatives from Roncalli will be Abby Onesti, daughter of Andy and Brenda Onesti, Alec Schermetzler, son of Paul and Lisa Schermetzler, Nicole Wagner, daughter of Dave and Patricia Wagner, and Kaylee Zipperer, daughter of Dale and Jennifer Zipperer. This year s focus will be on Innovation - Shaping the World you will Inherit. Student Excellence Winners -- Recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond. Macy Dueno and Evan Mihalakakos The Wisconsin Leadership Seminar representative from Roncalli this year will be Nick Welnetz. He is the son of Dan and Patty Welnetz. The focus of this seminar is building leadership skills. Student Initiative Winner -- Recipients, chosen by their schools, have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships. The Wisconsin HOBY (Hugh O Brian Youth Leadership) representative from Roncalli will be Austin (AJ) Voskuil. He is the son of Scott and Heather Voskuil. This seminar teaches young leaders how to think, not what to think creatively. Kevin Kroeger Roncalli has had eleven students chosen for the Herb Kohl Scholarships in the past six years which is among the top ten in the entire state regardless of school size!
