1 O f f i c i a l P u b l i c a t i o n o f t h e Wy o m i n g L i o n s We Serve Wyoming Convention Edition Volume 44 Issue 2 Special Issue 2018 Enjoy the First Annual Lions Challenge for Visually Impaired Youth at State Convention The Lion Challenge for Visually Impaired Youth will be held on Friday, June 1, beginning at 6:00 PM. This festive evening of heavy hors d oeuvres with a cash bar, live and silent auctions, and fellowship will be held in the McMurry Foundation Grand Atrium and UW Legacy Hall in the beautiful Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. All of the proceeds of the silent and live auctions will go directly to support the Wyoming Lions Summer School for Youth with Visual Impairments and the Allen H. Stewart Lions Camp on Casper Mountain. Each July, Wyoming Lions offer a one week school for youth with vision impairments. The Expanded Core Curriculum for Youth with Visual Impairments is the basis for instruction. Certified instructors teach independent living skills including: Aids to Daily Living (cooking, sewing, housekeeping and household organization), orientation and mobility using a cane and GPS, crafts (ceramics, lapidary, wood working), music, photography and computer skills. Students learn independent living skills while finding camaraderie with other youth who share similar disabilities. This evening of celebrations and helping youth with visual impairments will include; Heavy hors d oeuvres with a cash bar Testimonies from a former student and the camp director Incredible items such as a bronze sculpture from Cody to purchase during the silent and live auctions. Tickets are $30.00 for individuals or a purchase of four or more at $27.50 each. Tickets will cover the cost of the amazing location and food. Wyoming Lions are asked to donate items for the auction. This fund raiser for the camp for the visually impaired youth can t be done without your help. See you there!

2 We Serve Wyoming Special Issue 2 The Lion Clubs of Laramie and Medicine Bow Invite You to Attend the District 15 State Convention By PDG Lew Lyon The Laramie Plains, Medicine Bow, and Laramie Lions Clubs are looking forward to hosting the 2018 Lions Convention. We have worked with the Hilton Garden Inn, 2229 Grand Avenue, and The Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center, 222 S 22 nd St. to provide you an excellent venue for an enjoyable experience in Laramie. They are right across the street so no driving necessary except for tours. FRIDAY is set aside for travel, registration, various Board meetings, tours to Wyoming Territorial Prison at 975 Snowy Range Road for $5 per person or Laramie Plains Ivinson Mansion at 603 Ivinson Avenue for $5 per person and maybe the most exciting thing will be a great opportunity for Lions and locals to mingle together to raise funds in support of the Lions Challenge for Visually Impaired Youth. There will be silent and live auction items, Visa and Master Credit Cards accepted, AND heavy hors d oeuvres with a cash bar to be held in the McMurry Foundation Grand Atrium and UW Legacy Hall. And of course, finish off the evening in a hospitality room at the Hilton Garden Inn. Room rates at the host hotel, Hilton Garden Inn, have been negotiated to $113 per night plus tax. Make reservations by calling and refer to Lions Clubs Wyoming State Convention. We have blocked rooms until May 10, After that the rate increases dramatically. SATURDAY begins in the Hilton Garden Inn/University of Wyoming Conference Center with the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank sponsored breakfast, updates, and recognitions or a Diabetes walk/tour of UW campus. PID Mick Barrus will kick the convention off with Framing Your Lions Club followed by DG Val Grant conducting the District Annual Business meeting, continued into the Allen H. Stewart Lions Camp Annual Meeting, and followed by voting for the various positions open this year. The Lions of Wyoming Foundation Annual Meeting in conjunction with a great lunch will be at noon. Recognition of this year s Peace Poster winner is tentatively scheduled at this time. There will be two breakout sessions: one led by PID Mick (PVC) and the other led by Craig Cook of Cook & Associates Law Firm-Estate Planning. International Director Jennifer Ware will rap with her fellow Lions before a no-host cocktail social. The evening will culminate with a plated dinner banquet followed by local entertainment and later the hospitality room. SUNDAY morning will feature a Celebration of Life and Invocation to recognize our fallen Lions during the last year. We will follow with breakfast, election results, and comments by the Leadership Team. The Summit Committee meeting will focus on a review of the convention and other district matters.

3 We Serve Wyoming Special Issue 3 Wyoming Lions Welcome International Director Jennifer Ware to the State Convention Jennifer Ware, from Rapid River, Michigan, was elected to serve a two year term as a director of Lions Clubs International at the association s 99th International Convention held in Fukuoka, Japan, in Director Ware is a psychiatric nurse. 4 We Serve Wyoming Special Issue Auction Items Are Needed to Support The Challenge Clubs and individuals are asked to donate items to be auction during the silent and live auctions during the First Annual Lions Challenge for Visually Impaired Youth. All proceeds benefit the Wyoming Lions Summer School for Youth with Visual Impairments held in July and the Allen H. Stewart Lions Camp. Auction items need to be sent or registered to DG Val Grant by May 1. Items could include paintings, sculptures, Wyoming memorabilia, jewelry, vacations, themed baskets, and gift certificates. The auctions will be held during the District 15 state convention in Laramie on Friday, June 1, 2018, between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. Contact District Governor Val grant at or Lion Neil LaFave at with any questions. This fundraiser depends on all Wyoming Lions help. We need you to make this endeavor successful. Attractions to See in Laramie The Ivinson Mansion, now the Laramie Plains Museum, was built in 1892 in Laramie, Wyoming by Jane and Edward Ivinson. Designed by architectwalter E. Ware of Salt Lake City and built by local contractor Frank Cook, the house was regarded as the most significant residence in Laramie at its completion. Edward Ivinson gave the mansion to the Episcopal Church, which used it as a boarding school until After years of neglect, the house was acquired by the Laramie Plains Museum Association in 1972 and is now used as a museum and events center. The mansion at 603 Ivinson Avenue can be visited by Lion attendees and guests for $5.00 per person between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 1. Contact Lion Lew Lyon at for reservations or questions. The Wyoming Territorial Prison is a former federal government prison nearlaramie, Wyoming. Built in 1872 it is one of the oldest buildings in Wyoming. It operated as a federal penitentiary from 1872 to 1890, and as a state prison from 1890 to It was then transferred to the University of Wyoming and was used as an agricultural experiment station until In 1991 the facility was opened to the public, and in 2004 was designated as Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site. The site located at 975 Snowy Range Road can be visited by Lion attendees and guests for $5:00 per person between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 1.

5 We Serve Wyoming Special Issue 5 On Saturday, June 2, there will be a 5 km (3.1 mile) STRIDES: Lions Walk for Diabetes Awareness through the University of Wyoming Campus. Registration is at 7 a.m. and the walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. and should end around 8:30 a.m.. The Diabetes Clinic of the Ivinson Memorial Hospital is supporting this event with an information table. We are still working out the details of the walk. 7 We Serve Wyoming Special Issue 7 The Lions of Wyoming Foundation Board of Directors Needs New Members By PDG Dave Orr, Executive Director The Foundation is governed by an eleven-member Board of Directors. The Immediate Past District Governor, the current District Governor, 1 st VDG, and 2 nd VDG all serve on this Board. These members serve a four year term as they move through the chairs, eventually serving as President of the Board in the IPDG year. A treasurer is elected at-large (from anywhere in the state) to a three year term. The Area Directors are elected from each of the six Areas (Regions) of the State, also for three year terms. The treasurer and area directors may serve a second three-year term, but no more. The area trustees are elected in pairs so that there are always members with one or two years experience. The treasurer is matched with one of the pairs for election: areas 1 & 6 and treasurer, 3 & 5, 2 & 4. In Areas 3 and 5 will be up for election in 2018 at the District Convention. Lion Dick Dubay (Cheyenne Noon) is term limited, so he cannot run again. Lion Jeanne Stapleton (Rawlins Lions) is our Area 5 Trustee. She is eligible to run for a second term. The Foundation Board meets four times per year (at least one of them is by video teleconference). We meet at the State (District) Convention this year June 1-3, We usually meet at the new District Governor s first Cabinet Meeting, at the Allen H. Stewart Lions Camp in August. There is a fall meeting, often at the District Governor s Fall Cabinet Meeting at the site of the next year s convention (Gillette in 2019). Our winter meeting (January or February) is held by video teleconference using the GoToMeeting app. This avoids travel on wintery roads. We often have committee meetings during the course of the rest of the year using video teleconference technology as well. If you think you might be interested in running for a seat on the Foundation Board in 2018, you must have been a Lion for at least two years, and be in good standing with your club (dues current). You must be nominated with a letter of support from your club. If you have questions about the Lions of Wyoming Foundation Board of Directors, you may contact any of our current directors or Executive Director Dave Orr. Want to know more about the Lions of Wyoming Foundation? Check the website:
