Our mission To develop and promote programs and services in our community to meet the diverse needs of those 55+. Fall Fitness Fest Minnetonka Senior Services, in partnership with the Plymouth Creek Center and Senior Community Services, is offering Fall Fitness Fest in September, a three-day program promoting fitness in people age 55 and above. Activities for all fitness levels will be offered. Events include: Wednesday, September 15: -, 3- or 4-mile walk, opening ceremony brunch, billiards tournament. Location: Minnetonka Community Center. Thursday, September 16: Nordic walking, croquet, tennis tournament, and bocce ball. Location: Plymouth Creek Center, th Ave. N., Plymouth. Friday, September 17: Golf, 10 or 1 mile biking option, bean bag tournament, and awards ceremony. Location: Minnetonka Community Center. Event cost is $10 for all three days and includes participation in as many events as you wish, all meals and snacks, a Fall Fitness Fest t-shirt and awards for event winners. Registration deadline is Wednesday, September 8. When registering list all events in which you would like to participate. Book and pie sale is Thursday, September 30 Minnetonka Senior Services, in conjunction with the Senior Advisory Board, will host its annual book and pie sale Thursday, September 30. If you have books and would like to donate them please follow these guidelines. Wanted: Hard and soft cover books in good condition Not accepted for sale: Reader s Digest condensed books, old textbooks, National Geographic or other magazines, CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, any books with odors, and any worn or outdated books that would not sell. Please recycle old books and magazines in your blue city curbside recycling bin. Book Drop-Off Times: Monday and Tuesday, September 7 & 8, 9 a.m. 3p.m. Book and Pie Sale: Thursday, September 30, 9 a.m. p.m. From 1:30- p.m. there will be a book blow out sale: $ for all you can fit into a bag. 2 Page special events September 010 Book and pie sale continued... Most books are $1 or less. Pies for sale per slice include blueberry, apple and cherry ($ per slice), or with ice cream, $3. Cream pies include chocolate, lemon meringue, banana cream and coconut cream ($3 per slice). Coffee is free with the purchase of pie. The Landing Shop (formerly known as the Mills Landing Gift Shoppe) will offer homemade crafts for sale. The Minnetonka Fire Department will be available to talk about the What If? program. Watercolor textures workshop: Karen Rognsvoog In this watercolor workshop, students will learn some of the different ways to create a texture on a flat surface using a brush and scraps of fibers for special effects. In the first half of the class, students will work from a photograph (bring one or select one from the instructor s collection). In the second half of the session, students will paint in the abstract using some of the techniques learned from the first half, also using a photo. Caregivers website demo Senior Community Services (SCS), in partnership with Independent Home Living (IHL), is excited to share this free web tool with the Minnetonka community. Come for an informational demonstration of the new website designed for caregivers so they can find resources, organize help and develop an online care team. Information on the website is specific to the Minnetonka community and cannot be found anywhere else. This free web-based tool is easy to use and provides essential information so that the person being cared for can remain in the community and independent as long as possible. Mills Landing Gift Shoppe is moving; changing name The Mills Landing Gift Shoppe will be moving to a new site located at 1180 Wayzata Blvd., Minnetonka. You will be able to browse and buy handmade toys, doll clothes and furniture, sweaters, booties, plus much more. The hours for the new shop will remain the same, Wednesday Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The current gift shop location will close Saturday, September 11, and the new location is set to have a grand opening on Friday, October 1. The new shop will be known as The Landing Shop. Volunteer Opportunities Volunteer Connections The Civic Volunteer Committee has coordinated tours this summer of local organizations using volunteers. In July, we visited St David s Child and Family Development Center, which offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities with a flexible schedule to match including: Forest and wetland restoration Early childhood classroom assistance Therapy department office assistance Toy and play group clean-up Gala and Fall Festival event assistance Garden and landscape maintenance Administrative assistance In addition to early childhood education, St. David s offers pediatric therapies, mental health services, early intervention and support and community special needs services. If you would like to volunteer to help with distribution of back-to-school supplies the week of Aug 3-7, call the Senior Center Office (95) for specific times. Senior Singles The senior singles will meet for their monthly meeting Wednesday, September 8. Hiking Group Do you enjoy hiking? You are welcome to join a hiking group that hikes for two to four miles each Saturday and Monday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. No registration is required for the walk, but members are asked to arrive by 8:15 a.m. as we leave sharply at 8:30 a.m. The pace is -to-3 ½ miles per hour. We often car pool to the walk location. The next walk and meeting location is determined after the current walk. For those interested, we usually stop at a nearby coffee shop after our walk. One member of the group sends out an notice to each member a few days before each walk, so your address is required. Changes or cancellations are also communicated by . If you are interested in joining this group, please register at the Minnetonka Senior Services ( ) providing your name, phone number and address. This information will then be forwarded to the member sending out the notices. Hikes through Minnetonka Join the Minnetonka Senior Center on monthly hikes from 9 10 a.m. at one of Minnetonka s parks or trails. These are free two-mile hikes. Please make sure to bring your own water and to meet at the designated park listed below. Maps are available at the senior center front desk. Lone Lake Park: Monday, September 0. Keeping your feet happy Nurses from the Happy Feet Agency are at the center on the first, second and third Fridays of the month from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. To make appointments and/or cancellations, call (763) There is a fee of $31. Blood pressure screenings Free blood pressure checks are available each month on the first and third Fridays from 9:30 11:30 a.m. and on the second Wednesday from 9:30 11:30 a.m. The services listed below are provided by Senior Community Services (SCS). SCS is a United Way Agency serving residents 55+ of suburban Hennepin County. Senior outreach available Marian Danielson is a senior outreach worker who serves seniors and their family members in the Minnetonka area. If you have questions regarding community services and resources for older adults, caregiving, future planning or personal concerns, please call (95) to make an appointment. H.O.M.E. services available Household and Outside Maintenance for Elderly (H.O.M.E.) for Minnetonka residents aged 60+ has volunteer groups and paid workers available to help with yard clean up, snow removal, window washing, painting, small repair jobs, and house cleaning. Minnetonka Senior Services would like to welcome Pam Nelson as the new H.O.M.E. services coordinator for Minnetonka. Pam can be reached at (95) , Monday through Friday during morning hours. You must pre-register and pre-pay for all programs before class, program and/or trip start date. Make checks payable to Minnetonka Senior Services (MSS). Class Cancellation Cancellation of a class requires at least two full working days before the start date of the class. Some classes may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Scholarships are available Limited financial scholarships are available for Minnetonka residents age 55 and over, for events, classes and one day trips. This is sponsored by Minnetonka Senior Services. Scholarships are kept confidential. Payment is due at the time of registration: Checks payable to Minnetonka Senior Services. Minnetonka Senior Services, Minnetonka Boulevard, Minnetonka, MN Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted. Trips are planned for seniors of Minnetonka who are given first priority at registration time. Only Minnetonka residents can sign up on the first day; others may register on the second day. Listed bus/van pickup locations and times are tentative depending on actual registration. Registrants will be notified only if changes are necessary. Trip cancellation policy: Refunds, minus a $5 administration cost, can only be given if you cancel before the payment deadline. If a cancellation is made after the payment deadline, the participant is refunded/credited for everything but $5 only if a replacement is found. Tips for registering for tours and adventures Call before you send in your money to make sure space is available. Popular trips can fill up on the first day of registration that is published in the newsletter each month. Call early for those trips that you don t want to miss.
