2 THE MAKING OF FRANCIS AND CLARE Come to hear Nancy and Steve Bachler share the full scoop and history behind the making of the Francis and Clare musical production which sold-out audiences enjoyed last August at Saint Mary s University Page Theatre. Date: Monday, November 6, 2017 Time: 1:00 p.m. ACTIVE AGING PROGRAMS WITH CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF SOUTHERN MN Aging is inevitable, so why not do it as actively as you are able! Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota has reworked the former Senior Services division to include the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a wide variety of Wellness Programs, and an Age Well at Home program. All three areas work together to offer services and opportunities for our community, including the popular Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) exercise program. Come and learn more about what these programs have to offer and some ways you can participate. Sue Degallier, Active Aging Program Administrator, and Bernie Merchlewitz, Age Well at Home Program Administrator, will be on hand to present this program and ways for you to engage in your future, health and wellness and in the common good. Date: Friday, November 10, 2017 Location: Winona History Center AMATEUR RADIO Bob Seaquist will lead this presentation about amateur radio. Bob has been a professional communicator for his entire career.and then some. He managed La Crosse s public radio station, WLSU, taught in the UW-La Crosse Mass Communications department then went to do public relations for the university. He also has been a reporter for television and radio and, following his retirement, a newspaper reporter. 2

3 He has loved technology all his life and even attended amateur radio licensing classes when he was 10 finally getting a license in his 50s. His principal interests are ragchew and QRP which he will explain. Date: Tuesday, November 14, 2017 WHAT IS A CITY MANAGER? Stephen Sarvi graduated from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities with a BA in Political Science and Minor in Humanities. He retired from the United States Army after 24 years of service in the Active, Reserve and Minnesota National Guard. Steve served on two overseas deployments including a peacekeeping mission to Kosovo and a 17-month combat deployment to Iraq. He ran for Congress in the Second Congressional District of Minnesota in 2008 and was endorsed by both the DFL and Independence parties. He has been married for 29 years and has three children. Stephen Sarvi Steve has served in local government for over 20 years; as City Administrator for the cities of Lanesboro, Watertown, Victoria and Rushford. He also served three terms as the mayor of Watertown. He has been serving as Winona s City Manager since February Date: Monday, November 20, 2017 MOVE TO AMEND Gene and Jean Lauer will describe the history, current status, and goals of the Move To Amend coalition. Move to Amend is a strategic plan to pass the 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. 7 GENETICS VII INBREEDING: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY Inbreeding among humans can take several levels of intensity from mild to extreme. The probability of deleterious effects due to the mating between relatives depends upon the closeness of the relationship involved in such inbreeding. The essence of this presentation is as follows: illustrations of pedigrees deemed to be inbreeding; an explanation of the genetics underlying the occurrence of deleterious effects; a determination of the calculations that predict the occurrence of these effects; religious considerations; and a discussion of certain families and cultures that have ignored the possible occurrence of genetic defects due to inbreeding. Richard Kowles is Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Biology at Saint Mary s University of Minnesota in Winona, MN. His undergraduate degree was obtained from Winona State University and after completing two master degrees, one in biology and one in education, he earned a Ph.D. in genetics at the University of Minnesota. He has taught for 58 years at various levels, the last 40 years as a geneticist and cell biologist at Saint Mary s University. Kowles is the author of two college textbooks, Genetics, Society, and Decisions and Problem Solving in Genetics, and more recently a trade book, The Wonder of Genetics. His latest book, A Passion to Teach. Fifty-eight Years of Humorous, Weird, and Engaging Tales, was published in Date: Monday, December 4, 2017 WITNESSING DEVELOPMENT IN ETHIOPIA Brian Singer-Towns spent 8 days in Ethiopia witnessing the impact of U.S. charitable giving-- both non-profit and governmental--in the lives of Ethiopian farmers. He will share stories and photos about the places and people he visited and why the people of Africa continue to need our support. Date: Monday, December 11,

8 MYSTERY READERS BOOK CLUB The Mystery Readers Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month at Callista Court. Members read any work by the author chosen for the month. To begin discussion one member gives a biographic summary of the author and information about his/her work.
