4 The Head Coach of Sprint Football Bill Wagner BILL WAGNER 34th season Head Coach Bill Wagner will be on a quest for a CSFL Championship title when he leads the University of Pennsylvania sprint football team onto the field for his 34th season in Wagner was honored in 2002 with the naming of a trophy that goes to the highest Ivy League placewinner in the CSFL each year the William Wagner Trophy. The trophy currently resides in Wagner s office as Penn earned it during its inaugural season. Wagner has achieved great success over the last few years, but achieved no greater accomplishment than the undefeated season in 2000, the program's first perfect season (6-0) since It was also the first time the Red and Blue defeated Army and Navy in the same season. Since 1996, Wagner has won 78 percent of his games (28-8) and recorded a 17-7 Collegiate Sprint Football League (formerly Eastern Lightweight Football League) mark, capturing one outright League championship, while sharing two other League titles and finishing second once. Wagner has also coached four All- CSFL/ELFL Most Valuable Players in Tom Morrin (1993), the Quakers third all-time leading rusher with 2,031 yards, Clint Schmidt (1996), who is second all-time in career receiving yardage with 760 yards, Tim Ortman ( ), the Red and Blue's all-time leading rusher with 3,670 yards and most recently Scott Moore (2000), who holds the Quakers record for most receiving yards in a career with 977. Wagner, who led the Red and Blue to CSFL/ELFL titles in three of the last six seasons, recorded his first ELFL championship in 1996, leading Penn to a 5-1 mark and a tie for the League championship with Army and Navy (all were 3-1 in league play). Penn lost to Navy, but defeated Army for only the second time in school history. Wagner placed 27 players on the All-ELFL squad in 1996, including the league's Most Valuable Player, Schmidt. The Quakers won their second title in 1998, again finishing 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the CSFL. They also boasted the league's top running back in CSFL MVP Tim Ortman and dominated the CSFL postseason honors with nine first-team all-league selections, seven second-team honorees and 11 honorable mention picks. The Red and Blue achieved their success in 2000 through stingy defense and solid offense. Penn led the CSFL in total defense (171.2 ypg), allowing their opponents to 20 yards fewer than any team in the league, and total offense, a feat they achieved for the second-straight season (385.3 ypg), even though they ranked second in both passing and rushing offense. A New Jersey native, Wagner came to Penn in 1970 after earning a distinguished reputation at Woodrow Wilson and Cherry Hill East High Schools in southern New Jersey. He coached football, baseball and basketball at both schools and led Wilson to a New Jersey Group IV championship in football. Wagner earned both his bachelor and Master's degrees in education from Trenton State College. While at Trenton State, the Lion Hall-of-Famer was an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection in football, baseball and basketball, earning 11 varsity letters. Following graduation, Wagner spent over 20 years playing semi-pro baseball in the Delaware Valley area. He currently plays 50-and-over fast-pitch baseball in the South Jersey Hot Stovers League, where he also presides as president. Penn's sprint football coach has also served as the pitching coach for the Quaker baseball team since his arrival in Wagner's diamond accolades include the Quakers' national ERA title in 1988 (2.72), three straight Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League titles from and Penn's trip to the NCAA Midwest Regionals in Oklahoma City after winning the 1995 Ivy League Championship. Wagner's tutelage has helped Penn pitchers rewrite the strikeout mark three times in the last four years including shattering the mark in 2002 by striking out 259 batters. Wagner, who was inducted into the South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, and his wife Connie, reside in Voorhees, N.J., and have three children, Bill, Beth and Stephen, and seven grandchildren, Sara, Caroline, Emily, Abigail, Giselle, Grace and Michael. 5 The 2003 Sprint Football Coaching Staff JOHN AMENDT 11th season Defensive Coordinator Special Teams Coach John Amendt begins his 11th season on the Penn coaching staff. His defensive units have ranked among the CSFL's best the last several years and the Quakers were first in the League in total defense in 2000 (187.8 ypg). Prior to Penn, he served as an assistant football coach at West Chester ( ), where he worked with the tight ends and running backs and coached two All-Americans. Amendt earned his bachelor's degree from Eastern College in DAN HARRELL 9th season Defensive Line Coach A 2000 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Dan Harrell is in his 28th year of coaching. Harrell is in his second tour of duty with the sprint football program (ninth season overall), having coached the lightweights for four years prior to leaving for the head coaching position at West Catholic High. Harrell is an all-around community man and also works in The Palestra at Penn. RALPH ROESLER 6th season Defensive Assistant Coach Ralph Roesler begins his sixth season at Penn as a defensive assistant. Roesler assists with the defensive backfield as well as with the running backs. In 1999, Penn's defense allowed an average of just 70 passing yards per game and recorded seven interceptions in six games. A graduate of Pfieffer College (N.C.) where he played baseball, Roesler returned to New Jersey and coached baseball at Shawnee High School in Medford. He has also coached American Legion baseball for several years and currently serves as the volunteer baseball coach at Penn. Doug Pires (top), Coach Roesler (middle), 2002 offensive line (bottom) NATE SCOTT 14th season Defensive Backs Coach The elder statesmen on the Penn coaching staff, Nate Scott enters his 14th season with the Quakers. Scott was a four-year starter for Penn lightweight football from 1985 to 1989 and was a two-time captain. He earned allleague honors at wide receiver in both his junior and senior seasons, and also played tight end, running back and strong safety. Scott teaches social studies at Triton High School in Runnemede, N.J., where he is also the assistant varsity baseball coach. MIKE RAWLINGS 1st season Offensive Line Coach Mike Rawlings enters his first season with Penn sprint football in 2003, joining the staff as an offensive line coach. Rawlings comes to the Quakers with 13 years of coaching experience, as he has served as an assistant coach at both Malvern Prep and West Catholic. In addition to coaching at Penn, Rawlings teaches mathematics and science at Malvern Prep in Malvern, Pa., where he also serves as the head recruiter for the football program. Rawlings earned his bachelor s degree in business administration and his Master s degree in education from Widener University.

6 2003 Sprint Football Season Outlook Hasani Sinclair (top), Chris Caputo (middle), Pat Monaghan (bottom) The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team will need to step up to the challenge of filling the void left by the loss of Mark Gannon, the Quakers third all-time leading rusher, and Jeff Bagnoli, the Red and Blue's second all-time leading receiver, if it wants to strengthen its presence in the Collegiate Sprint Football League in However, if the Quakers final game of the season where the Red and Blue set a program-record with 617 yards of offense against Princeton was any indication of the talent and determination that this team possesses, the future will be undoubtably bright for the Quakers. The Red and Blue saw a glimpse of the future in the second half as Gannon gave way to Greg Bagnoli during the final 30 minutes. Greg Bagnoli rushed for 105 yards in the contest, while the elder Bagnoli saw his predecessor Patrick Monaghan collect four catches for 83 yards of offense, to prove that the returning Quakers have the staying power to be among the top of the CSFL. Head Coach Bill Wagner will be aiming for the program's eighthstraight winning season after finishing 4-2 a year ago. The Red and Blue also finished with a.500 or above record in League play for the seventh-consecutive season as they finished third in the CSFL with a 2-2 mark. THE SIGNAL CALLER While the Quakers will return a young squad at running back and wide receiver, the Red and Blue can once again count on a seasoned veteran and two-time All-CSFL selection Jimmer Donapel to guide the Quaker offense at quarterback. After passing for 1,757 yards during his first three years at Penn, Donapel is on pace to become the first quarterback in Quakers history to throw for over 2,000 yards in his career. Donapel enters the 2003 season just 185 yards shy of Tommy Frankel's ( ) 20-year old record of 1,960 passing yards. Donapel is not only a threat with his arm, but also with his legs as he finished fourth on the squad with 143 yards on the ground after throwing for 665 yards and five touchdowns last season. Backing up Donapel will be Jimmer Donapel Monaghan and freshman Mike Loguidice. THE BACKS In an offense that relies on the run to set up the pass, the Red and Blue will look to three different backs to replace Gannon. Bagnoli will be the opening day starter for Wagner's club after finishing second on the team with 173 rushing yards. A quick back that can get to the hole immediately, Bagnoli averaged a team-best 5.6 yards per carry last season. Adding depth for the Quakers will be sophomore Keith Smith and freshmen J.T. Hutchinson and Masamba Sinclair, who will look to learn on the fly in Making way for the trio will be a pair of veteran fullbacks - juniors Adam Schlosser and Peter Heller. The duo combined for 38 rushing yards while paving holes for Gannon a year ago. Joining the Red and Blue this season at fullback is freshman Ryan O'Toole, who is expected to make an immediate contribution. THE TIGHT ENDS The strongest addition to the Red and Blue in 2003 will be the return of Tim Murphy after a one-year hiatus from the program. Murphy will not only provide Donapel with a pair of veteran hands but he will also be a mentor to second-year tight end David Derr. Murphy, a second-team All-CSFL selection in 2001, led the Quakers in receptions (15) two seasons ago. He also posted a pair of touchdowns and 233 receiving yards during the 2001 campaign. Derr, who served as the third option for Donapel last season, made seven catches for 125 yards in His 17.9 yards per catch was three tenths of a yard better than Jeff Bagnoli, who averaged 17.6 ypc. THE RECEIVING CORP Along with Murphy, Monaghan will serve as the primary target for Donapel during his final year of competition with the Red and Blue. A speedy wide receiver that is known as a triple threat, Monaghan can not only catch passes, but can run the reverse and call plays from over the center. Monaghan finished second on the team with 21 receptions as he hauled in 333 yards of offense. He also contributed two touchdowns and averaged, 15.9 ypc. Sophomore Greg Herman will also make his way into the starting lineup in Herman made two catches for the Red and Blue during his freshman season. Wagner will also look to work a slew of newcomers into the lineup Tim Murphy as John Siegel, Andrew Myer, Bob DeLaura and Chris Gumiela join the Quakers for the 2003 campaign. THE O-LINE One year after being the youngest part of the Quakers program, the offensive line may become the strength for the Red and Blue. Penn returns four starters, losing only four-year starter Robert Pavlacka to graduation. The offensive line surrendered just 11 sacks during the 2003 season as they not only made holes for Gannon but kept pass rushers at bay as well.

7 2003 Sprint Football Season Outlook The starting offensive line will consist of junior Brian Baldwin and sophomores Jordan Cloyd, Matt Paris and Ben Drane. Looking to vie for that fifth spot on the line will be sophomores Daniel Weber and Matthew Bowen and junior Joseph Caulfield, who will make the jump from defense to join the offensive line in THE D-LINE The defensive line will be able to give the Quaker s opponents a variety of lineups as it returns 10 letterwinners to the trenches in Leading the Quakers is three-time first-team All-CSFL standout John Pinto. Pinto is coming off a solid 2002 season, where he finished second on the team with 31 tackles (20 solo) and tied for the team lead in tackles for a loss with five. He also recorded two sacks and recovered one fumble. Lining up alongside Pinto will be two-time CSFL honoree Doug Pires. Pires tied Pinto with 31 tackles a year ago and led the Red and Blue with five sacks. All-CSFL recipient Matt London will round out the middle of the defensive line as he returns to the Red and Blue after making 12 tackles, four for a loss, and two sacks last season. Providing depth behind this triumvirate of perennial All-CSFL players will be Brett Smiley, Hasani Sinclair, who returns to the Red and Blue after sitting out the 2002 season, and Robert Pelly, who moves from the offensive line to the defensive line. The outside pass rush duties will be assigned to seniors Alex Gormley and Brian Raphael as they replace leading tackler Stephen Willard. Gormley netted 10 tackles and one sack, while Raphael tripped up 12 would be tacklers and sacked two opposing quarterbacks. Gormley and Raphael will be spelled by Juan Hernandez and Alex Martinez. Rayford June THE LINEBACKERS The Quakers not only have depth up front but also at the linebacker position in A pair of All-CSFL honorees - Mike Russo and Chris Malachowski - return to provide a second line of defense for the Red and Blue. Russo is coming off a 2002 season that saw him wrap up 23 tackles and record one pass break up, while Malachowski tied for fourth on the team with 25 tackles. Junior Kevin Piro (12 tackles) and sophomore Henry Watson will battle for the third starting linebacker position. THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD With all of the attention surrounding the front seven, the Quakers defensive backfield has proven over the last four years that they are as talented as anybody in the CSFL. The return of All-CSFL selection Ray June and senior Chris Caputo should make 2003 no different. June, the Quakers top cover corner, posted a team-best four picks in six games last season and broke up seven attempted passes. If that was not enough, June hauled down 25 receivers, including 14 solo. Caputo proved to be a perfect compliment to June on the other side of the field as he accounted for five pass break ups and 20 tackles, 17 of which were solo. Sophomore Adam Dubin provides stability to the Red and Blue as a nickel corner. During his first year with the Quakers, Dubin picked off two passes, recorded four pass break ups and made eight tackles. Junior John Ohly gives the Red and Blue a hard-hitting safety after making 11 tackles a year ago. Junior Jeffrey Campbell (two tackles) and sophomores Chip Stewart (two tackles) and Keith Smith (nine tackles, two for loss) provide Penn with two more options in the secondary. THE KICKING GAME Junior Evan Nolan, who joined the Quakers just prior to their first game during the 2002 season, will handle all place kicking duties for the Red and Blue in Nolan was 4-for-5 on field-goal attempts with a career-best 43 yard effort on the opening day against Cornell. The Quakers also welcome back veteran punter Ohly, who booted 29 punts last season for an average of 30.6 yards. Ohly also booted four balls inside the 20 yard line and forced a pair of fair catches. Caputo will serve as the backup place kicker and punter for the second-straight year for the Red and Blue. THE RETURN MAN Monaghan will once again handle the return game for the Red and Blue. After splitting time with Jeff Bagnoli the past two years, Evan Nolan Monaghan takes over full time kick and punt return duties this season. He returned a team-best nine kicks for 160 yards last season and brought back two punts for 18 yards. LOOKING FORWARD The Red and Blue s first test of the 2003 season will come in a preseason meeting with defending CSFL champion Navy. With a strong defense and the veteran leadership provided by Donapel on the offensive side of the ball, the Quakers will once again look to place their name on the CSFL trophy in Stephen Willard (top), Matt London (middle), Brian Baldwin (bottom)

16 2002 Sprint Football Season in Review Doug Pires (top), Robert Pavlacka (middle), Stephen Willard (bottom) Sprint Football Has Seventh-Straight Winning Season The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team recorded its seventh-straight winning season in 2002 as it finished the campaign at 4-2 overall. The Quakers, who have figured in the mix for the CSFL title each of the last seven seasons, relied primarily on an offense that led the League with yards per game. For the second-straight season, the Quakers finished third in the CSFL after a heartbreaking loss to Army, 17-16, at Franklin Field on Oct. 19, and a 48-0 loss to Navy in Annapolis, Md. on Nov. 1, in a game that saw the Red and Blue lose their starting quarterback in the first quarter. The Red and Blue have now finished in the top-three in the League Jimmer Donapel dating back to the 1996 season, when they won their first CSFL title. Penn has won three CSFL titles since that time (1996, 1998 and 2000). Gannon Moves Into Second Place On Career Rushing List For the second-straight season, senior Mark Gannon led the CSFL in rushing as he recorded a League-high 574 yards in six games, for an average of 95.7 yards per game. Gannon's 574 rushing yards allowed him to become just the fourth Quaker in program history to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark as he finished his career with 2,106 yards on the ground. This places him second all-time at Penn behind Tim Ortman, who rushed for 3,670 yards from Bagnoli Climbs Receiving Chart Senior Jeff Bagnoli's career-best 388 single-season receiving yards moved him into second-place all-time in Penn history with 864. The 388 single-season receiving yards is the most by a Quaker since the 2000 campaign when Scott Moore had 401 and became the Red and Blue's all-time leading receiver with 977 yards. Dominance Over Ivy League Foes The Red and Blue continued their dominance against fellow Ivy Leaguers Cornell and Princeton in The Quakers finished the season outscoring the Big Red 49-3 in two contests, while scoring 91 points in two games against Princeton, which included a season-high 55 point-performance against the Tigers on Nov. 8. The Quakers have now won 23- straight games against the Big Red and Tigers dating back to Sept. 20, 1997 when Cornell handed the Red and Blue a 21-7 loss in Ithaca, N.Y. Princeton, the Red and Blue racked up a program-record 617 yards of total offense. The Red and Blue offensive surge was led by senior Brandon Gebers, who made his first career start at quarterback, and threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns. The Quakers' ground game was also in full effect as they had a pair of 100-yard rushers - senior Mark Gannon (180 yards) and sophomore Greg Bagnoli (105 yards) - as Penn finished the game with 394 yards rushing. Sprint Football Places 19 Players On CSFL Teams The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team placed 19 players on the All-CSFL team. Headlining the list for the Red and Blue were first-team honorees Jimmer Donapel (QB), Mark Gannon (RB), Jeff Bagnoli (WR), John Pinto (DL) Rayford June (DB) and Doug Pires (DL). Gannon earned first-team honors for the third-consecutive year after scoring six touchdowns in Bagnoli picked up his second-consecutive first-team nod as he finished the season with a career-high 22 catches and Donapel also made his second-straight first-team appearance after finishing the season second in the League in passing yardage (665 yards) and quarterback efficiency (133.0). Pinto received his third-straight first-team nod after recording 31 tackles and two sacks, both which were good for second among the Quakers. Pires led the League with 5.5 sacks and finished third in the CSFL with 41 tackles to earn first team honors. Seniors Robert Pavlacka (OL) and Stephen Willard (DL) along with juniors Chris Malachowski (LB) and Chris Caputo (DB) and sophomore Patrick Monaghan (WR) were named second-team. Seven Quakers also received honorable mention; freshmen Ben Drane (OL), David Derr (TE) and Jordan Cloyd (OL), sophomores Evan Nolan (K), Brian Baldwin (OL) and Mike Russo(LB), junior Matt London (DL) and senior Brandon Gebers (QB/WR/DB). Over the next 25 years, as athletes became bigger, the weight limit was increased from 150 to 154 lbs. and later to 159 lbs. At that time, the league was called the Eastern Lightweight Football League. Four years ago, the ELFL increased the playing weight to 165 lbs. Founded as the Eastern 150-pound Football League in 1934, the original group had seven members: Cornell, Lafayette, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Rutgers, Villanova and Yale. On June 9, 1998, the head coaches and athletic directors from each school in the present league - Army, Cornell, Navy, Penn and Princeton - collectively met to discuss the Lightweight Football League's survival. The meeting addressed the problems of attracting teams to join the league, as well as gender equity issues, club versus varsity status and the future of the league. Strong support and leadership by the athletic directors and coaches has been pledged to keep Sprint Football as a varsity sport and to actively search out new teams to join the league. Discussion about the weight issues that faced wrestling nationwide in 1998 prompted coaches and athletic directors to adopt several NCAA rules and regulations for monitoring players' weights and the proper way to control weight loss. This discussion led to the elimination of the name "Lightweight," and it was replaced with the word "Sprint," which expresses the quickness and speed of play in the league and will serve as a marketing tool to attract new teams. "When you talk about sprint football, it reflects the positive qualities of the game," then- Commissioner George VanderZwaag said. "It is defined by the speed of the players and the open nature of the offensive and defensive schemes. We offer something truly unique in the world of intercollegiate athletics. We hope that other institutions recognize this league and want to join." With plans of expansion (the league is hoping to add two more schools in the near future) and the naming of Princeton s Associate Athletic Director Mike Cross as commissioner, sprint football and the CSFL continue to grow and excite. 24 Now You Know... Nine Penn alumni, faculty members and trustees signed the Declaration of Independence. Eleven Penn alumni, faculty members and trustees signed the U.S. Constitution. The Heisman Trophy is named after Penn football coach and Law School graduate John Heisman. John B. Taylor, College 1907 and Veterinary School 1908, was the first black athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for the U.S. (1908). The University of Pennsylvania is indisputably one of America's finest universities. Its greatness lies not in its longevity, but in its culture and achievements. At Penn, you'll find a historic, Ivy League school with highly selective admissions and a history of innovation in interdisciplinary education and scholarship. You'll also find a picturesque campus amidst a dynamic city and a world-class research institution. Penn continues to carry on the principles and spirit of its founder, Benjamin Franklin: entrepreneurship, innovation, invention, outreach, and a pragmatic love of knowledge. Franklin's practical outlook has remained a driving force in the university's development. Penn is the only school in the country to have at least one representative on every U.S. summer Olympics team since The record nine gold medals Penn students and alumni won at the 1900 Olympics has never been matched by another school. College Hall is one of two buildings that cartoonist and Penn alumnus Charles Addams remembered when he drew the Addams Family mansion. Dr. John Draper took the first photographs of the moon at Penn. The Penn Relays is the world s largest and oldest annual track and field meet.

25 Flexible Options Undergraduate students at Penn choose from an incredible array of courses. Our online course catalog ( makes that clear. What may not be immediately apparent, though, is the academic flexibility our programs permit. For example, double majors, dual-degree programs, and joint-degree programs enable students to pursue a second major in their own or another of Penn s four undergraduate schools. Submatriculation, another option, makes it possible for undergraduates to begin graduate programs at Penn while completing their baccalaureate degrees. Other opportunities for individually tailored study include the option of initiating new courses, called preceptorials. Recent student-initiated preceptorials have included such offerings as Astronomy for English Majors, Ways of Etiquette in Japan, Australian and American Landscape Painting, Cyberspace and A Trip to Fallingwater. Admissions Penn is among the nation s most selective and competitive universities. Students who apply for admission typically have outstanding records of academic and extracurricular achievement. About 95 percent of the students in each new class have ranked in the top 10 percent of their secondary school classes. If you would like to receive additional information or an application for admission, please contact our Office of Undergraduate Admissions ( or Students Undergraduates - 9,917; graduate and professional students - 8,996. Penn received a record-high 18,784 applications for admission to the Class of Of those applicants, 3,946 or 21 percent, were offered admission, making the Class of 2006 the most selective in Penn's history and the institution among the most selective universities in America. About 43 percent of those accepted for admission to the Class of 2006 are Black, Hispanic, Asian, or Native American. Women comprise 50 percent of all students currently enrolled. History Penn traces its origins to 1740, when a group of Philadelphians established a trust for the instruction of children in a charity school. In 1750, Benjamin Franklin combined this trust with his Public Academy of Philadelphia, founded the year before. This institution, chartered in 1755 as the College, Academy and Charitable School of Philadelphia, became the first university in what is now the United States with the establishment of the country s first medical school in In 1779, it became the first university in the country to formally bear the name. Bring It All Home One of the newest developments at Penn involves bringing first-year students, sophomores, juniors and seniors together in residential college houses. Of course, that in itself isn t revolutionary, but this is Each college house offers its members a point of contact with Penn s growing system of academic support services called The Wheel. The Wheel provides residence-based support in mathematics, information technology and computing, writing, research and library resources. Available services will soon include other core academic areas as well as career planning and placement. Using new technology and the supportive environment of the college houses, the Wheel delivers services when and where students need them typically in each student s room and often late at night, when most University offices are closed. Undergraduate Schools The College at Penn, School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Nursing and Wharton. Graduate Schools Annenberg School for Communication, Arts and Sciences, Dental Medicine, Education, Engineering and Applied Science, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Social Work, Veterinary Medicine and Wharton. Faculty Total - 4,319. Members of the faculty have earned Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes, and Fulbright Fellowships. Six current faculty members have received MacArthur Fellowships; and 21 have received Guggenheim Fellowships since Student-Faculty Ratio 6.4:1. Academics 53 undergraduate departments; Penn is regarded as a national leader in programs that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and combine liberal learning with practical application, such as Biological Basis of Behavior, International Studies of Business and Management and Technology.

26 Financial Aid We urge you not to let financial concerns deter you from applying to Penn. We make every effort to help meet students' financial needs, as illustrated by these facts: * Almost 60% of Penn undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance. * 80% of freshmen applying for financial aid for September 2003 received a needbased award. * The average financial aid award for entering aided freshmen in the year 2003 was $25,411 (combination of grant, loan and work-study job). * Nearly 40% of Penn undergraduates are awarded need-based grant aid. * In , Penn is committing over $65 million of its resources for grant aid to undergraduate students. * The University's "need-blind" admissions policy ensures that no one is denied admission because he or she requires financial assistance. Penn will meet 100% of your financial need as determined by Student Financial Services. Eligibility There is no arbitrary income cut-off for financial aid eligibility. Because each family is different and financial aid is determined by many factors, we encourage you to apply if you are concerned about your ability to pay. How Financial Aid is Determined Financial aid at Penn is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need as determined by Student Financial Services. Financial need is the difference between Penn's costs and the amount your family is expected to contribute (Educational Expense Budget - Family Contribution = Financial Need). Your need is determined from data you provide on your financial aid application and your parents' and your 2003 tax returns.the following are considered in calculating financial need: family size your income and assets your parents' income and assets number of family enrolled in college extraordinary family circumstances Penn does not rely on the federally-calculated family contribution, but rather, carefully reviews all aid applications in order to allocate available aid resources as equitably and effectively as possible. Financial information from both parents, even if they are divorced or separated, is used to determine financial need. What is a Financial Aid Award? A financial aid award, also known as a "package," typically includes a federal work-study job, student loan and in most cases, grant. Penn participates in all federal assistance and state programs to provide students with a comprehensive financial aid program to meet 100% of your determined need. How to Apply for Aid Complete the College Board PROFILE application, Penn's Institutional Financial Aid Application and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Copies of your parents' and your 2003 tax returns and W-2 forms will also be required. Details are in the undergraduate admissions application. Notification of Financial Aid Award Penn will notify you of your financial aid award at the same time your admission letter is mailed, as long as you have met all application deadlines. Penn Plan materials, including current interest rates and program options, are also included at that time. Our goal is that you will know all of your financial options prior to the deadline for notifying colleges of your enrollment decision. Students and their families are also encouraged to contact Student Financial Services. 27 M ade famous as the birthplace of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, Philadelphia offers more than cobblestone streets and historic landmarks. Cultural, culinary, artistic and ethnic treasures abound. Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by William Penn, an English Quaker. King Charles II granted him a parcel of land that included 1,280 acres between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. For Penn, this was the beginning of a new colony based on religious freedom. Philadelphia s history from 1774 to 1880 is linked to the American Revolution and the birth of a young nation. As the colonies grew, Philadelphia became the cradle of the nation s burgeoning quest for freedom. The First Continental Congress met at Carpenter s Hall in At the State House, later renamed Independence Hall, patriots declared their independence in Then in 1787, the Constitutional Convention was held at Independence Hall. A short time later, Philadelphia served as the fledgling nation s capital from 1790 to Of course, the rest is history. The story of our nation s birth is preserved at Independence National Historical Park and its brand new visitor s center, in America s most historic square mile. The fifth-largest city in the United States and the second-largest city on the East Coast, Philadelphia is at the crossroads of the Northeast and the mid- Atlantic states. With 1.5 million residents and another four million in the surrounding region, Philadelphia is a welcoming place, the hometown of comedian Bill Cosby, celebrated contralto Marian Anderson, actor and musician Kevin Bacon, Princess Grace of Monaco (first known as the silver screen s Grace Kelly) and superstar Will Smith. Philadelphians enjoy the opportunities of the city including international commerce, national touring theatre, over 27 accredited colleges and universities and eight professional sports teams but take pride in the manageable nature of their hometown. There s no better way to explore Philadelphia than on foot. Easily navigable streets and a host of eclectic neighborhoods make Philadelphia one of the greatest walking cities in the world. A true residential city, Philadelphia is home to fascinating architecture, history and culture. From cobblestoned alleys of colonial-era homes to grand boulevards lined with monumental landmarks, Philadelphia s streets tell countless stories and provide character for this very diverse city. No street emits as much energy and flair as South Street, Philadelphia s hip and trendy melting pot. Between Front and Sixth Streets, a party atmosphere prevails and the people-watching is as fun as the window shopping. All walks of the fashionably unfashionable come together in a variety of restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs. Far-from-conservative specialty stores, antiques and boutiques fill block after block with a smattering of name-brand retailers in the mix. Dining ranges from authentic Philadelphia cheesesteaks to sidewalk cafes and international cuisine. 28 The success of University of Pennsylvania athletic programs weighs largely on the academic progress of each student-athlete. In order to achieve excellence in all areas, Penn s student-athletes are encouraged to utilize services available through its academic services program, which is coordinated by Rosemarie Burnett. The Office of Academic Services works to insure that all student-athletes maintain academic integrity while making steady progress toward a degree. To this end, study sessions, tutoring in large groups or on an individual basis and counseling are made available to every student-athlete at the University. A student-athlete who is successful in the classroom is one that is a successful player on the field. The commitment to academic and athletic excellence requires discipline, dedication and motivation. These are the same characteristics needed for a Penn student-athlete to succeed beyond the walls of this university after earning a degree from one of the most prestigious institutions in the country. Penn provides assistance with the student-athlete s academic progress by working with the University s support services to enable the student to excel academically. The Academic Services Office staff can provide valuable assistance with a wide variety of concerns including: University procedures Educational and career goals clarification Time management Referrals to University resources General strategies for succeeding at Penn Academic Initiatives Earning a degree from the University of Pennsylvania is a distinguished honor that will remain with you for the rest of your life. Walking down Locust Walk as a part of the tradition of graduation is a memory that will last a lifetime. The Office of Academic Services acts as the link between athletics and other departments on campus. Through this program, Rosemarie Burnett and her staff: Meet regularly with new students to discuss upcoming academic requirements, transition issues, time management strategies, etc. Facilitate students career exploration. Assist students with the selection of courses and major declaration. Develop long-term academic plans. Provide support for students with personal concerns. Grade -Tracking Program The Grade-Tracking Program is designed to monitor the academic progress of targeted student-athletes during the academic year. Student-athletes for this program include those on academic probation and those identified by their school eligibility officer, dean or coach. Information acquired from the faculty and deans is used as the basis of student-athlete referrals to the appropriate academic support service resources. CAAP Collegiate Academic Achievement Program The Collegiate Academic Achievement Program is designed to provide student-athletes with supplemental study and tutoring opportunities as well as to foster academic interaction with fellow studentathletes. Some of our CAAP tutors are current student-athletes. During the academic year, rooms in the Towne Building are reserved for advising and tutoring sessions. Workshops are conducted in the beginning of the term on strategies for succeeding at Penn. In addition, career and graduate presentations are organized during the academic year. CAAP sessions are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening from 7:30-10 p.m. Laptop Computer Program Laptop computers are provided to student-athletes for use while at an away competition or while participating in required practices and competition during vacation periods. The laptop computers (as available) may be used by any in-season varsity student-athlete whose participation in the next scheduled competition has been confirmed by his or her coaching staff. Faculty Mentors The Faculty Mentor program at the University of Pennsylvania provides an additional resource for enhancing the athletic and academic experience of our student-athletes. Faculty Mentors work with student-athletes, teams, coaches and administrators to provide academic advising to current student-athletes, serve as a resource for prospective student-athletes and foster relationships between athletics and the University community. Recognizing the value of intercollegiate athletics within an educational setting, faculty mentors are dedicated to encouraging a balance between the pursuit of both athletic and academic excellence.
