Lafayette graduates are prepared for success and leadership from one of the nation s most academically competitive and respected institutions. The Lafayette Experience consists of four key elements: n Student-focused teaching and mentoring by an exceptionally qualified faculty, committed to each student s success. Student-focused teaching, mentoring, and academic excellence are the top priorities of the faculty at Lafayette. Undergraduate research, directed by fully involved and supportive faculty, is a priority and a key component in the primary teaching mission. Lafayette s faculty make deep professional and personal commitments to the success of their students in relationships that can last a lifetime. Lafayette s approach to teaching and learning goes well beyond traditional classroom methods. Through active-learning experiences in small-group seminars, student-centered team projects, independent study, and student/faculty research, students have the opportunity to cross academic boundaries in the arts and sciences and engineering. Students study abroad, participate in work/study experiential learning opportunities, and hold externships with alumni and internships in government, industry and many other fields. n A small college community with large college resources. Major financial resources make superb facilities and exceptional academic programs available to all students. Lafayette s close-knit residential campus, which is consistently referred to as one of the most beautiful in the nation, creates an atmosphere conducive to learning and achieving one s goals. Also integral to The Lafayette Experience is the strong support the College receives from its global network of loyal alumni. n a friendly residential community offering an exciting social life with a broad spectrum of extracurricular activities. Whether you are a campus visitor or a member of the Lafayette family, friendliness and civility characterize the campus scene. Lafayette s diverse student body provides an enriching social and cultural experience. 2 Lafayette Athletics Lafayette College has a proud tradition of excellence in athletics, both on the playing field and in the classroom. Currently in its 129th year of intercollegiate athletic competition, Lafayette has always competed against the biggest and best in the Northeast and across the nation. Lafayette competes in 23 varsity sports, an unusually high level of athletic activity for a college of its size. Although the school ranks among the smallest at the Division I level (FCS in football), Lafayette produces highly competitive teams that consistently compete for Patriot League championships and NCAA Tournament bids. The Leopards have won 75 team championships in the past two decades. A charter member of the Patriot League, which was established in 1990, Lafayette has already captured 38 conference titles. Lafayette student-athletes are also impressive in the classroom, as 68 percent achieved a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) or higher in Last academic year, 243 Lafayette student-athletes were named to the Patriot League s Academic Honor Roll for having at least a 3.2 GPA and earning a varsity letter. Lafayette s golf program began in Since the inception of the Patriot League in 1991, three Leopards have been recognized with All-Patriot League status, and 20 student-athletes have earned 32 All-Patriot League Honor Roll accolades. The Leopards posted their best finish in 2003 when Jim Hutnik was recognized as Coach of the Year for guiding the team to fourth place in the final standings. Cody Sumpter Tyler Ostrovsky 2
3 coaching staff Jim Hutnik Head Coach Entering his seventh season as Leopards head golf coach, Jim Hutnik is a 1978 graduate of Lafayette College with a degree in History. While on College Hill, Hutnik was a member of both the men s basketball and golf teams. He currently teaches American Government at Easton High School, where he has been the varsity coach of the boys basketball team for the past four seasons. In season, Easton had a perfect 24-0 regular season record. He spent the previous 12 years as a head basketball and golf coach at Bethlehem Catholic High School, where he led the golf team to two East Penn League Championships and was the 1999 Coach of the Year. As head coach of the Bethlehem Catholic s varsity basketball teams, Hutnik compiled a record of and posted a winning record in each of his 12 campaigns. He led the Hawks to five appearances in the District XI championship game, winning the title twice. Hutnik was named Coach of the Year by the Express-Times in 1995, 1998 and 2001, and was nominated for Pennsylvania s Coach of the Year award in Prior to his time at Bethlehem Catholic, Hutnik was the head men s basketball and golf coach as well as the assistant baseball coach at Allentown College (now DeSales University) from He tallied an career mark over six seasons on the hardwood and led the team to its first Eastern States Athletic Conference championship and 20-win season. Hutnik also spent six years as an assistant basketball coach at the University at Maine, from , following one season at Brandeis University where he was an assistant baseball and basketball coach. 4 season outlook Head coach Jim Hutnik enters his seventh season at Lafayette. The 2008 spring championship season saw the Leopards finish in seventh place at the Patriot League Tournament in Bethlehem, Pa. The Leopards score of 635 on the final 36 holes was tied for third best in the field. The Leopards performed in the classroom as well, with five student-athletes named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Economics and major Andrew Carlins paced the quintet with a perfect 4.0 gradepoint average one of four in the conference to do so and the only underclassman to achieve the feat. He was one of three freshmen in the conference to earn his way onto the list. Carlins was joined by senior Steven Melnic, junior Reed Valutas and two members of the 2008 senior class, Pat Kelly and Brandon Mitchel. Academics are certainly an important aspect at Lafayette, Hutnik said. The program is proud of the fact that so many of our players achieve such lofty standards while participating at the Division-I collegiate level. A small core of veterans will complement Lafayette s unit of youthful talent. Seniors Anoop Shah, Ken Suarez, Pat Gallagher and Melnic along with Valutas comprise the quintet of upperclassmen. Tyler Ostrovsky emerged as the one of the team s best scorers during his rookie campaign in He received Second-Team All-Patriot League honors after his seventh place finish in the Patriot League Championships. He led the Leopards with a 236 score over three rounds at Saucon Valley Country Club and shot a team best 77 on the final day. Ostrovsky became the first Lafayette golfer to be named to the All-Patriot League team since In addition, he became just the third Leopard in school history to receive such an honor. Ostrovsky continued to be the team s most consistent golfer in the fall, playing the most rounds of any Leopard during the season. His average score of 76.3, which spanned eight outings, ranked as the team s second-best average, and he picked up the most top-10 finishes with three. Though sophomore Erik Adolfsson played just three rounds of golf during the fall, he competed in five of Lafayette s seven tournaments last spring. Fellow classmates Cody Sumpter and Clay Solomon are also back after finishing 22nd and 32nd respectively at the League Championships. With so many underclassmen playing such a prominent role, the future looks bright, Hutnik said. Hopefully we can establish ourselves as one of the premier teams of the Patriot League. With a freshmen class of five, Lafayette s roster mostly consists of underclassmen. Of the 15 on the team s roster, 10 are either freshmen or sophomores. Hutnik did not hesitate to throw the Class of 2012 into the mix right away. Michael Curcio and Chip Culp each played in three of the fall tournaments and showed they are capable of handling themselves on the collegiate level. Curcio posted the team s best average score in the fall (74.8), sinking two top-10 finishes along the way. Culp also ranked among the top three performers with an average of 78.2 over five rounds and posted his best finish (third) at the Monmouth University Quad Match. Carter Rufe and Nicholas Zawarski, an Easton native, join Rob Robertson to round out the group. Robertson transferred from Purdue during the offseason and helped the team to a fourth place finish in the season opener at the St. Thomas Aquinas Spring Invitational. Over the past few years, we have been making noticeable improvements in the program, Hutnik said. This year s personnel is excited and anxious about the season. The competition and dedication should show some very positive results. Lafayette competed in seven tournaments and invitationals during the fall season and notched its best finish fifth of 10 at the Rehoboth Beach Invitational in Rehoboth, Del. The Leopards have five tournaments scheduled for the spring, including their home invitational April 3-5, before the season culminates in West Point, N.Y., at the Patriot League Championships Roster Name yr. Economics and Sr. Chemical Engineering Brandon Mitchel Sr. Government and Law Steven Melnic Reed Valutas Jr. Biology So. Economics and In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 97 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 90 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 79 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships including Bucknell s victory over national No. 4 seed Florida State in baseball and Navy s triumph against national No. 4 seed North Carolina in men s lacrosse during the campaign. Patriot League teams previously recorded consecutive first-round wins in men s basketball, a final four appearance in men s lacrosse and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship to highlight the League s NCAA success. The Patriot League s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society Lafayette GOLF Quick Facts Location: Easton, Pa.
